EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Paris St Germain manager Luis Enrique tried to play down shoving Chelsea forward Joao Pedro in a near brawl between players and coaching staff following Chelsea's dominating 3-0 win in the Club World Cup final on Sunday.
The incident erupted when PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was arguing with Joao Pedro, before Luis Enrique appeared to raise his hands to the Brazilian's face.
Joao Pedro hit the deck and the PSG manager was quietly escorted away in remarkable scenes that saw players from both sides clash.
"At the end of the match, there was a situation that I believe could have been avoided by everyone," Luis Enrique said at a press conference after the match.
"My objective and my intention, as always, is to try to win over the players so that there are no more problems. Internally, there is a lot of tension, a lot of pressure."
The Spanish coach acknowledged the severity of the incident, adding: "And from there, there is a series of shoves from a lot of people, which I think we should all avoid and which should not happen again."
When it came to the match, however, he was left without answers after a brutal thrashing by Chelsea in a clash of European football's most powerful and richest clubs.

It was a surprise lopsided affair as Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer poured in two goals in eight minutes in the first half and assisted striker Joao Pedro in another score before the break.
Fans expected much more from the European Cup and French league champions that had once appeared unstoppable, cruising past Real Madrid 4-0 in the semi-final stage of the expanded, 32-team tournament.

"I believe they actually started the game really, really well with a lot of pressure and we gave them a hard time. And then after that I believe they had opportunities to score but it didn't happen." REUTERS

US ‘moving at haste' to get Ukraine weapons under Trump plan, says envoy

Find out what's new on ST website and app. The site of a Russian drone strike in Dnipro, Ukraine, on July 17. BRUSSELS - The United States is moving to get weapons to Ukraine quickly under President Donald Trump's plan for Europe to buy arms, and is weighing selling Patriot air defence systems from its own stocks, Washington's envoy to Nato said on July 17. 'We are all moving with haste to facilitate this and get this done, and, you know, I think things are actually moving very quickly,' US ambassador to Nato Matthew Whitaker told journalists. 'But I can't verify a date that this will all be completed.' Mr Trump on July 14 announced a deal with Nato chief Mark Rutte for European Nato states to buy US weaponry – particularly advanced Patriot systems – and give it to Kyiv. The move marked a pivot for the US leader as his patience has worn thin with Russia's President Vladimir Putin for frustrating efforts to halt the war in Ukraine. European countries – including Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden – have expressed willingness to buy the weaponry for Kyiv. But questions have been raised over where the systems will come from and how soon they can get to Ukraine as the war-torn country faces unprecedented Russian bombardments. Top stories Swipe. Select. 'We're never going to put the United States at a strategic disadvantage, and we're going to make sure that we have everything we need,' he said. 'At the same time, I think we all acknowledge the desperate requirements that Ukraine currently, immediately needs on the battlefield and to protect their cities.' Other options mooted include European countries sending their systems to Kyiv now, and being able to purchase replacements as a priority from the United States. The deal comes as US allies nervously monitor a US review of its force deployments around the world. Washington has warned it could look to shift forces and weaponry away from Europe to focus more on China. Mr Whitaker said the United States was in 'daily conversations' with allies about the process ahead of possible announcements in coming months. 'We've agreed to no surprises and no gaps in the strategic framework of Europe,' he said. 'I don't think there's a lot of anxiety. I think there's just a lot of desire to know our plan is so that there can be other planning.' AFP

Barcelona agree sponsorship deal with DR Congo to promote tourism

The contract with Barcelona is dated June 29 and stipulates that a logo branding the war-hit Central African country as the "heart of Africa" will appear on the backs of training and warm-up jerseys for the men's and women's teams. The logo will also appear in advertising for the club and in the club magazine and annual report, the contract says. Congo will pay the club between 10 million and 11.5 million euros annually over the next four seasons, it says. Details of the deal between Congo and Barcelona have not been announced. AS Monaco and AC Milan last month also announced sponsorship deals with Congo without disclosing the amounts. Congolese sports minister Didier Budimbu told Reuters the contract with AS Monaco is worth 1.6 million euros per season. He did not disclose the amounts for the contracts with AC Milan and Barcelona. Announcing the AC Milan deal on June 20, Congolese tourism minister Didier M'Pambia said it was part of a government strategy "to reposition the DRC on the international stage as an undisputed leader on the African continent" by promoting tourism and investment opportunities. Congo's tourism ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Thursday, while Barcelona told Reuters they had no comment at this time. In February Congo's foreign minister Therese Kayikwamba Wagner urged football clubs Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Paris St Germain to end their "blood-stained" sponsorship agreements with "Visit Rwanda". The appeal came less than a week after M23 rebels seized eastern Congo's biggest city, Goma as part of a lightning advance. Rwanda denies backing M23, saying it is defending itself. A report by a group of United Nations experts obtained by Reuters this month said Kigali exercised command and control over the rebels during their advance, gaining political influence and access to mineral-rich territory. Ukraine's Zelensky says he and Trump are considering a drone ‘mega-deal'

Find out what's new on ST website and app. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (left) and armed forces chief Oleksandr Syrskyi visiting an exhibition of Ukrainian-made drone-missiles in Kyiv, in December 2024. WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are considering a deal that involves Washington buying battlefield-tested Ukrainian drones in exchange for Kyiv purchasing weapons from the US, Mr Zelensky said, in an interview with the New York Post. Mr Zelensky said his latest talks with Mr Trump focused on a deal that would help each country bolster its aerial technology. Ukrainian drones have been able to strike targets as deep as 1,300km into Russian territory. 'The people of America need this technology, and you need to have it in your arsenal,' Mr Zelensky told The Post in the interview conducted on July 16. The Ukrainian leader said drones were the key tool that has allowed his country to fight off Russia's invasion for more than three years. 'We will be ready to share this experience with America and other European partners,' he said. Ukraine is also in talks with Denmark, Norway and Germany, he said. Top stories Swipe. Select.
