Volodymyr Umanets, a 69-year-old security guard, hopes his son will be among the Ukrainian prisoners of war now being handed over by Russia, but he knows he could be part of a more sombre homecoming: the repatriated remains of dead soldiers.
Not knowing which group his son, Sergiy, will be in is a torment. 'I am told to wait. What else is left for me to do?' said Mr Umanets, as tears welled up in his eyes.

Putin's ‘psycho' torturer Dr Evil who inflicted electric shocks, beatings and sexual humiliation unmasked by Ukrainians

PUTIN'S "psychotic" prison torturer known as Dr Evil has been unmasked by those who survived his reign of terror. Under the cover of a white medical coat and a balaclava, Ilya Sorokin became one of the most feared torturers inside Russia's notorious Penal Colony No. 10 in Mordovia. 6 Ilya Sorokin has been unmasked as Putin's 'psychotic' prison torturer known as Dr Evil Credit: East2West 6 The 34-year-old dad inflicted electric shocks, savage beatings and depraved sexual humiliation on Ukrainian prisoners of war Credit: East2West 6 The sadistic torturer worked at the Russian penal colony No. 10 in Mordovia Credit: East2West The 34-year-old inflicted electric shocks, savage beatings and depraved sexual humiliation on Ukrainian prisoners of war. But thanks to independent journalists, working with with dozens of exchanged Ukrainian POWs, the identity of the so-called doctor has finally been exposed. The heartless dad-of-two was accused of 'pointless sadism' and a grotesque betrayal of medical ethics. One brave survivor said Sorokin's voice was 'manic, screechy… indescribable'. Former inmate Pavlo Afisov recalled: 'His favourite question for all of us was, 'Who are you?' We had to reply, 'F*****s.'' Torture in a white coat The torture wasn't random — it was systematic. Sick prisoners were denied care — one, with a rotting tooth, was refused any treatment. Volodymyr Yukhymenko, a Ukrainian soldier, died from his injuries after enduring pneumonia, multiple fractures and internal bleeding. His cellmate told investigators that Sorokin refused to even examine him. When confronted by journalists, Sorokin — now working as an army medic — tried to feign innocence. 'That can't be true. I don't work there,' he said before abruptly hanging up and blocking the caller. 6 Ukrainian POWs (left to right) Pavlo Afisov, Yulian Pylypey, Oleksandr Kiriienko and Nikita Pikulyk spent months enduring beatings and psychological torment Credit: East2West 6 One survivor said his voice was 'manic, screechy… indescribable' Credit: East2West But damning video evidence, social media trails, and victim testimonies leave little doubt that Sorokin is Dr Evil. The water reportedly came from Simferopol, the capital of Russian-annexed Crimea, and was distributed under the guise of aid. Now, it's feared to have been a Trojan horse of death. Two killed and 27 wounded after Russia drops 500kg bomb on Ukrainian frontline town

A RUSSIAN STRIKE on a central square in Ukraine's frontline town of Dobropillia has killed at least two people and wounded 27, authorities have said. It comes just two days after US President Donald Trump threatened his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin with 'severe' secondary tariffs on Moscow's trading partners if it did not end the war. Russia fired hundreds of drones, artillery and a ballistic missile at Ukraine early today, defying Trump's call to reach a peace deal within 50 days or face severe sanctions. According to regional authorities, Russia dropped a 500-kilogramme bomb on Dobropillia, which is located in the east of the country just 20 kilometres from the frontline. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said rescue operations were underway in Dobropillia after the bomb strike that had targeted 'an ordinary shop and shopping pavilions.' He called the attack 'horrific, senseless terror' and said 'there is no military sense in their strikes.' Rescue operations are underway in Dobropillia, Donetsk Region, after a Russian bomb hit a local store. The number of victims is not yet confirmed. This is horrendous, dumb Russian terror. Simply an attempt to kill as many as possible. Russia is all about vile strikes like this. — Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський (@ZelenskyyUa) July 16, 2025 Vadym Filashkin, head of Ukraine's embattled Donetsk region, said two people were killed and 27 wounded. Advertisement Filashkin published footage of the square, with several fires and low-rise buildings severely damaged and covered in rubble. He said the rush hour attack hit 54 shops and 13 buildings around the crowded square. Officials said rescue workers clearing the rubble could find more victims. Dobropillia is a quiet town not far from the eastern Ukraine frontline that has faced regular attacks throughout Russia's invasion. Russia has stepped up its summer campaign in recent weeks as Washington-mediated ceasefire talks stall. All the injured in Dobropillia have received qualified medical care. Local authorities, police, and emergency services are on-site — the search and rescue operation continues. — Вадим Філашкін / Vadym Filashkin (@filashkin) July 16, 2025 Speaking on Monday, Trump said he was 'disappointed' in Putin, who has kept attacking Ukraine as though the two leaders' phone conversations 'didn't mean anything.' Some two dozen people were wounded across Ukraine in other night-time Russian attacks, officials said. In Russia, officials said one person was killed in a Ukrainian drone attack on the city of Voronezh, some 200 kilometres from Ukraine's border. Reshuffle in Kyiv The attacks came as Zelenskyy unveiled a government reshuffle – replacing his prime minister and defence minister as he aims to breathe new life into his team, with no end of the war in sight.
