PARTLY FACETIOUS: Cholistan and China experience
'If you are referring to the Cholistan project and the canals that Sindh, across the board now, has taken strong exception to…'
'There is agreement, I mean even the Man Who Must Remain Nameless and Faceless, expressed an admiration for the Chinese economic model as poverty was eradicated in less than five to six decades…'
'One lifetime…'
'Working lifetime.'
'OK?!'
'The reason why I corrected you is that in most working areas, five to six decades ends one's working life. Not true in this country.'
'If you are referring to extensions…'
'Nope, not at all. I am referring to our politicians who remain relevant even when their health has deteriorated to a level…'
'Oh right. Once you have partaken of high office, read manna, then it's very difficult to step down a day before the end.'
'Hmmm but speaking of Cholistan and China experience, do you recall that at one time all Chinese, irrespective of qualifications, had to work on farms…'
'Stop right there. Don't be facetious. I mean I can't possibly imagine even The Man Who Must Remain Nameless and Faceless, the fittest of the lot, volunteering to work on the farm. I mean it's a backbreaking job.'
'How about sending the entire cricket team to a farm for a bit – I reckon their stamina may improve.'
'Their cricket may not.'
'It's not as if their cricket is improving with all the money being spent on the Board members and those that the Board hires and pays, and the team selected and…'
'That reminds me; that is what I meant when I began by saying it indicated a lack of good, decent manners. The Brown Pope is the only Pakistani who sought an audience with Pope Francis and was granted and he is the only one who has not expressed his condolence on his death. I mean, that's not…'
'Back off. The Brown Pope is considering who to commiserate with.'
'Don't be facetious.'
'No, seriously, he is waiting for the next Pope to be elected…'
'Elected or selected?'
'Hmmm I guess he will be guided by his own experience rather than…than…'
'Gotcha.'

Kashmir issue echoes at United Nations
Pakistani Ambassador to the United Nations Asim Iftikhar Ahmad speaks during a United Nations Security Council meeting on the Israel-Iran conflict at the UN headquarters in New York on June 20, 2025. Photo: AFP Pakistan's Ambassador to the United Nations Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, who assumed the UN Security Council's presidency for July on Tuesday, has underscored the need for resolving the Kashmir dispute, which he said was causing tensions and frictions between India and Pakistan. "It is time that this (Kashmir dispute) be addressed, and I would say this is not only a responsibility of Pakistan — we are here temporarily, two years as a non-permanent member," he told a crowded news conference at UN Headquarters in New York, while responding to a question. "I think it's the responsibility of the Security Council itself, and particularly the permanent members to see that they take certain steps to actually get their own resolutions implemented," Ambassador Asim Iftikhar said. "That's the way forward," he added. Ahead of the press conference, the 15-member council met and approved the programme of work for the month of July. "Our approach is firmly rooted in the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, peaceful settlement of disputes, sovereign equality, respect for international law and multilateralism," Ambassador Asim Iftikhar told UN corps of correspondents. Pakistan, he said, will convene two signature events during its presidency - a high-level debate on "Promoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and Peaceful Settlement of Disputes," scheduled for 22 July, and on UN-OIC cooperation on July 24. Both debates will be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Ishaq Dar. Moreover, DPM/FM Dar would also preside over the quarterly open debate on Palestine on July 23. "The debates stem from the reality that today's crises often emerge from unresolved disputes, the erosion of international obligations, and the underutilization of peaceful means enshrined in Chapter VI of the Charter," the Pakistani envoy said. "We aim to: Reflect on the effectiveness of dispute settlement mechanisms; Discuss obstacles to implementation of Council decisions; Explore ways to enhance diplomacy, mediation and technical support; and Reinforce the commitments made in the Pact for the Future to preventive diplomacy and peaceful dispute resolution." On Kashmir, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar also said that all issues on the Security Council's agenda can be discussed any time and the decades-old dispute over the Himalayan state was on agenda under India-Pakistan question. The UN Security Council has pronounced on it in several resolutions that, among other elements, grant the Kashmiri people their right to self-determination, he said. "It is festering dispute, It has several dimensions," the Pakistan envoy said, noting its peace and security dimension, political and legal dimension, and it also human rights dimension. "This is an issue that has been there unresolved; It is a cause of tensions and frictions between India and Pakistan. It is impeding development of friendly relations in our region. It is time that this be addressed," he added. The Council, he said, will remain focused on key global issues, including the situation in the Middle East and developments in Africa, Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

Court throws out pleaseeking case against US President Trump
The additional district and sessions court for District West on Monday threw out a petition seeking the registration of a criminal case against US President Donald Trump, ruling that the plea was not maintainable under both Pakistani and international law. Judge Ameerud Din Rana held that heads of state enjoy immunity under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961), which precludes Pakistani courts from initiating criminal proceedings against an incumbent or former foreign head of state. The petition was filed by a local citizen, Jamshed Ali Khawaja, through his counsel Barrister Jaffar Abbas Jafri, who contended that Trump's actions, particularly the ordering of a military strike in Iran, had adversely affected millions of people, including Pakistani citizens. The petitioner sought the registration of a case under Sections 124, 125, 126, and 228 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), clarifying that he was not demanding Trump's arrest, merely the initiation of legal proceedings. During the hearing, the judge asked the petitioner's counsel to explain the applicability of the Vienna Convention. In response, Barrister Jafri argued that while international law affords immunity from arrest, it does not entirely bar prosecution of heads of state. He also objected to the presence of the government's legal representative, arguing that no formal notice had been issued to the state. The court, however, overruled the objection, stating that the law officer had been summoned to assist the court on legal points. The government's counsel submitted that the petition was devoid of legal merit and argued that under both Pakistani law and international treaties, the US president is entitled to immunity.
