
Ghibli's midlife crisis: as beloved Japanese studio turns 40 will the magic fade?
Although he would refuse to acknowledge it, much of Studio Ghibli's success is down to one man: Hayao Miyazaki, a master animator whose presence towers over the studio's output. Making a feature-length anime the old-fashioned way may require a large and multitalented cast, but Miyazaki is the thread running through Ghibli's creative genius.
Now, as the studio marks its 40th anniversary, it faces an uncertain future, amid renewed speculation that its figurehead auteur really has wielded his pencil for the last time.
Roland Kelts, a visiting professor at the school of culture, media and society at Waseda University, said Ghibli had failed to anticipate a time when Miyazaki, who is 84, would no longer be at the helm, even after the succession question grew more urgent following the death in 2018 of co-founder Isao Takahata.
Instead, the studio shifted its focus to commercial activities. 'The studio failed to produce heirs to Miyazaki and Takahata, and now it's a merchandising monster,' says Kelts, author of Japanamerica: How Japanese Pop Culture Has Invaded the US.
In 2013, Miyazaki announced that he would no longer make feature-length films, citing the difficulty of living up to his own impossibly high standards.
But four years later, Ghibli said its co-founder had had a change of heart and would make 'his final film, considering his age'. The result was The Boy and the Heron, winner of the 2024 Academy Award for best animated film.
While Ghibli performs alchemy on the screen, there is nothing it can do to shapeshift itself clear of the march of mortality: Miyazaki's main colour designer, Yasuda Michiyo, whose work appeared in most of his films, died two years before Takahata, while another co-founder, producer Toshio Suzuki, is 76.
As a result, the studio is finally looking ahead to a future without its leading creative light, notwithstanding persistent rumours that Miyazaki is not quite done yet. 'Miyazaki is 84 and may not have time to make another movie,' says Kelts.
The studio was formally established by Miyazaki, Suzuki and Takahata in 1985 – a year after it released the post-apocalyptic Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. It has since become a cultural phenomenon, winning an Oscar in 2003 for Spirited Away, and a second Oscar in 2024 for The Boy and the Heron.
Told through the prism of the fantastical, and featuring characters and themes that defy the pigeonholing that underpins much of Hollywood's output, Studio Ghibli's films are widely considered masterpieces of their genre, earning two Oscars and the devotion of millions of fans across the world.
Watching a Ghibli movie is like reading literature, says Miyuki Yonemura, a professor at Japan's Senshu University who studies cultural theories on animation. 'That's why some children have watched My Neighbour Totoro 40 times,' she says. 'Audiences discover something new every time.'
In some ways, Ghibli shares certain values with Disney, says Susan Napier, a professor of Japanese studies at Tufts University in the US, believes. 'Both are family oriented, insist on high production standards and have distinctive worldviews.
'But what is striking about Ghibli is how for the last 40 years the studio has reflected and maintained a set of values and aesthetics that are clearly drawn from its founders and not from a corporate playbook,' adds Napier, author of Miyazakiworld: a Life in Art.
Miyazaki has made no secret of his progressive politics, informed by his experience living through conflict and postwar austerity, and has publicly criticised attempts by conservative politicians to revise Japan's war-renouncing constitution. His films address the themes of war and the environment, but stop short of distilling the narrative into a simple battle of good versus evil.
The Boy and the Heron, for example, opens with Mahito Maki, the 12-year-old protagonist, losing his mother in the US's aerial bombardment of Tokyo in March 1945, in which an estimated 100,000 people died.
However, Ghibli's decades of independence ended in 2023 when the studio was acquired by Nippon TV – a move that the studio conceded came amid uncertainty over its future leadership.
Speculation that Miyazaki's eldest son, Goro, was heir apparent has dampened since the latter voiced doubt about his ability to run the studio alone, and amid reports that artistic differences had contributed to 'strained' relations between father and son.
Now it will be up to Nippon TV to develop a pool of directors to gradually replace the old guard, including those with expertise in computer animation, considered anathema to Ghibli's fierce commitment to hand-drawn frames.
Ghibli has at least overcome its squeamishness towards broadening its commercial brief. The Ghibli Museum has been a huge success since it opened in western Tokyo in 2001, while visitors flock to Ghibli Park in central Japan, whose launch in 2022 was seen as an acknowledgment by the studio that it needed to build a brand that went beyond film-making.
