Phil Mickelson's '£750m offer' to PGA Tour, 'greedy' accusation, Tiger Woods dinner snub

Daily Mirror21-04-2025
Phil Mickelson has been embroiled in a bitter war of words with the PGA Tour for several years, and his anger has only heightened following the suspension of Wesley Bryan
Phil Mickelson remains at loggerheads with the PGA Tour. His feud with the organisation has continued after Wesley Bryan was suspended for participating in a LIV Golf event.
Earlier this month, LIV debuted The Duels, a new format that paired six professionals from the Saudi-backed tour with social media influencers. Sergio Garcia, Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, Mickelson, and Bryan were all involved.

Despite barely playing in recent times and not holding a card, Bryan has been suspended by the PGA Tour. A furious Mickelson called for the US Department of Justice to intervene as he spoke out against the decision.
He said: "Here's a question. Normally when an entity violates independent contract law, they deny that it happened and forces the contractor/individual to prove that it did.
"In this case the PGA Tour blatantly admits they are illegally banning an independent contractor, so why doesn't they DOJ step in and enforce the law? Why does the individual have to sue to enforcer the law? DOJ do your f****** job!".
The tirade is just the latest in several shots Mickelson has taken at the PGA Tour going back to before he even left for LIV...
'Greedy' accusation
In early 2022, with rumours running wild over his future, 'Leftie' took a shot at the PGA Tour, accusing it of greed amid his long-held complaint over media rights.

He told Golf Digest: "There are many issues, but that is one of the biggest. For me, personally, it's not enough that they are sitting on hundreds of millions of digital moments. They also have access to my shots, access I do not have.
"They also charge companies to use shots I have hit. And when I did 'The Match' - there have been five of them - the tour forced me to pay them $1million [£750,000] each time. For my own media rights. That type of greed is, to me, beyond obnoxious."
Mickelson also claimed that the Tour controls a vast wealth of media assets worth "roughly $20billion" (£15billion) and countless digital moments that he believes should be owned by the players.

The PGA Tour hit back, disputing Mickelson's allegations. An executive told GOLF.com that most players are content with the Tour's financial operations, saying: "I've never seen anybody be really interested in how we generate the money.
"There's some conversation about it now because, you know, Phil's making stuff up that's just not true. But in general, they're happy that there's a lot of money that comes from it."

According to the Tour, it shares more than half of its annual revenue, which is around $1.5bn (£1.13m), with the players, aligning with the practices of other professional sports leagues.
Monahan criticism
Mickelson hasn't minced his words when it comes PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan. In November, amid rumours Monahan might ousted if a deal between the Tour and Saudi's PIF became reality, he said: "Golf is in this situation entirely because of [Monahan]".
He also said that the Tour chief was "losing trust with his players" and that "there's no unity or path forward with [Monahan] involved in my opinion as well."

'$1billion peace offer'
In a bombshell claim, Mickelson claimed that he'd proposed a whopping $1 billion (£750m) compromise to the Tour by way of "eight elevated events". Mickelson revealed: "Before I left I brought a $1 billion commitment from a current PGA Tour partner to have 8 elevated events and give equity and ownership in these events to the players. JM's quote was: 'I don't believe the league is going to happen so we won't be doing that'. No vote, no discussion."
Apology demand
A year into LIV's life, Mickelson demanded an apology from the PGA Tour. That was after it was suggested in a leaked memo that he and others who spoke out against the PGA Tour would be treated harsher than other defectors - if they decided to return.

Mickelson declared: "What a colossal waste of time. Not a single player on LIV wants to play PGA Tour.
"It would require a public apology and restitution to LIV players for paying millions to Clout media to disparage all of us. A better topic is future sanctions for the many players who now come to LIV."
Tiger Woods dinner snub
In Alan Shipnuck's 'LIV and Let Die' book, it was alleged that Tiger Woods had Mickelson blocked from a past champions' dinner at the 150th Open Championship in 2022. An unnamed source claimed: "He [Woods] talked to a handful of other [past champions] to get their blessing and then went to the RandA and told them, basically, no one wanted Phil there and it would make the night weird and awkward. Whose side were they going to take, Tiger's or Phil's? That's an easy choice."

