David Schwimmer Slams Hollywood Friends For 'Unacceptable' Antisemitism Silence

Yahoo08-03-2025
"Friends" star is taking a stand against antisemitism and calling out Hollywood stars for their silence.
The 58-year-old actor, best known for his role as Ross Geller on the iconic sitcom, addressed the issue during a powerful speech at the Anti-Defamation League's Never Is Now conference on Tuesday.
David Schwimmer urged fellow celebrities, particularly those who have built their careers by embracing their Jewish identity or portraying Jewish characters on screen, to publicly condemn rising antisemitic sentiments.
His message was clear: silence is not an option.
"Plenty of people I respect, even some of my heroes in entertainment, music and sports, have chosen to keep a low profile and sit this one out, including some whose careers have been made by leaning into their Jewish identity, and others who have won acclaim for playing Jews onscreen," he began. "Some of them are doing a lot behind the scenes, privately and in their own way, but so many have chosen not to say anything publicly at all."
Schwimmer added, "And if I can say something directly to them: I really wish you would. I wish you would stand up. I wish you would speak out, because your voice would be so meaningful to your fans who love you, to your community members who need you, to folks who can use just a little solidarity right now."
But he didn't stop there. "No one's asking you to solve the conflict of the Middle East," the actor continued. "Just say that you stand with your Jewish friends, colleagues, and neighbors against hatred and what's happening on our college campuses and in our schools and to Jewish-owned businesses is totally unacceptable."
Actress also delivered a powerful message at the Anti-Defamation League's Never is Now conference, where she received the prestigious International Leadership Award. The "Wonder Woman" star took the stage to passionately address the surge in antisemitism and called for the immediate release of hostages held in Gaza.
During her 12-minute acceptance speech, Gadot emphasized her pride in being an eighth-generation Jewish Israeli, drawing loud applause from the audience.
"With every hostage release we hear new testimonies of the horrors they've been through. Every minute for them is hell. Their lives are in danger and we need them home," Gadot declared, her voice resonating with urgency.
Addressing the rise in global antisemitism, Gadot did not mince words. "None of us can ignore the explosion of Jew hatred around the world anymore. We have had enough of Jew hatred we will confront anti-Semitism," she added. "We will call it out, but we will never let it not only defeat us but define us because our love is stronger than their hate."
Following her appearance, Gadot took to Instagram to share a heartfelt message with her 133.6 million followers. She reflected on the significance of standing up against hate and emphasized the resilience of the Jewish community.
"October 7 was a wake-up call, but it also reminded us of our resilience and unbreakable bond," the Israel Defense Forces veteran, who boasts 133.6M social media followers, wrote. "We must continue to educate, share our stories, and stand up against hate — because love will always be stronger."
Schwimmer also recently called on to take action against , now known as Ye, following the rapper's latest antisemitic outbursts on the social media platform X.
The 58-year-old actor took to Instagram over the weekend, criticizing Musk for allowing West to maintain a platform despite his repeated history of hate speech. The actor's powerful message came in response to Ye's most recent controversial post, in which he stated, 'I don't like or trust no Jewish person, and this is completely sober with no Hennessy.'
In his post, Schwimmer did not hold back, stating:
'We can't stop a deranged bigot from spewing hate-filled, ignorant bile… but we CAN stop giving him a megaphone, Mr. Musk. Kanye West has 32.7 million followers on your platform, X. That's twice as many people than the number of Jews in existence. His sick hate speech results in REAL LIFE violence against Jews.
I don't know what's worse, the fact that he identifies as a Nazi (which implies he wants to exterminate ALL marginalized communities including his own) or the fact that there is not sufficient OUTRAGE to remove and ban him from all social media at this point.
Silence is complicity."
The actor's plea follows Kanye's controversial post, in which he stated, "I don't like or trust no Jewish person, and this is completely sober with no Hennessy."

