Marcus Rashford returns to Man Utd after Aston Villa decline option to buy
The 27-year-old scored four goals in 17 appearances during his time at Villa Park but the club have decided not to activate the £40million option to buy him, meaning he will now go back to Old Trafford.
Rashford will depart the club alongside Marco Asensio and Axel Disasi, who also joined Unai Emery's side on loan in February and helped them to the quarter-finals of the Champions League as well as an FA Cup semi-final while qualifying for the Europa League next season.
Rashford fell out of favour in Manchester under Ruben Amorim but it remains to be seen where his future lies, with the forward reportedly keen on a move to Barcelona.
Asensio scored vital goals both domestically and in Europe, including three in the two legs of the Champions League win over Club Brugge, but Villa also confirmed he will go back to Paris St Germain. Disasi made 10 appearances after his temporary move from Chelsea.
Goalkeeper Robin Olsen and Kortney Hause will also leave the club following the expiry of their respective contracts.
Aston Villa would like to thank Robin Olsen and Kortney Hause following the expiration of their contracts, as well as our loan players as they return to their respective parent clubs.
— Aston Villa (@AVFCOfficial) June 30, 2025
A statement on Villa's website read: 'Aston Villa would like to thank Robin Olsen and Kortney Hause following the expiration of their contracts, as well as our loan players as they return to their respective parent clubs.
'Marco Asensio, Marcus Rashford and Axel Disasi each joined Villa in February on loan deals until the end of the 2024-25 season.
'Everyone at Aston Villa would like to thank each of the players for their efforts and amazing commitment to the club and wish them all the very best for the future.'

Tuesday's briefing: Brentford retain Mbeumo hope as Real Madrid prepare for Juve
The Prince of Wales issued a personal good luck message to England ahead of Euro 2025, while UEFA has postponed a decision on whether or not to admit Crystal Palace into next season's Europa League. Brentford director of football Phil Giles 'wouldn't be massively surprised' if Bryan Mbeumo is still at the club next season. The Cameroon winger, 25, has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, who submitted an improved bid in the region of £60million around a week ago. Giles, speaking on Monday afternoon at the unveiling of new head coach Keith Andrews, said the London club would be 'open' to a deal which was 'right for us financially', but insisted Mbeumo staying put was 'not off the table'. 'In terms of expectations, I don't actually know where that will end up,' Giles said. 'If he's here next season I wouldn't be massively surprised, it would be welcomed, we would be delighted.' 🔴 Jonny Evans has been appointed as our Head of Loans and Pathways, confirming the end of his illustrious playing career 🤝 — Manchester United (@ManUtd) June 30, 2025 Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has been handed the task of helping to progress the careers of the club's young players after confirming his retirement as a player. The 37-year-old, who won the Champions League, three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups during his two stints at Old Trafford, has been appointed head of loans and pathways. Evans' role will see him work closely with director of football Jason Wilcox and the director of academy to ease developing talent into the first team. He told the club's official website: 'I want to officially announce my retirement from my playing career, not with sadness, but with pride, gratitude and excitement for the next chapter ahead.' The Prince of Wales has pitched in with the Lionesses' preparations for Euro 2025, helping to print names and numbers on shirts the team will wear in Switzerland, and wishing the squad 'the best of luck' for the tournament. William, who is patron of the Football Association, chatted with England head coach Sarina Wiegman and presented match jerseys to all 23 squad members at the St George's Park. In a brief personal address to the players, who begin their title defence with a group game against France in Zurich on Saturday, the prince said: 'I just want to say the best of luck to all of you. 'I have seen a few of you and said that to your faces. I know there is a good mixture of those who have been and done a few tournaments before and those whose first tournament it is.' UEFA has postponed a decision on whether or not to admit Crystal Palace into next season's Europa League. Palace thought they had secured a place in Europe's second-tier club competition thanks to their FA Cup final win over Manchester City in May but uncertainty arose as to whether they would be allowed to enter due to UEFA's multi-club ownership rules. Outgoing Palace shareholder John Textor has an interest in French club Lyon, who qualified for the same competition. UEFA announced on Monday it needed more time to make a ruling and said Lyon had reached a settlement which would exclude them from European competition next season if a decision to relegate them to the French second tier was upheld. 🏃 @KMbappe🏃 @BellinghamJude — Real Madrid C.F. 🇬🇧🇺🇸 (@realmadriden) June 30, 2025 Real Madrid face Juventus in a heavyweight Club World Cup battle in Miami, with the winners taking on either Borussia Dortmund or Monterrey, who meet in Atlanta. Man Utd could profit from Arsenal decision as Ollie Watkins transfer talks held
Manchester United have been linked with a move for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, who Arsenal made a £50million offer for during the January transfer window Arsenal's failure to sign Ollie Watkins could come back to haunt them after Manchester United made contact with Aston Villa to discuss a move. Watkins, 29, has been added to the Red Devils' shortlist as manager Ruben Amorim looks to bring in new striker. United's list of options already includes Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres and Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike, both of whom have interest from elsewhere. The Red Devils are focussing on their attack in the summer transfer window, having spent £62.5million to sign Matheus Cunha last month and bidding up to £63m for Bryan Mbeumo. To fund their business, Amorim would be willing to part ways with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Jadon Sancho. United's talks to sign Watkins began through Rashford, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Villa. The Athletic report that ahead of Rashford's move to Villa Park, talks took place regarding a potential swap deal involving Watkins. Now contact has been made to explore the conditions of a separate deal after Villa - who remain at risk of breaching Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules - confirmed that Rashford's loan wouldn't be made permanent. Had Arsenal been successful in their pursuit, though, Watkins wouldn't be on the market. The Gunners made a bid for the England international, who Villa were willing to let go while fellow striker Jhon Duran was still at the club. But Arsenal's £50m offer was rejected and Duran was the one to be sold, joining Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr. Speaking in April, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher revealed the reason why Watkins didn't sign for Arsenal. "When we talk about Arsenal going for Ollie Watkins, someone told me that Aston Villa offered him to Arsenal," Carragher said on The Overlap podcast. "I know that. I don't think it was Arsenal phoning Villa saying they want to sign him. "Arsenal didn't sign him because they didn't offer a lot of money. They offered around £50m. However, this is the information I had. If I know that then I'm sure his agent knows that. Should Manchester United attempt to sign Ollie Watkins? Have your say in the comments section. "Villa have spent a lot of money, and they need to get something back. In an ideal world, you probably would sell Ollie Watkins and keep Jhon Duran because he is the younger player - he is only 21." Arsenal are no longer focussed on Watkins, with Gyokeres and RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko emerging as their top striker targets. United could therefore have a free run at the 29-year-old, who Villa could demand less for amid their concerning financial predicament.
