‘Can't decide who is the real target': Jairam Ramesh's jibe at BJP over Pahalgam attack response
'The BJP cannot seem to decide who the real target is — the Congress, the terrorists, or Pakistan,' the Congress leader told news agency NI.
'At a time like this, the focus should be clear. The real target must be the terrorists, and Pakistan should be given a strong response. Attacking Congress is pointless and irresponsible,' he added.
Highlighting the opposition's efforts to build consensus in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, Jairam Ramesh said the party had extended full support to the Centre after 26 people were killed in Pahalgam on April 22.
'On April 22, we demanded an all-party meeting. It was held two days later. Even though the Prime Minister did not attend, Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi were present and emphasised the need for national unity,' he said.
He added that on April 24, the Congress reiterated its position by calling for a firm response against Pakistan and proposing a special session of Parliament to discuss national security. 'There has been no response from the government so far,' he claimed.
Drawing a parallel with the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, the Congress leader accused the BJP of politicising that tragedy as well, citing a newspaper advertisement the party issued targeting the Congress.
'This is a time for unity and solidarity. This is a time for demonstrating a collective resolve to teach Pakistan a lesson it will never forget,' Ramesh said in a post on X.
He recalled how, in 2008, the then Gujarat chief minister—now Prime Minister Narendra Modi—visited Mumbai just two days after the attacks and addressed the media.
'What did the BJP do on November 28th, 2008, just two days after the deadly terror attacks began in Mumbai? In a brazenly unprecedented move, the then Gujarat CM went to Mumbai and, in an act of grandstanding, addressed the media,' Ramesh's post read.
'The BJP also issued an awful ad that very day in the newspapers. This is history. Let us now be cohesive at this most sensitive time. The country is waiting,' his post added.

Mr Rohit's remarks also came two days after state NCP chief and party MP Sunil Tatkare submission's that BJP needs to be consulted for the two factions of the NCP to reunite. The Ajit Pawar-led NCP joined hands with the ruling BJP in Maharashtra in July 2023. "There is no discussion on unification even within our core group. Even when such a situation arises and time comes to come together, we will have to talk to the central leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party, because the top leadership of BJP took us with them. Consulting them is natural," Mr Tatkare told reporters. Thousands of farmers have been impacted, especially in the Vidarbha region, due to widespread floods. Earlier this week, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the Mahayuti government is committed to give a loan waiver to farmers. "A loan waiver is a short-term measure. We have set up a committee to suggest long-term solutions to resolve agriculture stress and bring farmers out of debt," he said.

Parl panel report on new Income Tax Bill, 2025 to be tabled in LS on Monday
A report of the parliamentary committee set up to scrutinise the new Income Tax Bill, 2025, which would replace the six-decade old Income Tax Act, is scheduled to be tabled in the Lok Sabha on Monday. The 31-member Select Committee, chaired by BJP leader Baijayant Panda, was appointed by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to scrutinise The new Income Tax Bill, 2025, which was introduced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 13 in the Lok Sabha. The Committee has made 285 suggestions and at its meeting on July 16 adopted the report on new I-T Bill, 2025, which will now be tabled in the House for further action. The simplified Income Tax Bill, which is half the size of the 1961 Income Tax Act, seeks to achieve tax certainty by minimising the scope of litigation and fresh interpretation. The new bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha, has a word count of 260,000, lower than 512,000 in the I-T Act. The number of sections is 536, as against 819 effective sections in the existing law. The number of chapters has also been halved to 23 from 47, according to the FAQs (frequently asked questions) issued by the I-T department. The Income Tax Bill 2025 has 57 tables, compared to 18 in the existing Act and removed 1,200 provisos and 900 explanations. Provisions relating to exemptions and TDS/TCS have been made crispier in the Bill by putting them in a tabular format, while the chapter for not-for-profit organisations has been made comprehensive with use of plain language. As a result of this, the word count has come down by 34,547. In a taxpayer-friendly move, the Bill replaces the term 'previous year' as mentioned in the Income Tax Act, 1961 with 'tax year'. Also, the concept of assessment year has been done away with. Currently, for income earned in the previous year (say 2023-24), tax is paid in assessment year (say 2024-25). This previous year and assessment year (AY) concept has been removed and only tax year under the simplified bill has been brought in. While introducing the Bill in the Lok Sabha, Sitharaman had said that "substantial changes" have been made in the Bill. The number of words have been halved from 5.12 lakh, and sections reduced from 819 to 236. Following introduction, the Bill was referred to the select committee of the Lok Sabha and the committee was mandated to submit its report by the first day of next session. The Monsoon session of Parliament is scheduled to sit from July 21 to August 21, 2025.

Maharashtra minister Manikrao Kokate found playing rummy in Assembly, Opposition calls it ‘insult to democracy'
Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate found himself in the eye of a storm Sunday after a purported video of him playing Junglee Rummy, an online card game, on his phone in the Legislative Assembly was put out on social media by Nationalist Congress Party (SP) leader Rohit Pawar. Sharing the video, Pawar said, 'NCP (led by Ajit Pawar), cannot do anything without consulting the BJP. And therefore, when scores of farm issues are pending and every day eight farmers are ending their lives in Maharashtra, the agriculture minister does not seem to have any work and is spending time playing rummy.' Kokate is an MLA of the NCP faction led by Ajit Pawar from the Sinnar Assembly constituency. Reacting to the video, BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar said, 'There is no law under which action can be taken against minister Kokate. At best, he will be warned… I had told Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to make a law against such activities, but he said the right is with the Central government.' Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Kishori Pednekar said, 'This is not the first time minister Kokate has been caught on the wrong foot. Earlier, too, he was found making irresponsible statements. The way he is behaving is nothing but an insult to democracy.' Pednekar said, 'There was a time when MLAs were held in high esteem but today they are stooping low every day.' NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad said, 'Where is he playing rummy? He is playing right in the state legislature. Kokate is a minister, but he has not replied to even one poser in the House. The minister is found playing Junglee Rummy, which has destroyed several families in Maharashtra. These ministers have no shame and have no respect for the State legislature. Now I want to see how Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar will react. I am curious what he will do.' In the Karnataka Assembly, when some members were found watching their cellphones, they were made to sit at home, said Awhad. Awhad said if the ministers were genuinely concerned about farmers' issues, they would not be behaving as they currently are. 'The state legislature is a temple of democracy, and yet look at how they are acting in this temple,' he said. Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Sanjay Raut said, 'There are four ministers whom Union Home Minister Amit Shah wants out, one of the ministers is Kokate.'