Blocked ‘Bang, Bang, Bang!' Blessings: Marlon Wayans Alleges NBC Rejected ‘The Wayans Bros.' Because John Witherspoon's Pops Was ‘Too Ghetto'

Marlon Wayans recently alleged that if it were up to NBC, The Wayans Bros. never would've had one of the most iconic characters, John Witherspoon's Pops. The gag is… network execs wanted someone like Danny Glover instead. Source: Ethan Miller/Earl Gibson III / Getty Imagine the beloved sitcom without its biggest scene-stealer! On the latest episode of Baby, This Is Keke Palmer , Marlon shared that NBC allegedly tried to yeet Mr. 'Yitadee' himself, John Witherspoon. 'We didn't make it to NBC. We did a table reading, and they thought [Witherspoon's character] was too ghetto. And they wanted us to have a different father…like a Danny Glover type, and we was like, 'No,'' Wayans recalled. NBC had a lot of power in the era of hit shows like ER and Friends , the Him actor and his big brother Shawn weren't new to this. The silly siblings had their own track record of success as movie stars and network TV veterans of a historic comedy show. In Living Color was such a breakout hit that it created the Super Bowl Halftime Show as we know it and solidified Fox's status as the fourth major broadcast network. The same dynasty behind stars like Jim Carrey and Jamie Foxx knows comedic gold when they see it. 'It's the flavor of the show. We was like, 'It's John Witherspoon or it's not.' … We ain't going to do the show. And they was like, 'Well, negro, you're not doing the show,'' he continued. A legend like Danny Glover was tempting, but Wayans and his team refused to fumble the Friday star's unmatched energy for respectability politics. Fortunately, the WB understood the assignment. 'We was like 'Wait, hold on, Danny Glover, you say?' But then, the WB was starting, and it was like, 'I think that's a great combination.' So, everything is God. One man's trash is another man's treasure, and it's not about the doors that close; it's the ones that open up,' Wayans said. The show went forward as planned, starring Witherspoon as the Pops we know and love. The series premiered on the WB in January 1995, with its fifth and final season ending in May 1999. Witherspoon passed away from a heart attack in 2019 at 77 years old. Wayans went on to discuss dealing with grief, starring in the next Jordan Peele film, his Wild Child tour, and the upcoming return of the horror spoof franchise with Scary Movie 6 . Moment Groom Makes Horrible Mistake During Vows Caught on Camera: 'Oh Dear'

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A wedding ceremony in the English countryside took an unexpected turn when a nervous groom said something his bride will never forget. In a clip on TikTok, husband and wife Andrew, 51, and Rebecca Fildes, 43, stood before friends and family in Ampthill, Bedfordshire, exchanging vows on what should have been a picture-perfect day. But things briefly veered off-script when the groom accidentally blurted out his ex-girlfriend's name—just as he was about to marry the love of his life. Andrew, holding Rebecca's hands in his, responded, "I take you, Sarah..." The bride, guests and even Andrew himself burst into laughter as the moment played out. Thankfully, Rebecca understood and didn't hold it against him. "His ex-girlfriend's name is Sarah, [and] so is one of my middle names," she told Newsweek. "I understood he was nervous and slipped up." Rebecca and Andrew—who she affectionately calls "Andi"—met in their hometown village shop in Harlington. Their friendship grew online before it blossomed into romance. The two are a classic case of opposites attracting. "I'm a lot more outgoing and sociable," Rebecca said. "Andi is more introverted and sensible." Thankfully, Rebecca wasn't upset—just amused. "He didn't even realize he'd left 'Rebecca' out," she said. "I told him and he said, 'I'm so sorry, I was so nervous that I'd do something wrong.' We laughed about it." Simply captioned: "Oh dear," Rebecca posted the clip on TikTok (@scalesfeathersandfur), which has amassed over 34,000 views. Dozens of users reacted in the comments, jumping to Andrew's defense. "To be fair I think he just got HER names in the wrong order due to anxiety. He looks besotted with her. Congratulations," one user wrote. But some weren't as understanding, claiming they would "walk out" if it had happened to them. Many others referenced the iconic Friends episode where Ross says Rachel's name at the altar. "Ross and Rachael ... I mean Emily moment," one user laughed. The couple tied the knot on October 21, 2023, and the ceremony was otherwise smooth, aside from the unexpected name-drop. Nearly two years into marriage, the couple are enjoying their life together. "We are still very much happily married and live each others company," she said. It's Time for Millennials to Make Lindsay Lohan a Movie Star Again

