Psychologist urges urgent reform to battle deepfakes following teen's arrest
Eight reports were lodged against the student. The case is being investigated under Section 292 of the Penal Code for the sale, distribution, or circulation of obscene materials and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for sharing offensive and inappropriate content.
The psychologist said deepfakes are becoming a serious global concern, particularly within the digital and cyber landscape.
Kamal added that parents and schools must equip children with the knowledge and tools to navigate digital spaces safely, as there is a critical need to raise awareness about the dos and don'ts of social media use.
'It's no understatement to say that social media has become a child's modern-day playground. With this reality in mind, young people must be equipped with accessible, age-appropriate information about consent and boundaries,' Kamal told Twentytwo13.
'This knowledge empowers them to understand whether their actions — or the actions of others — are right or wrong, potentially preventing them from becoming either a victim or a perpetrator.
'Doing this can protect young people from harm and help them become responsible digital citizens in an increasingly complex online world.'
Schools and families must do more
Kamal said there is an urgent need to stop sweeping the 'controversial' topic under the rug. Ignoring these issues will only allow more young people to become silent victims of predators.
'It's time we take proactive steps in education, policy, and community dialogue to protect and empower our youth in the digital age,' he said.
Kamal suggested that the relevant authorities create digital platforms to educate young people about the dangers of deepfake technology and online misconduct.
One method would be through interactive online games designed specifically to highlight what constitutes harmful behaviour and how one could be held accountable.
'Imagine a game integrated into school curricula, where every student must complete it as part of their digital literacy or personal development programme.
'Through real-life scenarios and choices, they could learn about consent, boundaries, consequences, and the psychological impact of malicious online activity in a way that's engaging, age-appropriate, and memorable,' said Kamal.
'Schools should also integrate comprehensive digital safety and sex education into their curricula, focusing not only on biological aspects but also on the psychosocial impacts of online harm.'
Kamal said families must take an active role in monitoring their children's screen time and utilise appropriate tools or software to prevent malicious online predators from targeting them.
'Open communication between parents and children about online safety is key.'
Psychological impact
He said the psychological impact of such violations can be deeply damaging, especially for young people. This disturbing trend is reflected in the growing number of youths experiencing mental health challenges as a result of online abuse and exploitation.
Kamal said there is a danger to long-term mental health if the victims are threatened or manipulated by perpetrators who hint at or imply the existence of such content.
This fear can lead to anxiety, distrust, and underlying mental health challenges if the threats are prolonged or emotionally distressing.
'There needs to be more dialogue around the growing challenges faced by our youth. I've emphasised the importance of shifting from reactive measures to proactive, preventive strategies by policymakers,' said Kamal.
He added that there is a psychological connection between online anonymity and moral disengagement.
'The sense of anonymity on online platforms often gives individuals a false sense of detachment from their actions.
'When people feel they can't be identified, they're more likely to disregard moral responsibility, leading to increased risks of abuse, harassment, and even criminal behaviour.
'This highlights the urgent need for digital ethics education and stronger accountability mechanisms in online spaces.'

‘Queen's Night' probe widens: Police warn remaining eHati participants to come forward or face arrest
SHAH ALAM, July 16 — Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan has urged members of the public who took part in the eHati 'Queen's Night' marriage motivation programme to give their statements at the Shah Alam District Police Headquarters (IPD) as soon as possible. He said they have identified around 50 participants, of whom 30 have been interviewed. The remaining individuals have been asked to come forward or face arrest. 'We have already recorded statements from several participants. However, there are still individuals, including public sector employees, who were involved and have yet to step forward. We will not hesitate to arrest them,' Hussein said. The case is being investigated under Section 209 (false claims), Section 14 (minor offences), and Section 294 of the Penal Code, which includes offences committed under the guise of religion. Among those arrested are six individuals — four women and two men — believed to be married couples who participated in the so-called Queen's Night session, a four-day, three-night retreat offered under 'Package B' of the eHati programme. Queen's Night reportedly involved nudity and lewd acts. Police have also seized various items from the event, including liquids believed to have been used during ritual-like activities. These materials have been sent to the Ministry of Health for further analysis to determine whether they contain banned substances or drugs. 'This programme has been organised before, but this is the first time we're seeing something like a 'Queen's Night' session. That element is new and is central to our investigation,' said Hussein. The programme was organised by a company known as eHati, which offers corporate motivational and self-development courses. Police clarified that participants are not official members of eHati and that investigations are focusing on both facilitators and participants. Authorities are also working to determine whether the event violated any religious sensitivities or misused religious elements to manipulate attendees. 'Not everyone who attended the programme is Muslim; individuals of other races were present as well,' said Hussein. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari was reported to have asked the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) to look into allegations of immoral activities during the organisation of eHati programmes at a convention centre here. JAIS director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad confirmed the case is being investigated under Section 7 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995.

Cyberjaya student murder: Male suspect to be charged under Section 302, says Selangor police chief
KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — A male suspect in the murder of university student Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara in Cyberjaya is expected to be charged soon under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said. The charge was initially expected to be brought before the Sepang magistrates' court at 8.30am today, according to earlier reports. However, Sepang police chief Norhizam Bahaman later confirmed that the case has been postponed to a date yet to be determined, according to a report in Free Malaysia Today. Three suspects — a man and two women aged 19 and 20 — were arrested between June 26 and June 27 in Johor Baru and Gemencheh, Negeri Sembilan, following the discovery of Maniishapriet's body. The victim, a student at the University of Cyberjaya, was found dead in her condominium unit by a friend on June 24. She had been living with five housemates, who had returned to their hometowns for the holidays on June 21. Police said all three suspects were known to the victim and confirmed there were no signs of forced entry into her unit. An autopsy determined that she died from blunt force trauma to the head and showed no evidence of sexual assault. Authorities also revealed that the male suspect used Maniishapriet's debit card to withdraw money from multiple ATMs shortly after her death. Her laptop, mobile phone, and some cash were also reported missing from the unit. The remand orders for all three suspects have been extended until July 1

‘Thought it was firecrackers': Witness recalls 10 shots before panic erupted in Brickfields restaurant
KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — A witness to a shooting at a restaurant on Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Brickfields, last night claimed she heard about 10 gunshots during the incident. According to Harian Metro, the witness, Letchumi, said the shooting occurred between 10.30pm and 10.50pm while she was speaking with a customer at her salon located on the upper floor of the building above the restaurant. 'I was outside the shop, on the upper-level walkway, when I suddenly heard loud noises — like explosions. 'At first, I thought someone was setting off firecrackers, but I couldn't think of any festival. 'When I looked down, I saw people hiding under tables. That's when I knew something serious had happened,' she reportedly told the national daily. She said panic soon broke out, with people running in all directions to escape. Some ran into her salon to take shelter, as most of the other nearby shops were already closed. 'Some rushed upstairs, so I called them into the shop to shelter with my customer, who was terrified. 'I called the police. I didn't see the gunman, but I saw one of the victims trying to run. 'I believe he had already been shot and was trying to escape. By the time police arrived, the gunman had fled,' she was quoted as saying. She added that this was the first such incident in the area, which is usually calm late into the night. Last night, three men were shot while dining at the restaurant, with one killed and two others injured. The shooting took place at around 10.50pm. The three victims, all Malaysians aged between 30 and 50, were eating with friends when two men on a motorcycle approached and opened fire. Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Ku Mashariman said investigations are ongoing, including reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage to determine the motive and identify those involved. 'We are confident the suspects will be identified soon. The public should not be alarmed by this incident. 'The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Anyone with information is urged to contact the police or the nearest police station,' he reportedly said.
