Election Commission is simply doing its job in Bihar. Why is the Opposition scared of electoral roll revision?

Once again, the Indi Alliance led by the Congress party has been exposed before the country for targeting the Election Commission of India (ECI), which is performing its constitutional duty. The Indi Alliance parties are attacking the Commission over its Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of the electoral rolls in Bihar. The people of India have seen the Congress-led alliance frequently change its stand, spread misinformation, and deliberately create confusion whenever it suits their political agenda. Their actions surrounding this revision process only reinforce that pattern.
The same alliance that once vehemently opposed Aadhaar linkage with voter ID by raising the issue of privacy and constitutional rights is now doing an about-turn by demanding Aadhaar as a valid verification document. Their legal representatives in court even pushed for Aadhaar inclusion, conveniently forgetting their earlier opposition. This contradictory behaviour exposes the alliance's lack of principles and confirms that their real concern is not about rights but about political survival. The Supreme Court did not grant any relief to the Opposition and upheld the constitutional responsibility of the Election Commission to conduct the revision.
The obvious question arises: What exactly is the Indi Alliance trying to protect? Are they worried about fake voters being removed? Are they concerned about illegal entries getting exposed? Is this why they are so aggressively attacking a constitutionally empowered body which is acting strictly under the law, including provisions of the Representation of the People Act of the year 1950?
On June 24, the Election Commission of India issued clear instructions for carrying out an SIR of the electoral roll in Bihar. This decision was taken to ensure inclusion of all eligible citizens and the removal of ineligible names such as those of the deceased, those who have migrated, and illegal foreign voters. The process is designed to be fully transparent and grounded in constitutional legality.
This exercise is not just necessary but overdue. The last such revision in Bihar took place in 2003. In the two decades since, the state has undergone significant demographic transformation due to rapid urbanisation, large-scale migration, and a rising youth population. These changes make it imperative that the electoral rolls be revised to reflect the true and current voter base of the state.
The Election Commission of India is conducting this exercise under the mandate of Article 326 of the Constitution of India, which guarantees free and fair elections. Sections 16 and 23 of the Representation of the People Act of 1950 empower the Commission to revise and verify electoral rolls. Section 24 of the same Act provides for appeals if any elector or political party wishes to raise objections.
To ensure transparency and data protection, the Commission has mandated the uploading of necessary documents on the ECINET platform. These documents are accessible only to authorised officials, ensuring privacy is maintained while verification is carried out in a systematic and reliable manner.
The revision process has been designed to be inclusive, transparent, and people-centric. On the ground, more than 72,000 Booth Level Officers (BLOs), supported by over 20,000 newly appointed officers and four lakh volunteers, are actively working to reach every section of society. Their focus includes the elderly, persons with disabilities, the economically disadvantaged, and voters in remote locations.
The process is further strengthened by the presence of 1,56,000 Booth Level Agents, appointed by all recognised political parties, including the Congress itself. Their role is to observe and verify the work, thus increasing public confidence and institutional credibility. Every party has equal opportunity to be part of the process, which leaves no room for complaints about exclusion or bias.
The results so far speak for themselves. As of 6 pm on July 10, the Election Commission had successfully collected over 5,22,00,000 enumeration forms, covering more than 66 per cent of Bihar's nearly eight crore electors within just 16 days. With 98 per cent of forms already distributed, the drive is progressing efficiently and is fully on track to meet its deadline of July 25.
This achievement reflects the seriousness, scale, and capability with which the ECI is handling a task of such magnitude. It is being executed smoothly, without causing public inconvenience, and with a level of dedication that deserves recognition and support from all political stakeholders.
Instead of cooperating with this constitutionally legitimate and transparent exercise, the Indi Alliance is attempting to derail it. The question every citizen must ask is simple. Why is a process aimed at ensuring clean and fair elections being opposed so vehemently? What is it that the alliance is so afraid of? Whose interests are they protecting by standing against an honest electoral clean-up?
This behaviour is not just irresponsible. It is a deliberate attempt to undermine the credibility of the ECI and cast doubt on the integrity of our institutions. When a political alliance chooses to weaken democracy to secure its vote bank, it stops serving the people and starts serving only its own power-hungry agenda.
Let the truth be known to every citizen of Bihar and to the entire country. The Congress-led alliance is using every trick in the book to obstruct SIR. They are not fighting for genuine voters. They are fighting to protect illegal and ineligible entries that they have long relied on for electoral gains.
They have failed to earn the trust of the people. Now, in desperation, they are trying to manufacture confusion and mistrust. Their actions reflect the fear that a clean electoral roll will finally expose decades of vote-bank politics and manipulation.
Bihar has always led revolutions and rejected jungle raj. It will not be misled by the lies of the opposition. Bihar deserves truth, not chaos. The people stand with honesty, transparency, and the Constitution, not with obstruction and deceit.