I — like all millennials — root for no one more than I root for Lindsay Lohan. We were all there together, on the ground floor, as she perfected the 'switch' comedy; first as twins Annie and Hallie in Nancy Meyers' 'The Parent Trap' remake, then later with Jamie Lee Curtis' soul in the 'Freaky Friday' remake, and when she cosplayed as a cool kid in 'Mean Girls.' She grew up with us, and we stuck with her through the personal life rollercoaster. We got it, after all. We were all going through our own pitfalls — we just didn't have the paparazzi snapping shots of life's worst moments. Even those of us who bemoan straight-to-streaming releases supported her Netflix comedy comebacks. The platform should know, too, that we 100% would've been there, lined up at the movie theater, to support both films with generous box office returns. The millennial generation does not agree on everything. We are actually quite divided on other topics — like preferred boy bands, Ross on 'Friends,' superheroes, and Katy Perry's recent output — but we are in agreement about one thing: Lohan. More from IndieWire 'Highest 2 Lowest' Trailer: Spike Lee's Latest Joint Is an Entertaining Homage to Akira Kurosawa Amazon CEO 'Cannot Wait' to Start Denis Villeneuve's James Bond Movie 'Freakier Friday,' therefore, is the most important theatrical release for millennials this year. I heard — and I do accept — David Ehrlich's argument about 'The Naked Gun.' There is a reason, after all, that we at IndieWire have made sure you know about and are prepared to support that fantastic comedy at the cinema. But — hear me out — the 'Freaky Friday' sequel is a big deal. First of all, none other the Instagram queen herself, Jamie Lee Curtis, made sure that the movie was shot in Los Angeles. She told Deadline last month, 'The movie is a love letter to Los Angeles and the original movie was a love to Los Angeles. We shot in the original house and we shot all over the city of Los Angeles.' Therefore, in the day in age where productions often run to tax credits in other states and countries, 'Freakier Friday' is doing the work by keeping Hollywood alive. And they did that before this summer's big $750 million win in the California state legislature. The trailer has a glimpse of several beloved local locales, including my favorite vinyl shop, The Record Parlour. Secondly, while it is another sequel or reboot, it is a property that the fans willed into existence. For years and years and years fans hounded Curtis and Lohan about the potential for a continuation, and that hullabaloo spoke it into existence. And unlike Disney's 'Hocus Pocus 2,' this one actually is getting the chance to prove its performance in theaters. And thirdly, and most importantly, this press tour has given all us millennials the opportunity to bask in our girl Lohan. She, after all, most represents my generation now in this phase of her life. While those boomers and Gen Xers put us down for our incompetence and immaturity for the better part of a decade, now we millennials are the ones that have it all together. And we represent a more emphatic culture, I would like to think, that runs counter with much of what was ugly in the tabloid-laden '00s and what is ugly in today's divisive times. We are out here providing hope in the form of an intergenerational comedy like 'Freakier Friday' — I mean, literally bringing the generations together and swapping them all around. We just needed our time, as Lohan did. 'I was losing that feeling of excitement about doing a film, and I wanted to live my own life for a bit, figure out how to have a more private life, a real life,' she told The Times. 'I wanted to wait to get that itch again.' In the same interview, Lohan also offers hope to us IndieWire-loving, Letterboxd-using movie lovers, speaking to exactly what is missing in today's film landscape, 'I miss films that are stories, like 'All About Eve' or 'Breakfast at Tiffany's.' There are not many major movies I want to go and see that are like that — there's a gap and I'm craving to do work like that.' Next weekend — on August 8 to be exact — the put-upon millennial generation has the chance to prove our buying-power worth, supporting a movie that isn't just another piece of run-of-the-mill nostalgia bait, but the kind of midlevel-budget studio comedy with appealing stars we want to see. And in supporting Lohan — our most universal representative — we might actually, even if inadvertently, get the fun, original content for which we've been waiting. Go reserve your tickets now, kids.
