San Diego Comic-Con's ‘Aztec Batman' Trailer Explores Mythos, Culture, and Justice In a New Light
The film, also known as Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios, offers a new take on the Caped Crusader's storied mythos. According to HBO Max Latin America's press release, its story will center on 'a young Aztec boy named Yohualli Coatl, whose father, village leader Toltecatzin, is murdered by Spanish Conquistadors. Coatl flees to Tenochtitlan to warn King Moctezuma and his high priest, Yoka, of looming danger. Using the temple of Tzinacan, the bat god, as a lair, Yohualli trains with his mentor and assistant, Acatzin, developing equipment and weaponry to confront the Spaniard invasion, protect Moctezuma's temple, and avenge his father's death.'
Aztec Batman was first announced in 2022 in celebration of the DC hero's 83rd anniversary. The animated series is being created in collaboration with Warner Bros. Animation, Particular Crowd, Mexico's Anima, and Book of Life producer Chatrone. While the animated project has a lot of hands involved, it's being helmed by a familiar hand in Juan Meza-León, storyboard artist of the Harley Quinn Animated Series fame. Meza-León will co-write and direct the film.

The other of which is 2018's animated film, Batman Ninja. While Batman Ninja and its 2025 sequel, Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League, set the Caped Crusader in a modern-day setting, isekai adventures notwithstanding, Aztec Batman presents its version of the DC hero steeped in the period piece, where colonialism is intertwined with his vigilanteism while maintaining Batman's essence.
In an interview with Anime News Network, Meza-León elaborated on how their version of Batman, despite coming from a wealthy family, will face challenges from the class system that would have influenced a young boy in Aztec culture.
'He goes through tragedy at the hands of the conquistadors. So that's where you get the loss of the parents and also the loss of his village. That motivates him and pushes him into a journey that, unbeknownst to him, is being led by the deities that guide him into becoming the bat warrior,' Meza-León told Anime News Network. 'We try to be as faithful as we can to the essence of the characters, whether it's Batman, Joker, or Two-Face. They're completely new characters with different origins, but you can still see the spirit of their comic counterparts.'
Aside from the obvious cultural and historical influences, Aztec Batman producer García de Letona told Anime News Network that the movie was inspired by Batman: The Animated Series, Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, and a bunch of comic books. DC fans will no doubt have to keep their eyes peeled to spot easter eggs from.
Aztec Batman is slated to release digitally on September 19.