7 Murders In 10 Days: Ahead Of Bihar Polls, Spotlight On Rising Crime

Gopal Khemka. Ajit Kumar. Ramakant Yadav. Vikram Jha. Jitendra Kumar Mahato. Sushila Devi. Surendra Kewat. Most of these names may not sound familiar. But in Bihar, these names have become central to an escalating political flashpoint ahead of polls later this year. These are the people killed in Bihar over the last 10 days, triggering opposition questions on law and order on Nitish Kumar's watch, and "jungle raj" or lawlessness - a term used to brand the tenure of Lalu Yadav (from 1990-2005). Bihar has become the "crime capital of India", declared Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a post on X on Monday. Mr Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, cited media reports pointing to 31 murders in 11 days and the alleged "contract killing industry" in the state. "Bihar has become the 'crime capital of India' -- fear in every alley, unease in every home! Unemployed youth are being turned into killers by 'GuNDA raj'," said Mr Gandhi. Nitish Kumar's Deputy Vijay Kumar Sinha today said his government is taking strict action to prevent criminal activities. "We have said before that the government is taking action on every incident, and strict measures are being taken to prevent criminal activities," the Deputy Chief Minister told news agency ANI. In contrast, the second Deputy Chief Minister, Samrat Choudhary, said "it is a bit difficult" for the government to stop murders that, according to him, stemmed from personal disputes rather than any organised crime in the state. "There is good governance in Bihar, there is no organised crime. If a murder is taking place due to some personal dispute, then it is a bit difficult for the government to stop it. But no organised crime will be allowed to take place in Bihar. This is clear," he told ANI on Sunday. Mr Choudhary said this on a day a lawyer was shot dead in Patna's Sultanganj area. Jitendra Mahato, 58, died of his injuries during treatment at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on Sunday. Read | Lawyer Shot Dead In Patna, 3rd Murder In Full Public View In A Week To add to Nitish Kumar's troubles, one of his allies in the BJP-led NDA coalition, Union Minister Chirag Paswan, slammed the killings, calling it "beyond understanding". "How many Biharis will be murdered? It is beyond understanding what is the responsibility of Bihar Police," said the Hajipur MP, who has said several times that he may contest the state polls - a scenario that could pitch him as Nitish Kumar's rival for the top post in case of an NDA victory. Mr Paswan made the comments hours after the killing of Sushila Devi, a 60-year-old hospital worker shot dead in Nalanda on Saturday morning. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, leader of Opposition in the Bihar assembly, launched a scorching attack on Nitish Kumar over the weekend, questioning the Chief Minister's alleged "silence" on what he called the "rising crime graph of the state". The criticism was over the murder of Vikram Jha, a trader in Patna, on Saturday. "Businessman Vikram Jha was gunned down in Patna. DK Tax, the transfer industry and the chaotic situation of the state are the reasons for this. Why is the Chief Minister silent? Who is responsible for the hundreds of murder incidents happening in Bihar?" Mr Yadav asked. Read | "Is This Not Jungle Raj?" Opposition On Bihar Businessman's Murder On Sunday, Mr Yadav stepped up the attack after a lawyer was shot dead. "And now, a BJP leader shot dead in Patna! What to say, and to whom? Is there anyone in the NDA government willing to listen to the truth or admit their mistakes?" Mr Yadav posted on X. On July 4, prominent industrialist Gopal Khemka was gunned down outside his apartment in Patna around 11.37 pm, triggering shock and concern among the business community. Days later, sand trader Ramakant Yadav, a trader from Patna, was shot dead. Within a few days, Vikram Jha, owner of Trishna Mart, was gunned down in a late-night incident in the Zakariapur area in Patna. According to the latest State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) data, the state recorded 1,376 murders with an average of 229 each month between January and June, compared to 2,786 in 2024 and 2,863 in 2023. Proliferation of firearms, which are illegally manufactured or procured without a valid licence, coupled with unchecked availability of ammunition, have contributed to the recent spurt in violent crimes, say senior police officers. Bihar has consistently ranked among the top five states in terms of violent crimes, including those involving firearms, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) figures. The state has held the second position in violent crime rate in 2017, 2018, 2020 and 2022, NCRB data said. "Land disputes and property matters are the main reasons behind most of the killings. In such cases, the role of police is limited and it starts after the crime takes place. Our force has achieved 100 per cent detection rate," Director General of Police Vinay Kumar told news agency PTI. Another top police official said a large section of unemployed is a big factor in Bihar's law and order problems. "A state with such a large population, having over 60 per cent population under the age of 30 and unemployed, is bound to be vulnerable to law and order problems," Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) Kundan Krishnan said. The SCRB data further shows Patna as the leading district in Arms Act cases, averaging 321.7 cases annually, followed by Begusarai (167.7), Muzaffarpur (158.3), Nalanda (117.9), and Vaishali (117.8). A correlation between arms Act cases and violent crimes shows Patna again topping the list, averaging 82 violent incidents annually, followed by Motihari (49.53), Saran (44.08), Gaya (43.50), Muzaffarpur (39.93), and Vaishali (37.90). ‘Held responsible for someone else's mistake; everyone considered my aide': Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge

