US senators aim to arm Trump with ‘sledgehammer' sanctions against Russia

Trump has indicated he would be open to the sanctions bill as relations with Russian counterpart
Vladimir Putin grow increasingly frosty.
US special envoy Keith Kellogg is expected to begin his latest visit to Ukraine while Trump said he would make a 'major statement … on Russia' on Monday.
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said he had majority backing in the Senate for his bill, which was gaining momentum as Washington-led peace efforts in
Ukraine have struggled to make headway.
The bill would allow
Trump 'to go after Putin's economy, and all those countries who prop up the Putin war machine', Graham told broadcaster CBS news.

Zelensky names new prime minister, taps official who spearheaded US minerals deal
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko on Monday to lead a new government, setting the stage for a political reshuffle as Ukraine's war with Russia raged on. Zelensky also proposed that Ukraine's current prime minister, Denys Shmyhal, take over as defence minister, describing him as holding the right qualifications for a very important job. The nominations, which require parliamentary approval, came as diplomatic efforts to end the war, now in its fourth year, have stalled and as Ukraine seeks to revive its cash-strapped economy and build up a domestic arms industry. 'We … discussed concrete measures to boost Ukraine's economic potential, expand support programmes for Ukrainians, and scale up our domestic weapons production,' Zelensky wrote on social media. 'In pursuit of this goal, we are initiating a transformation of the executive branch in Ukraine ,' he said, adding that he had proposed that Svyrydenko lead the government and 'significantly renew its work'. Svyrydenko, 39, is an economist and has served as first deputy prime minister since 2021. She played a key role in recent negotiations for a minerals deal with the United States In his nightly video address, Zelensky praised Shmyhal's 'vast experience' as very 'valuable in the position of minister of defence of Ukraine'.

Andrew Cuomo to run as an independent candidate in New York mayor's race
Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Monday he will campaign for mayor of New York City as an independent candidate, staying in a crowded field running against surging left-wing Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani. In a video, Cuomo, who last month suffered a bruising loss to Mamdani in the Democratic primary, announced he was making another run to combat the progressive Mamdani, who he said 'offers slick slogans but no real solutions.' 'The fight to save our city isn't over,' Cuomo said. 'Only 13 per cent of New Yorkers voted in the June primary. The general election is in November and I am in it to win it.' Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams also is running as an independent in the general election and Curtis Sliwa – founder of the 1970s-era Guardian Angels anti-crime patrol – is again on the Republican line. People opposed to Mamdani's progressive agenda, which includes higher taxes on the wealthy, have called on donors and voters to unite behind a single candidate for the November election. They fear multiple candidates will splinter the anti-Mamdani vote, increasing the Democrat's chances to win. The decision to continue in the race is the latest chapter in Cuomo's comeback attempt, launched almost four years after he resigned as governor in 2021 following a barrage of sexual harassment allegations. He denied wrongdoing during the campaign, maintaining that the scandal was driven by politics.

EU prepares list of additional counter-tariffs on US$84 billion of US imports
The European Union is preparing additional counter-tariffs on imports from the US worth €72 billion (US$84 billion), EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said on Monday, following new tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump Advertisement The EU is still hoping to find a negotiated solution in a dispute with Washington over alleged trade imbalances and threatened tariff increases. Brussels wants to avoid imposing the counter-tariffs. Trump recently announced that he is imposing 30 per cent tariffs on imports from the bloc as of August 1. EU trade ministers met in Brussels on Monday to discuss how to respond to the latest announcement and to prepare countermeasures. The list, now presented to EU member states, is based on a proposal by the European Commission in May and initially covered mainly industrial and agricultural goods with an import volume of around €95 billion (US$110 billion). After consultations with capitals and industry representatives, the list was amended. Sefcovic did not provide any details on what goods were taken off the list. Advertisement The list came in addition to a proposal to restrict EU exports of steel scrap and chemical products to the US worth €4.4 billion (US$5.1 billion).