Now Ghibli merchandise is ubiquitous, from My Neighbour Totoro T-shirts and cuddly character toys to high-end leather handbags inspired by Spirited Away and Levi's branded Princess Mononoke jackets.
Totoro, Miyazaki's 1988 film set in 1950s rural Japan, was turned into a play by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2022. Last year a stage adaptation of Spirited Away received a four-star review in the Guardian.
While computer-generated animation and AI make the painstaking, aesthetically stunning animation that Ghibli is renowned harder than it was a generation ago, Napier is not convinced the octogenarian auteur is ready to retire.
'I can't imagine someone like Miyazaki, with his intellectual and artistic vivacity, simply being content to sit around, so who knows?'

Their reunion? It's smooth like butter. The K-pop septet BTS will return in spring 2026 with a new album and world tour. Members Jin, RM, V, Jimin, J-Hope, Jung Kook and Suga made the announcement Tuesday during a livestream on Weverse, an online fan platform owned by BTS management company Hybe. It was the first time all seven members have broadcast live together since September 2022. 'We'll be releasing a new BTS album in the spring of next year. Starting in July, all seven of us will begin working closely together on new music,' the band said in a statement. 'Since it will be a group album, it will reflect each member's thoughts and ideas. We're approaching the album with the same mindset we had when we first started.' They also announced a world tour, their first in nearly four years. The news arrives a few weeks after BTS superstars RM, V, Jimin and Jung Kook were discharged from South Korea's military after fulfilling their mandatory service. In South Korea, all able-bodied men aged 18 to 28 are required by law to perform 18-21 months of military service under a conscription system meant to deter aggression from rival North Korea. Six of the group's seven members served in the army, while Suga, the last to return, fulfilled his duty as a social service agent, an alternative to military service. Jin, the oldest BTS member, was discharged in June 2024. J-Hope was discharged in October. South Korea's law gives special exemptions to athletes, classical and traditional musicians, and ballet and other dancers if they have obtained top prizes in certain competitions and are assessed to have enhanced national prestige. K-pop stars and other entertainers aren't subject to such privileges. However, in 2020, BTS postponed their service after South Korea's National Assembly revised its Military Service Act, allowing K-pop stars to delay their enlistment until age 30.

Did I go bananas for Donkey Kong's radical Switch 2 reboot?
Poor old Donkey Kong. Nintendo's big gorilla has had his biggest makeover since he was redesigned by the British developer Rare for 1994's Donkey Kong Country and the internet has gone into meltdown. '[He] just feels like a giant dopey oaf,' wrote one grouchy Reddit user. 'He's so ugly,' posted another on X. Some people have even compared him to the actor Seth Rogen. Ouch. Like most online discourse, the furore is extreme, but not much has actually changed. Yes, DK has had a Disney-like glow up. His eyes are closer together and his snout is shorter, which makes him look less angry and more cartoonish, but he's also more expressive. His goofy personality beamed through during my three-hour appointment with Donkey Kong Bananza, his forthcoming adventure on Nintendo Switch 2. • Read more gaming reviews and guides It's the first fully 3D DK game since Donkey Kong 64 (1999) and there's a lot riding on it for Nintendo. With no new 3D Mario or Zelda game on the horizon, it's thrusting DK into the spotlight for its first release since the already record-breaking Switch 2 came out in June. Can the hyperactive ape maintain the console's momentum? Bananza, developed by the same team at Nintendo that made 2017's Super Mario Odyssey, is shaping up to be another fantastic action platformer. The game starts in a mine on Ingot Isle, where DK and a bunch of other primates are working. They've discovered golden bananas for the first time but a bunch of dastardly crooks have stolen them. After being sucked into a void, DK and a girl called Pauline venture to a strange planet's core where it's rumoured visitors will be granted their greatest wishes. • The 10 best Nintendo Switch games, ranked Almost everything in Bananza's environment can be destroyed by smashing the ground and walls with DK's mitts. Failing that, you can just lob an explosive rock at stuff — it feels wonderfully therapeutic if you've had a bad day. Doing so will give you treasure, gold and bananas, which can be used to upgrade DK's abilities through a simple and effectively designed levelling-up system. As with most Nintendo games, there's an array of puzzles and missions: in my preview I had to unblock several giant taps to increase an area's water supply while slapping a bunch of critters. Each world is diverse too. DK can traverse vertically between different stages and every one has its own quirk (I visited a jungle with a poisonous floor). This is Donkey Kong's time to shine and, so far, he's (quite literally) smashing it. Donkey Kong Bananza will be released on Nintendo Switch 2 on July 17

