Saint-Etienne relegated as PSG celebrate with fans

The Advertiser18-05-2025
Saint-Etienne, one of Ligue 1's most storied clubs, has been relegated as Paris Saint-Germain celebrated their title with their fans on the final matchday.
Despite support from 38,000 buoyant spectators at sold-out Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, Saint-Etienne lost to Toulouse 3-2 on Saturday and could not avoid the drop.
Saint-Etienne, who dominated French soccer during the 1960s and '70s, joined last-placed Montpellier as the demoted teams. Saint-Etienne return immediately to Ligue 2
Le Havre avoided their fate by winning at Strasboug 3-2 thanks to a penalty from Abdoulaye Touré late in added time.
Touré, who completed a brace, converted the spot kick with a panenka, allowing his team to leapfrog Reims in the standings and remain in the top flight.
Reims will face Metz in the promotion-relegation playoff. Second-division side Metz edged Dunkerque to secure a spot in the two-leg playoff against Ligue 1's 16th-placed team.
In Paris, coach Luis Enrique fielded a full-strength squad as PSG celebrated their title at home against Auxerre.
PSG were caught cold by a first-half goal from Lassine Sinayoko and turned things around after the interval with efforts from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who scored twice, and captain Marquinhos, to win 3-1.
PSG won a record-extending 13th Ligue 1 title with six games to spare and are hoping for their first ever treble. In addition to the Champions League final against Inter Milan on May 31, Enrique's team play Reims in the French Cup final on May 24.
With 84 points, PSG set a new record for the most points in a 34-match season. They shared the previous record with Saint-Etienne, who achieved 81 points in the 1969-70 season.
Nice won the fourth and final spot in Champions League, a ticket to the third preliminary round, by thrashing Brest 6-0.
Lille ended fifth and qualified for the Europa League group stage.
In his final match with Lyon, Alexandre Lacazette scored his 200th and 201st goals for his boyhood club. Lacazette returned to Lyon in June 2022 and will leave as his contract expires. He left the seven-time French champion in 2017 for a then-club record 60 million euros after joining at age 12.
Lacazette scored from the penalty spot and a tap-in as Lyon beat Angers 2-0 to finish sixth.
Lacazette's brilliance was a rare satisfaction for Lyon fans as the club again missed out on Champions League football.
The club's future remains unclear after it was hit in November by a decision to provisionally relegate the side to Ligue 2 following an audit of the club's finances by the French league's soccer watchdog. The DNCG decided Lyon's financial situation must improve by the end of the season.
Mason Greenwood scored twice and delivered an assist as Marseille sealed a second-place finish by beating Rennes 4-2.
Marseille finished four points ahead third-placed Monaco, who lost to Lens 4-0.
Former Manchester United forward Greenwood's 20th and 21st goals helped him finish joint top-scorer in the league with PSG's Ousmane Dembélé. Under the league rules, Dembelé will take the trophy because he scored less penalties than Greenwood.

Prosecutors call for PSG's Achraf Hakimi to face rape trial

French prosecutors on Friday called for Paris Saint-Germain star Achraf Hakimi to face trial for the alleged rape of a woman in 2023 which the Moroccan international denies. The Nanterre prosecutor's office told AFP that they had requested that the investigating judge refer the rape charge to a criminal court. "It is now up to the investigating magistrate to make a decision within the framework of his order," the prosecutor's office told AFP in a statement. Hakimi, 26, played a major role in PSG's run to their first Champions League title, the full-back scoring the opener in the 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in the final in May. Hakimi, who helped Morocco to their historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, was charged in March, 2023 with raping a 24-year-old woman. Hakimi allegedly paid for his accuser to travel to his home on February 25, 2023, in the Paris suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt while his wife and children were away on holiday. The woman went to a police station following the encounter alleging rape and was questioned by police. Although the woman refused to make a formal accusation, prosecutors decided to press charges against the player. She told police at the time that she had met Hakimi in January 2023 on Instagram. On the night in question she said she had travelled to his house in a taxi paid for by Hakimi. She told police Hakimi had started kissing her and making non consensual sexual advances, before raping her, a police source told AFP at the time. She said she managed to break free to text a friend who came to pick her up. Contacted by AFP after Friday's development Hakimi's lawyer Fanny Colin described the call by prosecutors for a trial as "incomprehensible and senseless in light of the case's elements". "We, along with Achraf Hakimi, remain as calm as we were at the start of the proceedings. "If these requisitions were to be followed, we would obviously pursue all avenues of appeal," she added. "My client welcomes this news with immense relief," Rachel-Flore Pardo, the lawyer representing the woman, told AFP. Hakimi, born in Madrid, came through the youth system at Real Madrid before joining Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in 2018. He went on to make 73 appearances for the German club. He moved to Inter Milan in 2020 and then on to PSG in 2021 where he has established himself as an integral part of the team. In Qatar, Hakimi was a cornerstone of the Morocco team that became the first African or Arab nation to reach the semi-finals of a World Cup. adr/asl/nr/ea Breaking News Trump envoy's visit will be 'important', Moscow says Breaking News Tycoon who brought F1 to Singapore pleads guilty in graft case

Son Heung-min will not be part of Tottenham's Post-Ange era, Liverpool won't make second Isak bid

