8 Mental Health Disorders May Stem From The Same Genetic Root, Study Reveals

NDTV12-06-2025
A groundbreaking new study has revealed that eight major psychiatric disorders may share a common genetic foundation. Conducted by a US-based research team, the study identified specific genetic variants that are active during brain development and appear across multiple mental health conditions. These variants remain influential over long periods, affecting various stages of brain growth.
The genetic study, led by Hyejung Won, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Genetics and the UNC Neuroscience Centre, and Patrick Sullivan, MD, FRANZCP, the Yeargen Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Genetics, has successfully delineated the functional consequences of genetic variants into two groups. Their findings, which were published in Cell, suggest that pleiotropic variants may be optimal targets for treatment due to their extended roles in development and sensitivity to change.
"Pleiotropy was traditionally viewed as a challenge because it complicates the classification of psychiatric disorders," said Won."However, if we can understand the genetic basis of pleiotropy, it might allow us to develop treatments targeting these shared genetic factors, which could then help treat multiple psychiatric disorders with a common therapy."
The human genome acts as the body's operating manual, containing the instructions that helped us develop from a single cell into a whole person. However, everyone's genetic foundation is unique. There are specific regions of the genome that are prone to genetic variations.
Specific genetic variants can impact biological processes, like protein overproduction or altered synapse formation, affecting brain development and contributing to psychiatric disorders. Luckily, researchers are armed with tools to track these variants and learn more about the origins of disease.
The discovery opens the door to new treatment strategies that could target several disorders simultaneously, potentially transforming psychiatric care.

Here's Why Disease-Causing Bacteria Sent To International Space Station

SpaceX launched its Crew-11 mission to the International Space Station (ISS) on August 1, carrying four astronauts and an experiment with disease-causing bacteria. The scientists at the Sheba Medical Center in Israel collaborated with US-based space tech company SpaceTango to develop a study that aims to examine how microgravity affects the growth of bacterial species. The groundbreaking experiment includes E. coli, Salmonella bongori, and Salmonella typhimurium to study how microgravity affects bacterial growth and gene expression. Scientists will study how space conditions impact bacterial behaviour, including antibiotic resistance and virulence, to better protect astronauts' health on long-duration missions. "We know that space conditions affect bacterial behaviour, including how they grow, express genes, and acquire traits like antibiotic resistance or virulence," Prof Ohad Gal-Mor, Head of the Infectious Diseases Research Laboratory at Sheba Medical Center, said in a statement. "This experiment will allow us, for the first time, to systematically and molecularly map how the genetic expression profile of several pathogenic bacteria changes in space." The fact that bacteria behave differently in space is well-documented. They often grow faster and display altered characteristics. The bacteria might harm astronauts, especially during long-duration missions, as they are more prone to infections, because of a combination of microgravity, radiation, stress and changes in the human microbiome. Hence, microbiology and immunology become vital components of modern and future space medicine. Professor Gal-Mor said that the fresh insights will help our understanding of infectious disease risks in space travel, and also expand our knowledge of gene regulation and bacterial physiology in general. The statement mentioned that the bacteria will be stabilised, frozen at -80 degrees C and returned to Earth after growth under microgravity. The molecular and transcriptional analysis and direct comparison to bacteria grown simultaneously in an identical lab setup on Earth.

Dhruva Space to deploy two payloads using its home-built satellite platform

Space start-up Dhruva Space is set to launch its first commercial mission, LEAP-1, by deploying payloads for two Australia-based firms using its indigenously developed satellite platform. The Hyderabad-based start-up will launch payloads from Australia's Akula Tech and Esper satellites aboard its P-30 satellite platform on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in Q3 of the current fiscal. AI payload Nexus-01 (Akula Tech) and hyperspectral imager OTR-2 (Esper) will fly on Dhruva's P-30 platform, which was successfully tested on ISRO's POEM-3 mission in January 2024. Affair, dowry case threat: Police uncovers mystery behind Madhya Pradesh's family suicide

Days after four members of a family died by suicide in Madhya Pradesh's Khurai, the police have arrested a woman and her lover for abetment of suicide. The incident occurred in Tehar village, about 12 km away from the Sagar district headquarters.(PTI) Manohar Lodhi (45), his 70-year-old mother, and his two teenage children died after consuming Sulphas tablets on the night of July 25–26. The investigation into the case has revealed that the mass suicides might have been triggered by Manohar's wife's alleged affair. According to NDTV, Manohar Lodhi's wife, Draupadi, was having an affair with his childhood friend, Surendra. The family was aware of the illicit relationship and had asked them to break it off. However, both allegedly refused, stating they could not live without each other. The incident occurred in Tehar village, about 12 km away from the Sagar district headquarters. The situation escalated when Draupadi reportedly threatened to file false dowry harassment cases against the family if they continued to oppose the relationship. Her daughter had also witnessed her mother and Surendra in intimate situations, police said. Tired of the mental and societal pressure, Draupadi's husband, his mother, and two children consumed Sulphas tablets. While Manohar's mother, Phulrani, and son, Ankit, died on the spot, their daughter, Shivani, breathed her last during treatment at a hospital. Manohar Lodhi was referred to the Sagar district hospital but died en route, the police officer said. On the day of the incident, Nandram Singh Lodhi said he heard his brother, Manohar, vomiting downstairs in July. After Nandram alerted his neighbour, he summoned an ambulance. However, by the time the ambulance arrived, Nandram's mother and nephew had died. On duty doctor at Khurai civil hospital, Varsha Kesharwani, stated that four individuals had consumed Sulphas tablets. They were brought to the hospital in the wee hours. Note: Discussing suicides can be triggering for some. However, suicides are preventable.