Donkey Kong Bananza might be this generation's Super Mario Odyssey
We didn't get a shiny new Mario platformer with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, but having spent a few hours punching my way through rocks in Donkey Kong Bananza, I'm now convinced that Nintendo has given us something much better. The plumber is out. The big monkey is in. Bananza is the Switch 2's killer game. Only the second 3D platformer in the series – it's somehow been 26 years since Donkey Kong 64 – Donkey Kong Bananza sees the newly cartoonified ape wreaking merry havoc across a series of mostly destructible levels in search of golden bananas. It's part Minecraft, given your ability to burrow through the terrain at will, and part Super Mario Odyssey, with its puzzle-based objectives, special challenges, beautiful environments and hidden collectables. The game is an impressive technical spectacle. Almost every part of Donkey Kong Bananza can be smashed through, allowing you to carve your own path towards an objective or tunnel your way through mountains without restriction. The holes you leave in your wake remain etched in the environment until you leave the level, too. Performance stays smooth, and the Switch 2 doesn't sneakily undo your hard-earned destruction to free up memory as you go. Pre-order now at Nintendo Levels are densely packed with things to see and do. As you dig and explore, you'll unearth secret caves and hidden treasure, with maps that lead to collectable fossils of varying degrees of rarity. Collecting stuff in Donkey Kong Bananza feels like endlessly scratching a hard-to-reach itch. The game's main currency, gold banandium ore, pings in a deeply satisfying way as you pummel it out of the earth and hoover it up, delivering a constant trickle of sweet, sweet dopamine. Not only is it compulsive to collect, but all that gold can be used to buy new outfits for Donkey Kong and his shoulder-mounted assistant, Pauline. Revealed during the most recent Nintendo Direct, Pauline can sing to trigger voice-activated switches and uncover hidden items around the map. In the basic co-op mode, a second player can use the Joy-Con as a mouse to launch rock chunks as Pauline, a bit like the Cappy controls in Super Mario Odyssey. Music, and specifically vinyl records, is a big theme alongside all the excavation. Records appear as collectable items, often buried deep in the dirt. They can be added to Donkey Kong's ever-expanding music library at home, while at least one challenge has you lugging a car-sized vinyl across the level to pop on a giant deck. Challenge rooms are liberally dotted about the levels we've seen, whisking you away to classic side-scrolling sections that will be familiar to Donkey Kong fans, with barrel launchers and hidden rooms behind destructible walls. Other challenges have you clobbering enemies or destroying structures within a time limit. Then there's Donkey Kong's ability to temporarily transform into one of several different super-powerful animal forms once you've amassed enough bananas. We saw two: the first a mega-sized monkey capable of punching through steel, the other a distractingly buff ostrich that can glide and drop exploding eggs on enemies. It's chaotic, amping up the destruction and leaving parts of the level in tatters. Though you're free to obliterate large swathes of each level, crucially, they retain enough shape and character that Donkey Kong Bananza doesn't descend into simple, aimless destruction. The world is made up of materials of varying toughness – like sand, metal and concrete – that might require you to use explosive chunks of rock to break through. Later areas add impenetrable obstacles like poison lakes and thorny vines that offer a more guided and challenging platforming experience, while still giving you ways to improvise with the destructible environment. Donkey Kong Bananza seems to successfully walk this line between open-ended destruction and laser-focused world design, with the ability to quickly move between previous levels hinting that replayability will be a key part of the experience too. Even during our brief playtest, each level's map ended up littered with the icons of rare pick-ups buried deep in the dirt – and regardless of whether they're meaningful to collect, the simple joy of burrowing your way through the earth to find them is worth the time. The Switch 2 might not have had a Mario platformer at launch, but Donkey Kong Bananza is already shaping up to be this generation's Super Mario Odyssey. Stupidly silly fun, technically impressive and gorgeous to look at, it's destined to be the console's first must-have game. Donkey Kong Bananza launches 17 July, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2.
