Memorial garden opens after £20k fundraiser
Lee Clarke was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2020 and spent time in the Amethyst Ward at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby before he died at the age of 50 in February 2022.
His family and friends organised a fundraising day before his death and it was Mr Clarke's wish for the money to be put towards transforming the ward's garden.
His friend Emma Wright said they wanted to create a "nice sanctuary" for patients and their families that would be "somewhere to reflect".
Mr Clarke spent a lot of time in the Amethyst Ward's garden – a place Ms Wright described as "dilapidated" and "really overgrown".
"It was unloved and uncared for, it really did make it a miserable place," she added.
A total of £20,000 was raised from a fundraising day in Mr Clarke's memory and events like the London Marathon and National Three Peaks.
The garden's revamp includes a new accessible path, a shelter, children's play equipment and a chalk board.
The Health Tree Foundation also helped with two garden murals - one of Grimsby's Dock Tower and one of Pier 39, one of Mr Clarke's favourite places.
Ms Wright said the garden had a rainbow theme to symbolise optimism and bring "tranquillity and happiness" to the area.
She described Mr Clarke as a "big, larger-than-life character who was very social and always telling a joke".
She added: "I'm hoping people will sit in the garden and enjoy the space, what it brings to them and a few peaceful moments away from what they're going through."

Fundraiser for Edinburgh Hibs fan in 'intensive care' after taking unwell on trip
A fundraiser has been launched for an Edinburgh Hibs fan who took unwell while supporting his team in Denmark. Dougie Sneddon, also known as Uncle Dougie, was in Copenhagen to see his beloved team play against Midtjylland on July 24. However, after taking unwell Dougie was admitted to hospital and is currently in intensive care on a ventilator. The message on the GoFundMe reads: "Hi all my name is Peter Manson. I am starting a fundraiser to help cover the cost of medical care and accommodation for a well known friend to many. "As some of you may know, Uncle Dougie ( Dougie Sneddon ) was over in Denmark to see his beloved team. Dougie become seriously ill and is a Danish Hospital and is in ICU and on a ventilator. "So the family need our donations to cover cost till they find out about insurance. Not like the UK everything must be covered first. Any funds I receive will be transferred to the family ASAP. "I will also take cash donations and keep a check of who donated it and mention them if they request it. Please share." Prince and Princess of Wales 'consider leaving Adelaide Cottage'
The Prince and Princess of Wales are reportedly considering moving from Adelaide Cottage. The royal couple have lived in the grounds of Windsor Castle for the last three years, but they are now considering relocating to somewhere bigger, with Fort Belvedere - which is located in Windsor Great Park - being tipped as one possible destination. A source told the Mail on Sunday newspaper: "They feel they have outgrown Adelaide Cottage and need somewhere more substantial. "This is the perfect new home for them. It has a swimming pool and tennis court, and Charlotte loves playing tennis." The Prince and Princess of Wales - who have Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, ten, and Prince Louis, seven, together - are currently evaluating their options, but no move is imminent. Earlier this year, the Princess announced that she was in remission from cancer. The 43-year-old royal took to social media in January to reflect on her emotional return to the Royal Marsden Hospital in west London, where she received treatment for cancer, and to confirm that she was in remission from the disease. Catherine - who went public with her cancer diagnosis in March 2024 - wrote on X: "I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to The Royal Marsden for looking after me so well during the past year. "My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me as we have navigated everything. "We couldn't have asked for more. The care and advice we have received throughout my time as a patient has been exceptional.