Still talking up LIV
Mickelson remains an unwavering champion of LIV Golf and insists it is superior to the PGA Tour for numerous reasons. Earlier this year, he told The Joe Pomp Show: "You go to a LIV event, you feel different. Here's why: You have music going when you're out on the course. We don't hear little people saying stuff.
"So you're not as anxious about having your kids be quiet. There's a fan zone like on the course where you can sit down, take a break, grab some drinks. It's like a little hang. You can take a nap.
"They have a kid zone by the clubhouse where, again, you can take a nap, play putt-putt, play games for them and entertain them with a big screen so you can still see what's going on with the golf.
"So when you go there, you feel calm. You feel comfortable. It's like, 'OK, our kids had a great time. I was relaxed. I wasn't worried'. I think that's the number one reason why LIV is going to be successful."

George Ford proud of his side as England complete tour clean sweep

Captain George Ford said he was proud of his young England colleagues after they completed a clean sweep of victories on their summer tour. A much-changed England side shrugged off two lengthy delays caused by lightning to beat the United States 40-5 in Washington DC on the back of a 2-0 series win in Argentina. Curtis Langdon, Luke Northmore, Cadan Murley, Jack van Poortvliet, Harry Randall and Gabriel Oghre, one of six debutants, grabbed England's six tries with Ford landing four conversions with one from another new face, Charlie Atkinson. 'The boys have been unbelievable all tour. They deserve that tonight,' said Ford, who won his 102nd cap. 'It is a proud moment for the families, so we will celebrate. 'There has been a lot of hard work and the conditions were difficult tonight. 'We have won all three games, we have had six new caps, I am proud of the effort of everyone.' After kick-off at Audi Field was delayed due to an electrical storm in the American capital, England seized control when the Eagles were reduced to 14 by a deliberate knock-on from outside-half Chris Hilsenbeck. Langdon was the beneficiary of a driving line-out for the first score and then new boy Max Ojomoh slipped in fellow centre Northmore for a simple score under the posts. Alex Dombrandt and debutant Jack Carpenter had scores ruled out on either side of a 40-minute delay for lightning before Murley raced over in the final play of the first half. Van Poortvliet, showing his sound positional sense, went over straight after the restart and England were camped in the Americans' 22 for most of the second period. The hosts held out until Immanuel Feyi-Waboso sliced through to send the supporting Randall over and Bristol hooker Oghre burst out of a maul to score as England turned to the bench. The US were finally on the scoreboard in the final seconds as a well-worked ploy at the front of a line-out saw Chris Poidevin put Shilo Klein over for a consolation score. 'It is a big challenge, but the boys stayed on it,' said home captain Benjamin Bonasso. 'We trusted the process and got a try at the end of the game. 'We have got to keep going. Facing this type of speed and conditions always makes you better.'

Tadej Pogacar stretches advantage as Thymen Arensman lifts Ineos Grenadiers

Arensman went solo from a breakaway still with 36 kilometres to go on this punishing queen stage from Pau to a summit finish at Superbagneres and held off the main favourites to win by 68 seconds, a first Tour stage win for his team in two years. Behind, Pogacar marked moves from main rival Jonas Vingegaard before narrowly beating him to second, adding another six seconds to an overall lead that now stands at four minutes 13 seconds, but the main news in the general classification was Evenepoel abandoning from third place. That saw 22-year-old Scot Oscar Onley rise to fourth, although he was distanced at the top of the final climb by Florian Lipowitz, who inherited third place and the best young rider's white jersey. The final episode of the Tour's Pyrenean trilogy followed the path of the famous stage won by Greg LeMond in 1986, with the Tourmalet, Col d'Aspin and the Peyresourde coming before a first visit to Superbagneres since Robert Millar, now Pippa York, won here in 1989. It took until the Tourmalet for a break to get clear as Lenny Martinez went in search of the king of the mountains points he needed to make the polka dot jersey he wearing on behalf of Pogacar his own, with Arensman among those trying to chase down the young Frenchman. Evenepoel, who suffered in the heat on the previous two days, fared no better on a damper, cooler day, and climbed off early on the Tourmalet, with his team saying the Belgian 'did not feel himself'. Arensman was among three riders to catch Martinez before the Peyresourde, where he launched his own move and opened up a gap on the main group of favourites who until that point has been closing in. The Dutchman's gap grew to three and a half minutes before the the final climb and he fought hard on punishing gradients to keep the chasing pack at bay. 'I can't really believe it,' said the 25-year-old. 'I had to be really patient the first week and I had to wait until the mountains and then the first opportunity I got to I was already second (on the Puy-de-Sancy). 'That was already an amazing experience in my first Tour, but this is unbelievable now.' TV footage showed that an Ineos team car hit and knocked down a spectator amid the crowds on the Peyresourde. The PA news agency understands the Ineos car stopped to check on the spectator who was said to be okay. A team spokesperson said: 'Our thoughts and sincere apologies go out to the fan who was accidentally and regretfully hit by one of our race cars while supporting the riders during today's stage. 'Like all teams we take great care to maintain a safe race environment for everyone – including the passionate fans who make our sport so special.' Pogacar had been backed by many to chase a third consecutive stage win, but he was happy just to mark Vingegaard. 'I didn't have the firepower in me to counter-attack and give it all to the finish, so I committed just to control the stage until the last 200 metres and then do the sprint for second place,' he said. 'It's all good, I'm happy to be in yellow.'