Karnataka Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge Monday said he was being held responsible for someone else's mistake, and everyone accused of wrongdoing in the state was considered his aide. He made this remark after photos of him, his father and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge with Lingaraj Kanni, a Congress worker from Kalaburagi who was arrested in Kalyan city, were shared on social media on Sunday. The Maharashtra Police arrested Kanni along with three others last month under the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act for allegedly supplying 120 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup. Responding to media queries, Priyank Kharge said that the Congress would not defend Kanni's crimes. 'We have recommended the district Congress unit to suspend him from the party,' he said. Kanni, he said, was the president of the Kalaburagi South Block Congress. 'He was a Congress office-bearer cannot be denied… Since he was in the party, it is normal that he shares the stage with me. Only for this reason, he is called my aide,' Priyank Kharge said. 'How is that everyone is my aide? In the Bidar case, they (the BJP) alleged that the accused were my aides. In the Belagavi PDO case, the accused was considered my aide,' he said, adding that he was being held responsible for someone else's mistake. The Congress neither encourages nor accepts such activities, the Karnataka minister said. 'If something happens in the Kalyana Karnataka region, then Priyank Kharge is held responsible. If it happens in Karnataka, I am responsible. If it happens in Kashmir or Canada, then too I am responsible according to the BJP,' the Congress minister added. The accused, Kanni, had joined the Congress from the BJP ahead of the Assembly elections in 2023.

Priyank Kharge says he is being held responsible for someone else's mistake

Karnataka Rural Development and Panchayat Raj minister Priyank Kharge said Monday that he was being held responsible for someone else's mistake and everyone accused of wrongdoing in Karnataka was considered his aide. The reaction came after the Opposition trained guns on him after photos of the minister and his father, AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, with Lingaraj Kanni, Congress worker from Kalaburagi who was arrested for allegedly supplying codeine-based cough syrup in Kalyan city, surfaced on social media Sunday. Kanni was arrested by Maharashtra police on June 22 along with three others for allegedly supplying 120 bottles of the syrup in Kalyan city, in violation of the Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances Act. Kanni, who is in the pharmaceutical business, allegedly supplied codeine bottles to three other accused. He had joined the Congress from BJP ahead of Assembly elections in 2023. As per the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, since people use codeine as a drug, it can only be supplied after a prescription and cannot be sold openly. An officer from Thane police said the arrests took place during police patrolling in Bakri Mandi Road in Kalyan, where a police team observed the three men behaving suspiciously. On searching them, the police found the bottles, following which the trio was placed under arrest. The three arrested accused were identified as Tausif Surve, 34, a driver; Linkgaraj Allgud, 40; and Irfan Ibrahim. Allgud and Ibrahim are residents of Karnataka. An officer said during interrogation, police sought to find the source of the codeine bottles, which led them to Kanni, who was arrested the same day. Responding to media queries, Kharge said that the Congress party would not defend his acts. 'We have recommended the district Congress unit to suspend him from the party,' he said. Kanni, he said, was the president of the Kalaburagi South Block Congress. 'He was a Congress office-bearer… Since he was in the party, it is normal that he shares the stage with me. Only for this reason, he is called my aide,' Kharge said. 'How is that everyone is my aide? In the Bidar case, they (the BJP) alleged that the accused were my aides. In the Belagavi PDO case, the accused was considered my aide,' he said, adding that he was being held responsible for someone else's mistake. The Congress neither encourages nor accepts such activities. The party condemns it and he will be suspended from the party, he said. 'If something happens in the Kalyana Karnataka region, then Priyank Kharge is held responsible. If it happens in Karnataka, I am responsible. If it happens in Kashmir or Canada, then too I am responsible according to the BJP,' the minister added. According to the police officer, the four accused were interrogated that led to the role of another accused who is on the run. 'The four accused are currently in judicial custody, and we are looking for the fifth accused,' the officer said. He added, 'We do not know who shared Kanni's photographs with political leaders, but it has nothing to do with our case. We are focused on getting the fifth accused.'
