Thabo Theletsane appeared before the Hatfield Magistrates court on charges of impersonating a police officer.
A 42-year-old man appeared in the Hatfield Magistrates court on charges of fraud and impersonating the national head of Hawks, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya.
Thabo Theletsane appeared on Monday after he was arrested on Saturday, May 10, 2025, by the National Serious Corruption Investigation of the Hawks in Petrus Steyn in the Free State.
Hawks spokesperson, Brigadier Thandi Mbambo, said in October, Theletsane allegedly contacted a prominent businessman residing in Gauteng via WhatsApp, falsely claiming to be Lieutenant General Lebeya.
"Using a profile picture and personal details resembling those of Lieutenant General Lebeya, the accused deceived the victim. It is alleged that the accused claimed that the mobile phone of the victim had been hacked and, under the pretext of assisting with a security breach, requested the victim's personal information," said Mbambo.
Mbambo added that the victim believed that he was in communication with Lieutenant General Lebeya and provided Theletsane with his personal details and contact information of close associates.
"The accused later solicited money, claiming to have successfully de-bugged the victim's mobile devices. An amount of more than R100,000 was subsequently paid by the victim," said Mbambo.

Who is the fifth suspect added in the Tebogo Thobejane attempted murder?

Tebogo Thobejane was admitted to the Life Fourways Hospital in Johannesburg for shock after her car was shot at multiple times. In a significant development in the ongoing attempted murder case involving South African actress Tebogo Thobejane, the State has introduced a fifth suspect, Nthabiseng Nzama Nzama, 23, appeared briefly before the Alexandra Magistrates' Court on Monday, facing charges related to allegedly facilitating fund transfers between accounts while having knowledge that these funds were derived from criminal activity. Phindi Mjonondwane, spokesperson for the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) in Gauteng, confirmed that Nzama has been granted bail set at R10,000. This recent addition to the case comes amid an investigation into an extensive criminal network, stemming from the arrest of suspects linked to the brutal killing of popular musician Oupa John Sefoka, better known to fans as DJ Sumbody. Police have now confirmed that the suspects arrested for his murder are connected to other killings including the attempted murder of Thobejane, indicating a broader pattern of organised violence.

Former Bafana Bafana star missing for a MONTH

Over a month has passed since former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Thando Mngomeni was last seen, prompting urgent appeals from his family and growing concern from South Africa's football community. Mngomeni, now 42, was last seen in mid-June, and has not made contact with family or friends since. His sudden disappearance has sparked widespread anxiety and a nationwide search effort. His brother, Thabo Mngomeni, a former Orlando Pirates midfielder, and other family members have called on the public to help trace the missing footballer. Their fears were compounded this week following the death of Zanyiwe Martins, a person close to Thando, who the family believes he would have made every effort to see if he could. In a Facebook post, family friend Mark Totoyi wrote: 'Family and friends are deeply concerned as Thando Mngomeni has been missing for almost a month now… We are appealing to anyone who might have seen him or has any information about his whereabouts to please urgently reach out to the family. Your assistance could help us bring Thando home safely.' The post has since been widely shared across social media as the search intensifies, with former team-mates and supporters joining the call for information. Despite a few leads being pursued, there have been no confirmed sightings of Mngomeni, and the silence surrounding his whereabouts is growing increasingly distressing. The Mngomeni family have requested that anyone with information to please come forward, no matter how minor it may seem. He hails from Gugulethu on the Cape Flats and is the younger brother of former Orlando Pirates player and South African international Thabo Mngomeni. Mngomeni spent a season and a half in Sweden with Helsingborgs IF and made 29 appearances before returning to South Africa claiming he could not cope living abroad. He returned to Santos after semi-retirement and impressed with some good performances during the 2007/08 season. He signed for Mamelodi Sundowns (16 matches) and moved to Bidvest Wits (43 matches) after a year and half. He played five matches for Bafana Bafana between 2004 and 2007. Kenny Kunene was present during DJ Sumbody suspect's arrest

Businessman and Patriotic Alliance deputy president Kenny Kunene has confirmed that he was present during the arrest of a suspect linked to the deaths of DJ Sumbody and his bodyguards. The DJ was gunned down in a hail of bullets while driving through Woodmead, Johannesburg, in November 2022. On Tuesday, reports surfaced that Kenny Kunene was at Katiso 'KT' Molefe's home, one of the accused, during his arrest. Speaking to eNCA on Tuesday afternoon, Kunene claimed he was accompanying young journalists to an arranged interview at Molefe's house. He said his contact organised the interview opportunity, and he accompanied the journalists to the location. Kunene denied having any personal relationship with Molefe or having spoken with him before. He insisted his role was strictly professional and limited to helping the journalists with access to an interview. Watch here: Four suspects linked to DJ Sumbody's 2022 murder were arrested in Gauteng on Monday. SAPS revealed that three suspects are believed to be hitmen hired to carry out the fatal ambush. The fourth suspect is allegedly the mastermind who planned and ordered DJ Sumbody's assassination. 'The [police] team arrested four men between the ages of 45 and 60 in connection with the murder of a popular South African DJ, Oupa John Sefoka, popularly known as DJ Sumbody. Gauteng organised crime detectives worked on the case and later roped in the SAPS political killings task team to assist,' said National police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe. The weapon allegedly used was seized and linked to other high-profile murder cases. The four suspects face three murder charges tied to the 2022 ambush that killed DJ Sumbody and his bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza. They appeared briefly in the Alexandra Magistrate's Court today. The case was postponed to 29 July 2025 for further investigation and verification of new forensic evidence.
