‘Glee' Star Chris Colfer's Book Series ‘Land of Stories' in Works as Warner Bros. Movie
The studio has acquired Colfer's book series The Land of Stories and has attached filmmaker Phil Johnston to write the script.

Emma Watts brought the property to Warner Bros. Colfer and Watts serve as producers, while Rob Weisbach will executive produce.
The Land of Stories centers on twins Alex and Conner Bailey, who are grieving the loss of their father when they are transported into a magic book where classic fairy tales are brought to life. The series kicked off with The Wishing Spell, published in 2012. With seven books in the original series, Colfer has also published several prequel titles.
In 2017, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Colfer was set to write and direct a feature version of the book series for 20th Century Fox and Shawn Levy's 21 Laps.
The author of 20 books, Colfer is known for playing Kurt Hummel on the Fox series Glee. He starred in the 2012 coming-of-age film Struck by Lightning, which he also wrote and produced.
Johnston is the director of such movies as the forthcoming Netflix feature adaptation The Twits and the Disney animated sequel Ralph Breaks the Internet. His writing credits include Cedar Rapids, Wreck-It Ralph and Zootopia.
Colfer is represented by Weisbach at Rob Weisbach Creative Management, along with Derek Kroeger at Myman Greenspan. Johnston is repped by Entertainment 360, CAA and Frankfurt Kurnit.

HBO Max Lost Two More Cartoon Network Classics This Week
The current regime at Warner Bros. Discovery—soon to separate into Warner Bros. and Discovery in the near future—has never really liked its animated history. After licensing out old Cartoon Network hits and their sequel shows to different platforms, the company still have a few more shows to kick out of HBO Max. In this case, it's Courage the Cowardly Dog and What's New, Scooby-Doo that are now no longer on the service. Per Deadline, the two youth-aimed horror shows left the service on July 31 after their recent license deals expired. According to the outlet's sources, the recent renaming means classic kids' shows are 'lower priority' when it's time to renew licenses. The good news is, the two shows' individual episodes and full seasons remain purchasable on iTunes, Prime Video, and the like. Odds are by the end of 2025, they'll end up somewhere like Hulu's library, and by extension Disney+. But as many online have noted, the removal of Courage and Scooby means HBO Max has effectively zero Cartoon Network shows that came out prior to 2010. (The only real outlier appears to be Samurai Jack, thanks to its last season airing on Adult Swim.) And its selection of post-2010s shows it has is similarly incomplete. What's there is grandfathered in through some other way, like having an HBO Max offshoot (think Young Justice or Fionna & Cake) or being part of the DC family, like Batman: Brave & the Bold. So no Regular Show or Gumball, you'll have to get those somewhere else. Newer kids shows like Iyanu will wind up on HBO Max after they air on Cartoon Network. But how long will it be before they, too, are cast out of the service and left in some form of limbo? Want more io9 news? It's a clever satire of true crime culture with plenty for horror fans to enjoy. 'Witchboard' (Releasing theatrically on Aug. 15 via The Avenue and Atlas Distribution) — A sly remake of the '80s classic, 'The Mask' director Chuck Russell helms this wild tale of a Ouija board gone terribly wrong. Fun kills and a game cast keep things rolling along until a bonkers third act that strives for maximum carnage. 'Hell House LLC: Lineage' (Releasing theatrically on Aug. 20 via Terror Films and Iconic Events) — The fifth and final film in the Abbadon Hotel saga nixes found footage in favor of a traditional feature, but promises even more haunted clown shenanigans and a story that ties the series' threads together. 'The Toxic Avenger' (Releasing theatrically on Aug. 28 via Cineverse) — 'Green Room' director Macon Blair reboots this Troma classic, which is still violent and disgusting, but with a surprisingly soulful lead performance from Peter Dinklage as Toxie. Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Kevin Bacon and Elijah Wood all come to play in this successful take on the character, which — despite a slightly larger budget — is as funny and subversive as the original. 'Jimmy and Stiggs' (Releasing theatrically on Aug. 15 via The Horror Section) — The first film picked up by Eli Roth's new venture, The Horror Section, Joe Begos wrote and directed this sci-fi freakout that is splattered with practical effects. Dark humor and a colorful visual style elevate this story of a man pushed to the brink as he prepares to wage war against aliens. 'Alive in the Catacombs' (Now available to rent at ) — This performance video from rockers Queens of the Stone Age is both beautiful and creepy, as the band performs acoustically arranged songs from their catalogue for the scores of dead surrounding them in the Catacombs. Also recommended: the mini companion documentary 'Alive in Paris and Before,' which delves into the making of the project. Killer Series'Alien: Earth' (Premiering Aug. 12 on FX) — 'Fargo' and 'Legion' mastermind Noah Hawley is the brains behind this big-budget prequel series, in which a spaceship filled with extraterrestrial evil crashes into Earth. It's a gorgeous, scary series that ranks among the best work in the franchise. Bloodcurdling Books'How to Survive Camping: The Man With No Shadow' by Bonnie Quinn (Will be released Aug. 5 via S&S/Saga Press) — Quinn is an active writer on the r/nosleep subreddit, and a portion of her work has been adapted into this fun and creative novel. A full narrative disguised as a how-to guide, 'Shadow' follows a woman in charge of a campsite filled with creepy creatures and the dead campers who didn't follow the rules. It's like having a spooky stay at summer camp, even as the season comes to an end. 'The Unseen' by Ania Ahlborn (Will be released Aug. 19 via Gallery) — Ahlborn's creative riff on the haunted child genre takes plenty of unexpected twists and turns. This is the perfect page-turner that is brimming with darkness, and would make a wonderful transition from summertime fluff to a crisp fall read. 'The Possession of Alba Díaz' by Isabel Cañas (Will be released Aug. 19 via Berkley) — Cañas' exorcism story is a gorgeously written tale of a woman in 1765 who goes with her fiancé to his family's mine to avoid a plague. Unfortunately, something even more insidious seems to take control of her. As the story builds, the best material examines the struggle between traditional sorcery and the power of the church. 'The End of the World As We Know It: New Tales of Stephen King's 'The Stand'' edited by Christopher Golden and Brian Keene (Will be released Aug. 19 via Gallery) — A must-have for Stephen King fans, scores of great writers contribute stories set in the world of the author's apocalyptic masterpiece, including S. A. Cosby, C. Robert Cargill, Paul Tremblay and many more. With a King-penned introduction and a hearty 800-page count, Constant Readers will have a ball debating their favorite pieces. Frightening FestivalsFrightFest London (Aug. 21 – 25, buy tickets here) — The indie horror event is screening many of the year's buzziest festival fare, including the UK premieres of 'The Home,' 'Jimmy & Stiggs,' 'Mother of Flies' and 'Influencers.'
