Andrew Cuomo to run as an independent candidate in New York mayor's race
Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Monday he will campaign for mayor of New York City as an independent candidate, staying in a crowded field running against surging left-wing Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani. In a video, Cuomo, who last month suffered a bruising loss to Mamdani in the Democratic primary, announced he was making another run to combat the progressive Mamdani, who he said 'offers slick slogans but no real solutions.' EU prepares list of additional counter-tariffs on US$84 billion of US imports
The European Union is preparing additional counter-tariffs on imports from the US worth €72 billion (US$84 billion), EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said on Monday, following new tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump Advertisement The EU is still hoping to find a negotiated solution in a dispute with Washington over alleged trade imbalances and threatened tariff increases. Brussels wants to avoid imposing the counter-tariffs. Trump recently announced that he is imposing 30 per cent tariffs on imports from the bloc as of August 1. EU trade ministers met in Brussels on Monday to discuss how to respond to the latest announcement and to prepare countermeasures. The list, now presented to EU member states, is based on a proposal by the European Commission in May and initially covered mainly industrial and agricultural goods with an import volume of around €95 billion (US$110 billion). After consultations with capitals and industry representatives, the list was amended. Sefcovic did not provide any details on what goods were taken off the list.
