LAS VEGAS – Kon Knueppel, the fourth pick in this year's draft, scored 21 points, and Charlotte held off a Sacramento rally to beat the Kings 83-78 on Sunday for the Hornets' first NBA Summer League title. Ryan Kalkbrenner added 15 points, and three other players each scored 11 for the Hornets, who ended their Summer League run with a 6-0 record. Isaac Jones had 24 points and 11 rebounds for Sacramento (5-1), and Devin Carter scored 13. Nique Clifford, drafted 24th, finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. He entered the game averaging 16.2 points and 6.2 rebounds. The Kings lost for the first time in three trips to the final. They won titles in 2014 and 2021.
Knueppel continued his hot play after scoring five points in his opener. He averaged 18.3 points over his final four games. The Hornets dominated early, leading by 36-18 in the second quarter. The Kings came back, and Jones twice cut the deficit to a point late–a follow with 1:17 left and a 3-pointer with 20.3 seconds remaining. But the Hornets closed out the game at the free-throw line, three players making 5 of 6.
Hornets center James Banks III was ejected with 3:47 left in the third quarter after picking up a flagrant-two foul for an elbow to Sacramento center Dylan Cardwell's face. Cardwell went down hard and remained on the floor during most of the video review.

Nelson, 2 relievers combine for 11-inning 1-hitter in Diamondbacks' 1-0 victory over Pirates

Ryne Nelson and two relievers combined for a one-hitter, Eugenio Suarez had a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the 11th inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0 on Friday night. Nelson surrendered a triple by Tommy Pham off the Clemente Wall in right field with two outs in the second—the ball glancing off right fielder Corbin Carroll's glove before hitting the wall and bounding away—during his six innings of work. Anthony DeSclafani (1-1) followed with four hitless innings of his own. Kevin Ginkel left the tying run on third in the 11th for his third save. Suarez, who is the subject of active trade speculation with the deadline approaching next week, lofted a fly ball of Braxton Ashcraft (2-1) just deep enough near the line in right in the top of the 11th to score Carroll. The Pirates wore a throwback uniform combination to honor former outfielder Dave Parker, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this weekend. Their performance at the plate didn't exactly bring back visions of The Cobra, as baseball's lowest scoring team saw its three-game winning streak end. Pittsburgh starter Mike Burrows retired the first 10 batters he faced and allowed just three singles over six scoreless innings of work before giving way to the bullpen. Key moment: Lourdes Gurriel Jr. made a diving grab on a sinking liner by Pittsburgh's Bryan Reynolds with Liover Pegeuro on third and one out in the 11th. Key stat: Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte went 0 for 2 with three walks while becoming the third Diamondback to appear in 1000 games with the franchise, joining Paul Goldschmidt and Luis Gonzalez. Up next: Arizona's Merrill Kelly (9-5, 3.32 ERA) will look to stay undefeated against Pittsburgh, opposing Andrew Heaney (4-9, 5.03) on Saturday.

Cardinals blank Padres 3-0; benches clear after Contreras hit by pitch

Masyn Winn drove in two runs, Willson Contreras had two hits and scored twice, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 3-0 on Friday night. Miles Mikolas (6-7) pitched into the sixth inning, allowing seven hits but no runs to pick up just his second win since May 23. Ryan Helsley pitched the ninth for his 21st save. Padres starter Nick Pivetta (10-3) sustained his first loss since May 11. The 32-year-old, who in his first year in San Diego and having a career year, gave up three runs on three hits in 6 1/3 innings. The Padres had 11 hits and stranded nine in their fourth consecutive loss. The Cardinals scored a run in the second without a hit. Contreras was hit by a fastball and barked at Pivetta as he went to first with catcher Elias Díaz walking between them. Both benches and bullpens rushed onto the field, but it quickly fizzled and the teams were given warnings. Nolan Arenado reached on an error by Jake Cronenworth, a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners, and Yohel Pozo hit a grounder to shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who lost his balance and had to throw to first, allowing Contreras to score. Winn's two-run double in the fourth extended the Cardinals' lead to 3-0. Key moment: In the fourth inning with two on and no outs, San Diego's Gavin Sheets hit a fly to deep right. Jackson Merrill tagged and went to third. Bogaerts tried to go to second, but Jordan Walker threw to the cutoff man, and Bogaerts was easily out for a double play. Mikolas then struck out Cronenworth to escape the jam. Key stat: Contreras has been hit by a pitch a National League-leading 15 times this season. Up next: Padres RHP Randy Vásquez (3-4, 3.73 ERA) squares off against Cardinals LHP Matthew Liberatore (6-7, 4.13) on Saturday.

Tovar's homer in 8th inning propels Rockies past Orioles 6-5 for Colorado's 5th win in 7 games

Ezequiel Tovar hit a tiebreaking solo homerun in the top of the eighth inning, and the Colorado Rockies beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-5 on Friday night to improve to 5-2 since the All-Star break. It's a rare run of success for the Rockies, who improved to 27-76 on the season but still need 15 wins to avoid matching the modern record of 121 losses by last year's Chicago White Sox. Colorado rallied from a 4-0 deficit after Jordan Westburg, Tyler O'Neill, Coby Mayo, and Alex Jackson hit solo homeruns for Baltimore in the first two innings. Mickey Moniak hit a solo shot in the third for the Rockies, and Thairo Estrada added a two-run homerun in the fourth. Colorado took the lead in the fifth when Hunter Goodman hit an RBI double and then scored on Jordan Beck's single. Jackson Holliday tied it for the Orioles with an RBI single in the seventh off Rockies reliever Jake Bird (4-1). Tovar answered with a one-out drive off Andrew Kittredge (1-2), and the Rockies held on. Seth Halvorsen worked a perfect ninth for his 10th save in 13 chances. Colorado and Baltimore – both in last place in their respective divisions – traded players to New York before the game. The Rockies sent infielder Ryan McMahon to the Yankees, and the Orioles dealt reliever Gregory Soto to the Mets. Key moment: O'Neill led off the eighth with a double, but Tyler Kinley retired the next three hitters – two via strikeout – to protect the one-run lead. Key stat: Baltimore remains the only team in the major leagues without a walk-off victory in 2025. Up next: Trevor Rogers (3-1, 1.74 ERA) starts for the Orioles on Saturday night against Colorado's Antonio Senzatela (4-13, 6.41).
