Lions eye series victory against Australia – talking points ahead of second Test

A flawless record of seven wins since arriving Down Under has placed the Lions on the brink of an achievement that has only been managed twice before in the professional era. Successful Lions tours are the exception, not the rule, but they are overwhelming favourites to crush Australia for the second time. The persistent rain forecast to fall throughout Saturday could be a leveller, but on the strength of a one-sided first Test, Andy Farrell's men should be comfortable winners. We're ready for you Melbourne! 🔜🦁#Lions2025 — British & Irish Lions (@lionsofficial) July 25, 2025 The Wallabies are not just playing to keep the series alive, but also their credibility as a tour destination for the elite of British and Irish rugby. These are difficult times for Australian rugby and even though their precarious finances have been shored up by the Lions' visit, problems abound on and off the field. It is imperative that they take the series to a decider by rising to the occasion in Melbourne. If they lose again, calls for the Lions to instead turn their attention to the mouth-watering prospect of a tour to France will only grow louder. For all their difficulties, Joe Schmidt's men are not without hope for their shot at levelling the series. They scored more points in the second-half at Suncorp Stadium where, unexpectedly, their bench made the greater impact. Reinforcing their assault on the Lions are the return of powerful forwards Rob Valetini and Will Skelton, whose very presence after missing the first Test because of calf injuries should prevent their pack being bullied again. Valetini's ball carrying at the blindside flanker is a particularly important weapon. A rock in red! 💪🔴#Lions2025 — British & Irish Lions (@lionsofficial) July 24, 2025 One of the most fascinating stories of the tour took another twist when Owen Farrell was named on the bench for the MCG clash. If he comes on, the former England captain will be making his first Test appearance in almost two years. Even after two quietly encouraging performances on tour, including a full 80 minutes on Tuesday when he proved his fitness following a season of injury setbacks, the involvement of Andy Farrell's son as a late call-up divides opinion, but so far his presence has only benefitted the squad. Much of the spotlight this week has fallen on Owen Farrell, allowing the Lions' real star to glide into the second Test relatively unnoticed. In Brisbane, Finn Russell was mesmerising at times during a first half when his passing repeatedly unlocked Australia's defence. Aided by a dominant pack and the generalship of scrum-half Jamison Gibson Park, the 32-year-old is functioning at the peak of his powers and has another opportunity to prove that on current form, he is the game's standout fly-half.

Two top Belfast boxers added to Crocker-Donovan 2 undercard

The eagerly anticipated main event will be staged at Windsor Park on Saturday September 13 as the two Irish boxers fight it out for IBF Welterweight title that was vacated by Jaron Ennis. Middleweight Agyarko – aged 28 - is undefeated in 17 bouts with seven knockouts to his name. Davis, however, will be a stern opponents. The Yorkshireman will be determined to get back to winning ways after defeats to Josh Kelly and Serhii Bohachuk. The Kelly loss at Wembley Stadium in September was Davis' first professional defeat after 13 wins. 35 year-old Tyrone McKenna will also fight on the Crocker-Donovan undercard at Windsor Park, where he will face Dylan Moran. Moran will be keen for revenge on the Belfast man, who defeated him in Waterford last December. McKenna will also be desperate to win following his punishing 10th round stoppage at the hands of Harlem Eubank in Brighton in March. High-profile MMA star-turned-boxer Molly McCann is also expected to appear on the Matchroom ticket, as is British Olympian Patrick Brown and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Aaron Bowen.

Clips show emergency services battling the blaze at the venue in Crumlin, a suburb of the Irish capital. Reacting to the scenes today, McGregor defiantly posted a video on Instagram while holidaying with his family on a boat. Before drinking from a can of Forge beer, he said: "The pub is open for business today folks. "You wouldn't get through it with a rocket launcher. She's spotless. "Up the forge!" He later posted an aerial shot of the pub, captioned: "UNBEATABLE!". It is not clear when the videos - which shows smoke rising from the pub - were taken, but Dublin Fire Brigade confirmed the fire occurred overnight. A spokesperson for the service said: "Dublin Fire Brigade was called at 3.08am to reports of a fire at a premises on the Drimnagh Road. "Firefighters from Dolphins Barn were mobilised to the address and on arrival found a small fire at the front of the building. "Using a high pressure hose reel, one fire engine dealt with the incident and no injuries were reported. "The scene was handed over to Gardai." Garda officers also attended the scene just after 3am and a probe into the blaze has been launched. A spokesman said: "Gardaí attended the scene of an incident of criminal damage at a licenced premises on the Drimnagh Road, Crumlin that occurred at approximately 3.00am on Friday, July 25. "The fire was extinguished by Dublin Fire Brigade. No injuries have been reported. "The scene is currently preserved and a technical examination will be conducted in due course. Investigations are ongoing." Pictures taken today have revealed the extent of the clear up from the fire, with workmen spotted repairing the exterior of the building. The former UFC World Champion's bar was previously targeted in January 2022. Yobs armed with petrol bombs attacked the venue just hours after the fighter had been there. At the time, cops said they were investigating attempted criminal damage. He purchased the Irish pub for roughly £2million in 2019. In a statement released after the "unprovoked" attack, The Black Forge Inn management team confirmed staff and customers had not been harmed. It read: 'After hours last night it appears that criminals made an unprovoked effort to inflict damage to the Black Forge Inn. 'There was no damage done to any patrons, employees or the Forge and Mr. McGregor was not on the premises at the time of the incident. "The gardai have opened an investigation into the event. We are open and busy as always.' A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana said: 'Gardai are investigating an incident of attempted criminal damage at a licenced premises on the Drimnagh Road, Crumlin. 'No damage was done to the premises. Gardai are appealing for witnesses in relation to this incident." The Sun has approached Dublin Fire Brigade and Garda for comment. It comes as the star was embroiled in a cheating scandal earlier this month, after being spotted cosying up to a number of women.
