Meredith Gaudreau in letter to Johnny: ‘You loved Calgary so much'

National Post12-06-2025
In a heartfelt letter to her late husband Johnny, published by The Players' Tribune just days before Father's Day, Meredith Gaudreau refers to Calgary as 'one of the most important places we ever spent time in' and reminisces about her introduction to the city — and the rink — where he was starring for the Flames.

Johnny was a fan favourite forward for the Flames for eight seasons. At 31, he was still in the prime of his NHL career when he and his younger brother, Matthew, were killed last August when they were struck by a vehicle while riding bicycles along a rural road in their home state of New Jersey.

Meredith gave birth to their third child, a boy named Carter, in April.

'Gosh, do you remember my first trip there? How I had to ask my mom where my passport was?' Meredith wrote for The Players' Tribune in a letter that is titled 'Thank you for being perfect, John.' 'Because I had never been to Canada …. We had to check that it wasn't expired. I landed in Calgary and I didn't know what customs were, or why my cell phone wasn't working, or how I'd ever find your friend to pick me up. I was so worried, and then I remember looking at this billboard and there you were, number 13, in your Flames jersey. The coolest guy in town. I was thinking, What in the world…….. Where am I?

'You were the first star of the night,' she continued. 'I saw hundreds of people in GAUDREAU jerseys. It was all so surreal. After the game you called me and I was lost again. I was in the concourse waiting for you and couldn't figure out how to get down and find you. 'What am I supposed to do, John? Just tell them I'm here to see Johnny Gaudreau?!' We both laughed about it and went for a drink that night. You didn't say a thing about the game. You just wanted to hear about my day, about me. The coolest guy in town. Coolest guy in the world.

'You loved Calgary so much. And I loved that about you. You were so proud to be a Flame. You showed me around town with a big smile on your face. All your favourite spots, your favourite people. I liked hearing all the Alberta accents — it still cracks me up to this day. I think we walked every inch of that city together. Pretty soon I fell in love with it, too.'

Meredith also recounts how her husband grappled with the decision to depart Calgary as an unrestricted free agent in July of 2022.

He ultimately signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets, wanting to be closer to his family — and hers — in the eastern U.S. She was, at the time, 36 weeks pregnant with their first child.

'Your contract was up, and you had to think about your career and your family and your legacy in Calgary,' Meredith wrote. 'And I know how hard it was on you. You weren't eating like usual, you barely slept. I'd feel you leave the bed at night and go to think about it. You loved being a Flame. I know that. And you knew how painful it would be to leave. I kept telling you, 'Whatever you choose, John, I will be happy.' I told you I loved Calgary, too. And how fortunate I felt to even be in this position, how lucky we both were. You knew that.

Sask. MMA fighter 'Big Game' Hunter Lee has sights set on UFC

Social Sharing Saskatoon mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter 'Big Game' Hunter Lee is stalking his prey all the way to Florida. Lee, a former University of Saskatchewan Huskies champion wrestler, is a professional MMA fighter with a 3-0 record since his first bout in 2022. The light heavyweight is aiming for the UFC, the sport's top promotion. His next fight is Friday night in Tampa, Fla., with regional promoter Cage Fury Fighting Championships, which is streaming the card on UFC Fight Pass. If Lee stays undefeated, he believes a chance to fight in the UFC is within reach. "I'm ready right now," Lee said during an interview at the end of his training camp. "I think two more fights, I'm looking at being 5-0 and beating a lot of tough competition. And if I can get a regional promotion belt on UFC Fight Pass, I think that'll show I'm ready to be in the UFC." Lee, 25, is originally from Flin Flon, Man., and now lives in Saskatoon where he fights out of the Modern Martial Arts Center gym. He won two national titles and a Canada West gold medal as a university wrestler. "I rep Saskatoon now," Lee said. "It's home." Friday's contest pits Lee against Chris Choo, an American with a 4-2 record, in the light heavyweight division. Lee won his last fight by technical knockout. Jesse Boldt coaches Lee and expects his fighter to easily win, even predicting another knockout victory. "As far as opponents go, I don't think he has much to offer Hunter," Boldt said before a sparring session with Lee. "We're not usually too surprised when Hunter comes into the ring and does really well, because we feel him in the gym. He kind of beats on all of us.… He's got crazy work ethic. Yeah, we're excited for this match-up." WATCH | 'Big Game' Hunter Lee on the challenges of making it to the UFC: Hunter Lee says reaching the top promotion is challenging when his scheduled opponents in the lower divisions have a habit of dropping out. More opponents have cancelled fights with Lee than fought him. Lee thinks they sign up mistaking his few fights for inexperience, then see his wrestling record and have second thoughts. "I've had like three or four of those where guys sign a fight and go through the whole fight camp [but] then they won't get on the plane to come fight, or they cancel with an injury a week before," Lee said. "I'm like this guy that nobody will fight in Canada."

(Photo credit: Grace Smith/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images) Kelsey Mitchell scored a team-high 25 points and the Indiana Fever outscored the visiting Atlanta Dream by 22 in the second half to earn a 99-82 win Friday night in Indianapolis. Aliyah Boston added 19 points, eight assists and six rebounds for Indiana (10-10) before fouling out, while Sophie Cunningham came off the bench for 16 points and 10 boards. Caitlin Clark contributed 12 points and nine assists. Jordin Canada starred in defeat for Atlanta (12-8), scoring a career-high 30 points and dishing out eight assists. Rhyne Howard added 14 points despite missing most of the second quarter with a knee injury and Brittney Griner chipped in 10 to go along with eight rebounds. The Fever blew it open in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Dream 30-17 and leading by as many as 20 points in the last minute. After hitting only 30.9 percent from the field Wednesday in an 80-61 home loss to Golden State, Indiana canned 11 of 30 3-pointers and finished Friday night at 46.1 percent from the floor. Atlanta was 11 of 29 on 3-pointers and ended the game at 44.8 percent from the field. Forward Brionna Jones, who averages 14 points per game, managed just six in 24 minutes before fouling out. In the fourth and final regular-season meeting of the teams, Atlanta ripped off 10 straight points in 71 seconds early in the first quarter for a 12-4 lead as Canada hit a 3-pointer and set up Howard for a 3-pointer. That was the beginning of an explosion few would have predicted. In a matchup that featured eight All-Stars at one point in their careers, it was Canada, who's not been an All-Star, who went off for 26 first half points. Her sixth 3-pointer enabled the Dream to take a 45-40 edge to the break. Indiana fought back in the third quarter, ringing up 29 points as Mitchell sparked the rally with a three-point play, three flagrant foul shots and a long 2-pointer. That enabled the Fever to take a 70-65 advantage to the final 10 minutes.