Eddie Howe confident Alexander Isak will stay at Newcastle as he misses friendly

Isak went home as the rest of the squad returned from an Austrian training camp on Friday but he was never earmarked to play in Glasgow. The 25-year-old, who pulled out of Sweden's friendly double header last month because of a groin injury, has been linked with a potential move to Liverpool this summer and, more recently, with Saudi club Al-Hilal. Howe is desperate to keep the forward, who netted 27 goals last season. Asked to explain the absence of Isak and Joelinton after the 4-0 defeat, Howe said: 'Both players are fit but we just felt they weren't ready to play. 'Joe's coming back from a long injury, so we need to make sure when he's introduced he's ready. 'Alex has trained this week and is fine but we didn't want to take the risk with him. Alex was with us all the way through Austria but, with all the speculation and things that are going on, I decided to send him home. 'It's purely the last thing Alex wants, if he's not playing, to be sat in the stand. Being under that scrutiny, I don't think that's fair to the player.' A massive thank you to the 10,000 Geordies who travelled to Celtic Park this afternoon for your incredible support 👏 Safe journey home. Next stop: Singapore! 🇸🇬 — Newcastle United (@NUFC) July 19, 2025 Howe declared there had been no formal approach for Isak this summer but added: 'It's difficult for me to give 100 per cent clarity on any player. I'd never sit here and do that because it's football and you never know what could happen. 'All I can say is that Alex is happy at Newcastle. He loves the players that he plays with, the staff, the team. 'I've never had any issue with him other than really enjoying seeing his talent and seeing him express himself. Certainly I'm confident that he's going to be here at the start of the season. 'Your top players are so hard to find, they're so hard to recruit, they're so hard to develop and make them into those players. So when you have them, you need to treasure them. 'We certainly and the staff, recognise his talent and his ability. We're of course desperate to keep him part of our team. 'Alex has been really good and he's trained really well so far this season. So I know there'll be lots of noise around it and I can't really control that but from inside, he's been really good.' Good run out in Stockholm @LUFC 🔋 — Sean Longstaff (@seanlongstaff97) July 19, 2025 Howe has had his frustrations in the transfer market this summer. Forward Callum Wilson rejected a new contract and the Newcastle manager reluctantly allowed Sean Longstaff to join Leeds on Friday with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules a major factor. 'Sean was someone I never wanted to lose from the squad,' Howe said. 'But as we know and I've said many times, finances, PSR etc, long-term planning meant that sometimes these decisions have to be taken. 'So he's a big miss from our squad. Sean was very, very popular in the dressing room, very popular on the pitch. He did a great job. He tactically understood everything that we needed him to do. 'He's been an incredible servant to Newcastle. But we have to move on now without him.' On the defeat by Celtic, Howe said: 'I think we looked a little bit jaded. Celtic, I thought were way ahead of us fitness-wise and sharpness-wise. But I think we'll be better for the game.'
