People beat the heat across Massachusetts as more pools are set to open this weekend
Temperatures hit 90 degrees for the first time in Boston this year on Thursday and many families headed out to splash pads to cool down, with more pools set to open this weekend ahead of a potential heat wave.

"Luckily we live in walking distance of so many splash pads and playgrounds. That's really, really nice that Boston makes that so accessible," said one nanny.
At Artesani Park in Brighton, parents, nannies and kids found themselves in good company: A long line of hot people stretched around the wading pool.
"We've been waiting for probably about 35 minutes to get in the pool. It's been pretty hot. We have some pregnant ladies with us so we're a little worried about them," one mother said.
24 pools DCR pools open this weekend
More options will open up this weekend, as 24 Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) pools open across the state Saturday, in addition to the more than 30 beaches with lifeguards.
"It's going to be a hot week coming up and we're excited to be able to bring some cooling opportunities to the community. And of course to make that happen in a safe manner we've hired over 580 lifeguards to get through this summer season and we're still looking for about another 50 more," explained DCR's Director of Pool and Waterfront Safety Shawn DeRosa.
The state offers cash incentives to lifeguards who work through the summer, and covers the cost of training. DCR is also offering free swimming lessons at 19 pools across the state this summer. Registration for the second and third sessions opens at 8 a.m. on June 30 and July 14, respectively.

Severe storm triggers hundreds of flight cancellations at busy Atlanta airport just as holiday travel cranks up
Hundreds of flights have been canceled at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport – the busiest airport in the world – after a severe storm overnight, just as a busy travel period ahead of the Fourth of July gets started. Over 450 flights into and out of Atlanta were canceled as of early Saturday afternoon, according to FlightAware. Hundreds more were delayed. Delta – which uses the Atlanta airport as its hub – is suffering the worst from cancellations, with 14% of the airline's total flights canceled, according to FlightAware. 'Severe weather overnight is causing delays and cancellations,' the airport said Saturday in a post on X, Powerful winds in Atlanta prompted the evacuation of most air traffic controllers from the control tower Friday evening, according to CNN affiliate WANF, citing the Federal Aviation Administration. A small crew stayed to handle inbound planes, reported WANF. Additionally, severe thunderstorms overnight brought quarter-inch hail to the city. More than 100 Delta aircraft require inspection before they're allowed to fly as a result, a Delta employee familiar with the situation told CNN as of late Friday evening. Delta's maintenance team was working 'quickly through the backlog,' the Delta employee said. There was also a ground stop in place Friday evening due to the severe weather, which limits inbound aircraft from taking off. The mounting delays come as millions of people prepare to travel for the Fourth of July. The AAA estimates that 72.2 million people will travel at least 50 miles or more from home during the holiday period, starting from Saturday, June 28, until Sunday, July 6, with 5.84 million travelers expected to fly to their destinations. The Atlanta airport expects to see 394,576 passengers over the holiday period, according to WANF. The Hartsfield-Jackson airport served over 100 million passengers in 2024, making it busier than London's Heathrow or the Dubai International Airport. According to the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans, the break happened in the 2600 block of Upperline Street, with crews isolating a portion of the affected area by around 1:45 a.m. on Saturday, and working to restore pressure in the Uptown area.