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min has told media that he will leave the club this summer after a decade in north London. The 33-year-old attacker joined the Premier League side from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and went on to play more than 450 times for Spurs. In May he lifted the Europa League trophy but he had a poor season overall by his high standards and struggled with a series of leg injuries. 'Before we start the press conference I wanted to say I have decided to leave the club this summer,' the South Korean told reporters in Seoul, where Tottenham are on a pre-season tour. 'Respectfully the club is helping me with this decision.' Son, who has scored 173 goals for Spurs, did not say where he intends to go next and cut an emotional figure. He has been linked with a move to the MLS in the United States. 'It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career. Such amazing memories. It was so hard to make the decision,' Son said, flanked by new Tottenham boss Thomas Frank. 'I need a new environment to push myself. I need a little bit of change -- 10 years is a long time. I came to north London as a kid, 23 years old, such a young age. 'I leave this club as a grown man, a very proud man.' Speaking in Korean, Son said that winning a European trophy -- Tottenham's first European crown in 41 years -- played 'a big part' in his thinking. 'Winning a title in Europe felt like I had achieved everything I possibly could,' he said. 'I spent a lot of time reflecting on whether I wanted to experience football in a different environment, and I had those conversations with myself over and over again.' Frank, who joined Spurs from Brentford in June, paid tribute to the South Korean skipper. 'For me, personally, I would have loved to have worked with this fantastic person and player,' said the Dane, who took over from the sacked Ange Postecoglou. 'He is a true Spurs legend in every aspect, one of the greatest players to play in the Premier League.' Spurs will face Newcastle United on Sunday in Seoul, and Son is guaranteed a rapturous reception in front of his home fans. Spurs have had a fairly quiet summer in the transfer market so far, with attacking midfielder Mohammed Kudus from West Ham their only major acquisition. Morgan Gibbs-White had looked set to follow from Nottingham Forest but a £60 million move broke down. Liverpool take shock stance in Isak transfer twist - talkSPORT Liverpool have no imminent plans to make a second bid for Alexander Isak after having their £110m ($225m AUD) bid rejected, talkSPORT understands. The Reds made the huge offer for the Swedish striker on Friday morning, but it was turned down by Newcastle. And the nature of that rebuttal has meant the Reds have decided not to follow up with a second approach this transfer window. It is understood the club don't want to get dragged into a cycle of rejected bids. Liverpool now regard another bid as futile unless Newcastle change their stance and contact them. Personal terms over any potential deal are not expected to be an issue, as Isak wants the move to Anfield. The Magpies want to keep their star forward, or at least source a replacement before possibly agreeing to sell him. They have been pushing to bring in Benjamin Sesko, while Yoane Wissa is boycotting Brentford training as he eyes a transfer. Liverpool backed up their extreme interest with a monster bid for Isak, who is training away from his teammates too. The 25-year-old hasn't travelled on the Magpies' pre-season tour as he explores a potential move away from the club. He is currently training at his former club Real Sociedad in Spain and Newcastle are understood to be aware of the situation. Liverpool's opening offer came a week after Isak had admitted he wants to explore his options this summer. But unless Isak's side now start negotiations with the Reds again, it seems they won't be coming back in with a second bid. Making feelings known Liverpool's opening bid came after Newcastle fans made their feelings clear on Isak's situation. A banner was pictured hanging outside the club's training ground, reading: 'Isak is a pure rat.' Of course, this act won't reflect the entirety of the Toon fanbase, however, it shows that his reputation is now damaged to some. There is little sympathy from a part of the fanbase, but one person who does feel for him is teammate Anthony Gordon. Gordon had held talks with Liverpool over a potential move last summer, and it appeared to be close to completion. However, nothing ended up materialising and he went on to sign a new Newcastle contract in October. The England international has now opened up about that move and related it to what Isak is now going through. Gordon said in an interview with the Daily Mail: 'With PSR, I thought I was going to leave at some point in the window. It didn't happen. 'I had to get my head around that to begin with, and then to get my head around it again was hard. I'm a human being.' He added: 'I understand what Alex is going through. I feel for him. 'He will be going through a lot. The club is going through a lot. 'I hope everyone gets what they want in the end.' Football An angry parent says junior footballers have been 'carved up and told you don't exist' amid a proposed overhaul which has left about 1000 players in jeopardy. How a 10-year-old yellow labrador called Charlie became a surfing sensation

Charlie, a 10-year-old yellow lab in California, likes surfing so much that he will grab his surfboard and run toward the water. His humans sometimes have to hide his board if they want to chat with friends on the beach. Charlie joined about 15 to 20 other canine wave riders in Pacifica, 22 kilometres south of San Francisco, on Saturday at the World Dog Surfing Championships, an annual contest that draws thousands of spectators to Pacifica State Beach. Pooches competed against similarly sized peers for a chance to appear in the finals. Additional heats featured multiple dogs surfing tandem or riding with people. Labs, terriers and spaniels in monogrammed life vests dog-paddled out into the Pacific. Once out on the waves, their owners helped them hop on colourful boards and hang 10 as the crowd cheered from the beach. Judges scrutinised how long the dogs remained on their boards, how long they held their balance and whether they performed tricks such as turning around while riding. Iza, a 5-year-old French bulldog, won the single surfer heat for medium-size dogs for the first time this year, her owner, David Fasoli, said. Fasoli found 'pure joy' during the pandemic when he brought home a surfboard from his job at Costco and taught Iza to balance in the swimming pool. The two soon started swimming in the ocean and learning to ride waves as passersby at the beach watched in awe. Now their competitions are all about defying expectations.
