Four Men Charged in Plot to Seize Land Near Quebec City
Four men, including members of the Canadian military, have been arrested and charged with planning to forcibly seize land near Quebec City in what the police described on Tuesday as an act of 'ideologically motivated violent extremism.' The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said three of the men 'took concrete actions to facilitate terrorist activity' and face terrorism charges. The authorities said they seized a large stockpile of guns, explosives and ammunition from the group. A fourth man faces a number of firearms and explosives charges. The four men will appear in court on Tuesday. Marc-Aurèle Chabot, 24, and Raphaël Lagacé, 25, who both live in Québec City, and Simon Angers-Audet, 24, of Neuville, Quebec, face a charge of 'facilitating a terrorist act.' Matthew Forbes, 33, of Pont-Rouge, Quebec, is charged with the explosives and weapons offenses. The police did not indicate which of the men are members of the armed forces. The statement from the police offered no information about the group's ideology or its motive for seizing the land. Photos released by the Mounties show at least seven people wearing what appear to be Canadian military fatigues and brandishing or firing weapons during what the police described as 'military-style training, as well as shooting, ambush, survival and navigation exercises.' The Mounties said that the group also held a 'a scouting operation.' The Canadian Armed Forces did not immediately respond to questions. But the investigation, which was conducted by a special national security team that includes members of Canada's intelligence service, prosecutors and other law enforcement agencies, appears to date back more than a year and half. During raids around Quebec City in January 2024, the police seized 16 explosive devices, 83 firearms, about 11,000 rounds of ammunition, about 130 magazines, four pairs of night vision goggles and other military equipment, the authorities said.

Competition Bureau advances investigation into Amazon's pricing policy
The Competition Bureau is advancing an investigation into Amazon to determine if the online seller is "engaging in conduct that may be an abuse of dominance," the agency said on Tuesday. According to the bureau, they're investigating the Amazon Marketplace Fair Pricing Policy, which allows Amazon to penalize sellers for some actions — including if they list an item for sale at a price that's considerably higher than a recent price that item had been offered at, either on Amazon or elsewhere. The goal of the investigation is to determine if the policy forces sellers to charge customers more than they otherwise would for a product, or if it prevents competition by keeping sellers from listing their products for lower prices elsewhere. The agency says they have obtained a court order that requires Amazon to hand over records and relevant information for the investigation. There is no conclusion of wrongdoing at this time, the Competition Bureau says. The Competition Bureau previously opened an investigation into Amazon in 2021, looking to determine if the company's marketing practices might be deceptive. That investigation also hasn't found any wrongdoing at this time. The new court order comes on the first day of Amazon Prime Day (which this year stretches from July 8 to 11), an annual event where Prime members get access to big discounts on the selling platform. 'Dangerous' man's horrific campaign of sexual abuse on child, 9
A man has been jailed for his campaign of sexual abuse on a child over the course of three years, starting when they were nine years old. Odday El-Saddi was earlier found guilty of 15 counts of sexual offences, including sexual assault of a child under 13, and rape of a child under 13. Appearing in court on Monday, July 7, El-Saddi, 48, of Regency Square, Warrington, was sentenced to 17 years in prison and ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life. Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Jessica Taylor said: "Firstly, I would like to commend the victim for the strength and courage they have shown throughout this case, and I hope the sentence handed to El-Saddi will provide them closure and a chance to move on with their life."El-Saddi is a dangerous individual, who sexually abused a child for years. He showed no remorse throughout the entire investigation, and even made his victim relive the experiences in court.'Thankfully, as a result of the evidence gathered and the bravery of the victim, the jury were able to see through his lies and he is now being held accountable for his actions."
