Time of India2 days ago
Chikkamagaluru: The district administration has identified 163 landslide-prone areas. These areas were determined based on landslides and damage caused by heavy rains since 2019 and are being closely monitored.
The district administration also identified 75 care centres to relocate families at risk if rains intensified. Preparations were in place to relocate people if signs of increased moisture and soil loosening were observed.
Out of the 163 vulnerable areas, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) separately listed 25 locations where human settlements and roads were at risk. In Gudethota village of Koppa taluk, 17 families lived in danger during the rainy season every year.
The road near Kavikal Gandi on the Bababudangiri road was rebuilt. The work, costing Rs 90 lakh, was completed. Apart from this, landslide prevention work has not started elsewhere. For two landslide prevention projects on Mullayanagiri road, approval was granted for work costing Rs 85 lakh.
The district administration stated that Rs 4.8 crore was sanctioned through the public works department to repair the road near Narve in Koppa taluk.

Officials stated that once all these projects were completed, landslides in the most vulnerable areas could be prevented for now.
In Charmadi Ghat, the GSI identified three risk areas, and the district commissioner wrote to national highway division officials to address these. The district administration informed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to take immediate action where landslides were possible at two locations on National Highway-163 in Sringeri taluk.
Fifty-seven nodal officers were appointed to monitor landslide-prone areas, with one officer assigned to each gram panchayat jurisdiction. A disaster management control room operating 24/7 was established. Authorities supervised a total of 164 bridges and 51 footpaths.
During disaster management, nearly 110 excavators, 74 tractors, and 263 tippers were deputed for emergency operations. Additionally, 108 professional swimmers and 330 volunteers were identified and trained to attend emergencies.

Tiswadi, Ponda water supply hit again as pipe tears

Ponda: A pipeline at Opa Water Works was ruptured by repeated power interruptions, hitting the potable water supply to Tiswadi and Ponda talukas on Saturday. This is the second pipeline rupture in less than a month. On June 26, the same line was ruptured by a 'surge'. A surge means whenever water falls with a tremendous force, the pipeline carrying it bursts near the joints. That occurs when water is being fetched from a river to a treatment plant and the power supply is suddenly cut. The water was released on Saturday afternoon after the ruptured pipeline was welded. However, it will take another day to normalise the supply to households in Panaji and high-lying areas. Sunil Kerkar, an assistant engineer at the Curti water plant, said the rising main pipeline, by which a treatment plant gets raw water from the pumping station, developed a rupture during the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. The rupture was noticed around 1am and the water supply was immediately stopped, Kerkar said. Before the pipeline ruptured, power outages occurred at least three times on Friday. According to Kerkar, a sudden outage of electricity affects the pressure inside a pipeline resulting in a rupture. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Abiti in una casa indipendente? Sunil Shet, another assistant engineer at the Opa Water Works, said the 750mm mild steel rising main pipeline burst at midnight and repairs were taken up in the morning as the pipeline had to be emptied to facilitate electric welding. Once the repair work was completed, all reservoirs were filled and water released in the afternoon. However, some high-lying areas will receive supply only from Sunday afternoon, he said.

Bisalpur Dam sees sharp rise in water level, boost for Jaipur, Tonk and Ajmer

Jaipur: In a major relief for residents of Jaipur, Tonk, and Ajmer, the Bisalpur Dam has recorded a significant rise in water levels due to consistent monsoon inflow from its catchment area. The water level increased from 312.45 metres on June 18 to 313.73 metres by Saturday evening. Manish Bansal, executive engineer of Bisalpur Dam, told TOI, this year's early inflow is unusual, as the dam typically sees a major rise after July 15. "The catchment is receiving good water consistently, and progress so far is very encouraging," he said. Currently holding 561.005 million cubic metres of water, Bisalpur is expected to reach full capacity if the inflow continues. Authorities remain optimistic, with around 60 days of the monsoon still ahead. Other reservoirs across Rajasthan, especially in the Kota region, are also nearing full capacity, with many already above 90%. The overall trend points to a strong water supply season for the region. "Two dams—Rana Pratap Sagar and Jawahar Sagar—are 94.52% and 97.58% filled, and still, a good amount of water is arriving from their catchment areas," said an officer with the water resources department. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Lifetime Office 365 prime software Download Undo Authorities said that all the major dams in the state are likely to get substantial water in this monsoon season. Rain-fed local rivers such as Katli in Jhunjhunu and Bandi River in Pali received plenty of water this year. "We have at least 50 smaller rivers in various villages across the state, which all have got water in them," said an officer. Also, more than 31 dams across the state are now 90% filled, and the whole monsoon season is still left. "Usually, the state gets monsoon rainfall till September 15, and so far, rainfall has been beneficial for the dams," said an officer with the water resources department.
