Turkiye condemns ‘deliberate Israeli strike' on Gaza hospital; Israel army insists it ‘struck terrorists'

Arab News21-03-2025
ISTANBUL/JERUSALEM: Ankara on Friday condemned what it said was a 'deliberate' attack by Israel on a Turkish-built hospital in the Gaza Strip.
'We strongly condemn the destruction by Israel of the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital,' said a foreign ministry statement.
Israel's military acknowledged the attack, but insisted it 'struck terrorists' in what it described as an inactive Gaza hospital used by Hamas militants.
'Earlier today (Friday), the IDF (military) struck terrorists in a Hamas terrorist infrastructure site that previously had served as a hospital in the central Gaza Strip,' a military spokesman told AFP in response to a question about the Turkish accusations.
Nearly 600 Palestinians have been killed since Israel on Tuesday shattered the truce that had facilitated the release of more than two dozen hostages and brought relative calm since late January.
Israeli ground forces on Friday advanced deeper into Gaza and vowed to hold more land until Hamas releases its remaining hostages.
In the southern city of Rafah, officials said Israeli bombardments had forced residents into the open, deepening their suffering. Officials said they halted the building of shelter camps to protect employees.
Israel had already cut off the supply of food, fuel and humanitarian aid to Gaza's roughly 2 million Palestinians. It says military operations will escalate until Hamas releases the 59 hostages it holds — 24 of whom are believed alive — and gives up control of the territory.
Israel had ignored international condemnation of its indescriminate strikes, with Defense Minister Israel Katz warning that Israel would carry out operations in Gaza 'with increasing intensity until the hostages are released by Hamas.'

Israel ‘lying' about famine in Gaza: Geldof

LONDON: Israel is 'lying' about claims there is no famine in Gaza, according to rock musician Bob Geldof. For the latest updates, follow us on Instagram @ The former Boomtown Rats frontman told Sky News that Israel bears responsibility for mass starvation in the enclave, after Israeli government spokesperson David Mencer claimed there was 'no famine caused by Israel' and 'Hamas starves its own people.' In an interview with Sky earlier this week, Mencer said: 'This suffering exists because Hamas made it so. Here are the facts. Aid is flowing through the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. Millions of meals are being delivered directly to civilians.' But Geldof told the 'Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips' show: '(Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu lies, is a liar. The IDF are lying. They're dangling food in front of starving, panicked, exhausted mothers. 'And, while they arrive to accept the tiny amount of food that this sort of set-up pantomime outfit, the Gaza Humanitarian Front (sic), I would call it, as they dangle it, then they're shot wantonly. 'This month, up to now, 1,000 children or 1,000 people have died of starvation. I'm really not interested in what either of these sides are saying.' This week, authorities in Gaza said 127 people have died from malnutrition-related causes since the start of the war in October 2023, 85 of whom were children. Mencer told Sky that aid was entering Gaza and that over 4,400 trucks carrying supplies had entered the enclave. The charity Doctors Without Borders, however, said that around a quarter of children and pregnant women in Gaza are malnourished, accusing Israel of 'deliberate use of starvation as a weapon.' Geldof urged Israelis to protest against the actions of their government and to take aid into Gaza themselves. 'If the newsfeeds and social feeds weren't so censored in Israel, I imagine that the Israeli people would not permit what has been done in their name,' he said. 'Get in your cars, stock your cars full of food and drive through that border and let your own army stop you.' Geldof also said it was right that the UK should recognize a Palestinian state, but criticized the government for not doing enough to stop the conflict. 'This is a distraction thing about 'let's recognize the state' — absolutely, it should have been done ages ago, but it's not going to make any material difference.' An Israeli security official told Sky: 'Despite the false claims that are being spread, the State of Israel does not limit the number of humanitarian aid trucks entering the Gaza Strip. 'Over the past month, we have witnessed a significant decline in the collection of aid from the crossings into the Gaza Strip by international aid organizations. 'The delays in collection by the UN and international organizations harm the situation and the food security of Gaza's residents.' The Israeli military told Sky: 'The IDF allows the American civilian organization (Gaza Humanitarian Foundation) to distribute aid to Gaza residents independently and operates in proximity to the new distribution zones to enable the distribution alongside the continuation of IDF operational activities in the Gaza Strip. 'Following incidents in which harm to civilians who arrived at distribution facilities was reported, thorough examinations were conducted in the Southern Command and instructions were issued to forces in the field following lessons learned. 'The aforementioned incidents are under review by the competent authorities in the IDF.'

