Majithia moves HC against ‘illegal arrest'
1 2 3 Chandigarh: Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia has approached the Punjab and Haryana high court against his "illegal" arrest by the Punjab Police in a corruption case. According to Majithia, the FIR dated June 25 registered against him by the vigilance bureau in Mohali is a result of political witch-hunting and vendetta, initiated by the present political dispensation. It has also been stated that the sole object of the FIR is to malign and harass him for being a vocal critic and political opponent. As per the petition, he was kept in illegal custody on June 25 for few hours before his formal arrest was made. "The remand application filed by the investigating agency lacked any concrete or urgent investigative ground and merely relied on broad, speculative allegations such as his alleged influence, foreign connections, and general statements about the need to confront him with documents or digital devices. These assertions clearly reflect a motive to extract a confession or admission from the petitioner in violation of the constitutional provisions," Majithia claimed in his plea. The petition filed by the senior leader also alleged that the magistrate, while granting remand, failed to record mandatory satisfaction as required under rules, including examining case diaries, recording reasons for police custody, and ascertaining the existence of a specific investigative need. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Neuropatia atacando durante o dia? According to the plea, the SC in its detailed order dated March 4 refused his custodial interrogation despite the same allegations being pressed before it via multiple affidavits filed by the state of Punjab. It has been further claimed that despite his cooperation and findings of the apex court, the state once again resorted to seeking police custody by concealing material facts and misrepresenting urgency before the magistrate. UGC Flags 89 Institutes Including IIT Bombay, Kharagpur For Not Following Anti-Ragging Norms
Last Updated: Defaulters include IIT Bombay, Kharagpur, Palakkad, Hyderabad; IIM Bombay, Rohtak, Tiruchirappalli; AIIMS Raebareli; and NID campuses in Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, and Haryana. Four Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and three Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have been named on a defaulter list for not following anti-ragging rules, according to officials from the University Grants Commission (UGC). The UGC has sent show-cause notices to 89 institutions across India for not submitting the required anti-ragging compliance documents. Among the 17 Institutes of National Importance on the list are well-known IITs, IIMs, AIIMS, and NIDs. The IITs listed as defaulters are IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Palakkad, and IIT Hyderabad. The IIMs on the list include IIM Bombay, IIM Rohtak, and IIM Tiruchirappalli. AIIMS Raebareli and the National Institute of Design (NID) campuses in Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, and Haryana have also been named. 'It has come to the attention of UGC that these institutions have failed to submit the mandatory Anti-Ragging undertakings by students and compliance undertaking by the institutions, despite multiple advisories issued by the UGC, follow-up calls from the Anti-Ragging Helpline, and direct interventions by the Anti Ragging Monitoring Agency," UGC Secretary Manish Joshi, reported PTI. 'Adherence to the UGC Regulation on Ragging, 2009 is mandatory for all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Failure to comply not only violates UGC guidelines but also compromises student safety, particularly in light of increasing concerns about ragging-related distress and campus hostility," he added. The UGC has warned that institutions on the defaulter list may face serious consequences, such as withdrawal of UGC grants and funding, which would affect financial assistance and research work. It has also warned of possible de-recognition or cancellation of affiliation if the institutions don't comply within 30 days. Other well-known names on the list include the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Hyderabad; Aligarh Muslim University; Nalanda University; IGNOU; and the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. As per the Anti-Ragging Regulations, 2009, every student, along with their parents or guardians, must submit an anti-ragging undertaking at the time of admission and again at the start of each academic year.

70% dip in Indians caught trying to enter US illegally in Jan-May 2025
AHMEDABAD: The number of Indians caught crossing illegally into the US in the first five months of 2025 fell a whopping 70% over the same span last year following Donald Trump's return as President and his take-no-prisoners immigration policies. The number fell from 34,535 in Jan-May 2024 - when President Joe Biden was in office - to 10,382 in the same period of 2025. Yet, the fact that 10,382 Indians risked life and limb to sneak in even as the route becomes more perilous indicates the desperation to chase the American dream remains just as fierce. The count included at least 30 unaccompanied minors, many from Gujarat. The numbers have been released by US Customs and Border Protection (USCBP). The sharp drop coincides with the Trump administration's renewed crackdown on illegal immigration, which allegedly disrupted long-standing smuggling networks that cater to hopeful migrants from Gujarat. Anticipating Trump's return, many syndicates paused ops from late 2024 US Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) data shows a dramatic reversal in border encounters, with daily arrests of Indians dropping to around 69 from 230. Many of these syndicates paused their operations from late 2024, anticipating Trump's return. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like She is just 10 years old! "People still want to go, but smugglers have either scaled back or raised costs, and the fear of stricter deportation is real. " The broader impact is also visible in USCBP's overall data, which show the number of illegal immigrants (across all nationalities) apprehended dropped sharply over the same five-month period of 2025. Such arrests fell from 81,492 in Jan to 28,617 in Feb, 29,021 in March, 29,218 in April, and 29,502 in May. Yet for many Indians, especially from Gujarat, the dream of a better life across the border remains irresistible, and often fatal. On May 9, a boat carrying illegal migrants capsized near Del Mar, California, killing 14-year-old Prince and 10-year-old Mahi. Their parents, Brijesh and Sangita Patel, survived the wreck with grievous injuries. The deaths are not isolated. At least nine people from Gujarat are confirmed to have died while trying to cross the US border since Jan 2025. Of the at least 30 unaccompanied minors caught this year, agents said some were probably abandoned by adult companions during the perilous journey. In some cases, smugglers encouraged families to separate in hopes that minors would be treated more leniently under US immigration rules. According to officials, Gujarat continues to be one of the main sources of such illegal migration. "Over the past decade, networks of agents have established overland routes through Central America," an official said.