Israel intercepts Gaza aid ship, detains 21 activists and seizes humanitarian cargo

TEL AVIV — The Israeli military has intercepted a Gaza-bound aid ship attempting to break the blockade on the Palestinian territory, detaining 21 international activists and journalists and seizing all humanitarian cargo, including baby formula, food, and medicine, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition said on Sunday. According to the coalition, the ship Handala was 'violently intercepted' by Israeli naval forces in international waters approximately 40 nautical miles off Gaza late Saturday night. The group said Israeli forces cut the ship's communications and disabled onboard cameras shortly before midnight. 'All cargo was non-military, civilian, and intended for direct distribution to a population facing deliberate starvation and medical collapse under Israel's illegal blockade,' the coalition said in a statement. Israel's military has not issued an official statement, but the Foreign Ministry confirmed on social media platform X that the Navy had stopped the vessel and was bringing it ashore. This marks the second time in recent months that Israel has intercepted a vessel operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. In June, the ship Madleen, which carried 12 activists including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, was also seized. In May, another coalition vessel, Conscience, sustained a disabling drone attack off the coast of Malta. The latest interception comes amid growing global condemnation of Israel's restrictions on aid to Gaza, where the humanitarian crisis continues to deteriorate. International bodies have warned of rising hunger and the risk of famine, as aid access remains severely restricted. Regional human rights group Adalah said Israel's raid on the Handala violated international law, calling for the immediate release of the detained passengers. The organization noted that the ship never entered Israeli territorial waters and was headed toward Gaza's coast, which it described as the territorial waters of the State of Palestine under international law. 'The vessel's interception in international waters is a clear breach of maritime and humanitarian law,' Adalah said in a statement. The group added that the ship had arrived at Israel's Ashdod port, but lawyers were being denied access to the detainees, who include lawmakers and human rights activists from 10 different countries. Among those detained are seven U.S. citizens, including a human rights lawyer, a Jewish U.S. military veteran, and a Jewish-American activist, according to the coalition. Two Italian citizens were also on board. Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said he had discussed their case with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, who reportedly said they would be deported within three days unless they agreed to leave immediately. — Agencies

Gaza health chief warns humanitarian truce 'means nothing' without urgent action to save lives

GAZA CITY — Gaza's top health official warned on Sunday that the current humanitarian truce will be meaningless unless it is urgently used to save lives, stressing that further delays could result in more preventable deaths. 'The humanitarian truce is not a time for silence,' said Munir Al-Bursh, Director General of Gaza's Health Ministry. 'It must be a moment to rescue those still clinging to life.' In a statement, Bursh painted a grim picture of the situation inside the enclave, where starving children, untreated injuries, and grieving mothers underscore the scale of the humanitarian collapse. He called for immediate medical evacuations for critically wounded patients, including those with severe head and spinal injuries, as well as individuals requiring surgeries and treatments that are currently unavailable in Gaza due to Israel's ongoing blockade. Bursh also urged the swift delivery of life-saving medical and nutritional supplies, including antibiotics, infant formula, protein-rich food, and therapeutic supplements. 'Many patients are dying simply because they cannot access treatment outside Gaza,' he said. 'This truce means nothing if it does not become a real opportunity to save lives. Every delay leads to a new funeral, and every moment of silence costs a child's life.' The statement came as Israel announced localized pauses in fighting on Sunday to facilitate humanitarian aid deliveries through designated corridors—a move that has been met with skepticism by Palestinian officials and international humanitarian groups, who view such measures as attempts to whitewash Israel's role in the deepening crisis. Despite mounting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli military campaign —launched on October 7, 2023— has continued unabated, killing more than 59,700 Palestinians, most of them women and children, according to local health authorities. The offensive has leveled large parts of Gaza, exacerbating food insecurity and collapsing the health system. In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, charging them with war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel is also the subject of a genocide case before the International Court of Justice. — Agencies