Marvel stayed at home, but that doesn't mean this year's Comic-Con was lacking in big announcements. Add to that the small matter of George Lucas in the hosue. Comic-Con remains a highlight of the geek calendar. SDCC encourages the big names from the worlds of movies, TV, and comic books to peddle their wares in front of an adoring crowd. Last year, for example, Marvel used the famous Hall H stage to announce that Robert Downey Jr. would be returning to the MCU — as the villainous Doctor Doom rather than Tony Stark. There were fewer fireworks in California this year with a more muted event. Marvel sat out entirely, while competitor DC mostly let its recently released Superman movie do the talking. But that's not to say that there weren't any big moments and notable announcements for fans to enjoy. Here's a round-up of the most important things that happened at Comic-Con over the weekend, from new trailers to appearances from pop culture legends. James Gunn finally unveiled Peacemaker season 2 There might have been a shortage of big superhero movie news out of Comic-Con this year, but that's not to say DC was completely quiet. James Gunn might have been busy kicking off a whole new superhero universe, but he still had time for John Cena's bizarre vigilante Peacemaker. The trailer for season two teases lots of silliness, as well as the tantalising idea of portals between dimensions — perhaps a nod to the very confusing DCU chronology since Gunn's takeover. "The reason I'm so happy to be here with you guys, is because this is the real fans here," he said on stage. Avengers: Doomsday might not have a finished script Marvel didn't have an actual presence in San Diego this year, but that didn't stop the upcoming team-up movie Avengers: Doomsday from grabbing some headlines. Rebecca Romijn — aka the original Mystique in the X-Men movies — was at Comic-Con promoting Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but she gave an intriguing answer when asked whether she had finished shooting her scenes for Doomsday. "[I'm] not quite sure. The script hasn't — they haven't finished writing it. It's been very, very fun, and we don't know yet. They keep everything very close to the vest themselves in an effort to keep everything under wraps," she said according to The Hollywood Reporter. Just over a year away from the release of Marvel's first Avengers movie since Endgame, the script apparently isn't complete. That could be a warning sign or just yet another symptom of Marvel's bizarre secrecy. The fact Romijn doesn't know of a finished script doesn't mean that there isn't one. George Lucas was in the house Until this year, George Lucas had never taken to the stage at Comic-Con. The Star Wars creator, however, broke his duck this year by sitting down with Guillermo del Toro for a panel discussing the new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. The museum will house lots of Star Wars pieces, as well as other art including early Flash Gordon drawings and paintings by Frida Kahlo. "I don't think it's anything that anybody else can tell you. If you have emotional connection, it's art. If you don't, just move onto the next painting." Star Wars fans also got a glimpse of Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger in the currently filming second season of Ahsoka. As for any concrete updates on that show, they were in short supply. Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is going much bigger Five Nights at Freddy's managed to parlay its video game success to the big screen in 2023, with the movie adaptation of the creepy game earning a massive $291m (£217m) worldwide. Returning director Emma Tammi unveiled a trailer and also promised that the new movie would feature 'more than three times as many animatronics' as its predecessor, praising the Jim Henson Company for realising the critters as practically as possible. Among those new animatronics will be Mangle and The Marionette, who will be very recognisable to fans of the games. Based on how many of those fans turned up to buy a ticket first time around, catering squarely to their tastes seems like a very smart move. Coyote vs. Acme saga gets a happy ending Two years ago, Warner Bros announced that it was chucking a completed movie in the bin. Coyote vs. Acme, which is a live-action and animation hybrid featuring Looney Tunes characters, was scrapped in favour of a tax write-off. After a fervent campaign online, though, the studio reversed course and allowed Ketchup Entertainment to nab the rights to the movie earlier this year. Read more: Will Forte debuts first 'Coyote vs. Acme' footage, calls initial Warner Bros. cancellation 'devastating' (Entertainment Weekly, 4 min read) At Comic-Con, Ketchup announced that the film will land in US cinemas on 28 August 2026 and also revealed that Bugs Bunny is in line for a cameo appearance. That's more than enough to whet the appetite of fans who have been following this long-running rollercoaster of a story. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds goes Jim Henson The Jim Henson Company got a major shout-out during the Five Nights at Freddy's panel, but that wasn't the only time the world of the Muppets graced Hall H this year. In a short preview clip for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, fans saw Anson Mount's character Captain Pike in the form of one of the Henson Company's puppets. That's set to be a memorable episode indeed. Predator franchise unveils Arnold Schwarzenegger cameo It's a big year for the Predator franchise, with animated movie Predator: Killer of Killers already streaming and live-action adventure Predator: Badlands on the way very soon. Dan Trachtenberg, who directed both projects, appeared at Comic-Con armed with the first 15 minutes of Badlands and a very interesting additional detail for Killer of Killers. 'Unfortunately, some bits of Killer of Killers were left on the cutting room floor, but recently we were able to sneak it back in," said Trachtenberg. He then played a changed version of the animated movie's epilogue, revealing Danny Glover's Lt. Mike Harrigan and Arnold Schwarzenegger's Dutch from the original 1987 Predator movie as warriors captured by the creatures this time around. Here's what to know about the sequel (Business Insider, 3 min read) Trachtenberg said of meeting Schwarzenegger to discuss the cameo: "We talked a lot about the things we could make together and he was very kind to approve his cameo in this. And we can now continue to cook up things that may be in store for that guy.' Spinal Tap II: The End Continues The comedic rockers of Spinal Tap are back, with Rob Reiner returning to direct a sequel to the classic 1980s mockumentary. Reiner appeared at Comic-Con to debut a packed trailer for the movie, which features A-list music biz cameos from Paul McCartney and Elton John. It's almost certainly the only trailer this year to feature a Beatle and a Taskmaster star, in Kerry Godliman. Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer all return to their famous roles in the sequel and Reiner, for his part, praised the celebs who popped up. 'I was surprised at how good Paul McCartney was at improv,' said the filmmaker.

Remembering Anne Burrell: New 'Worst Cooks' cohost Gabe Bertaccini says 'she really cared'
While watching a recent season of 'Worst Cooks in America,' chef Gabriele 'Gabe' Bertaccini made a note on his phone to talk to his agent about hosting one of Food Network's signature offerings. 'And then I forgot about it for, like, six months,' Bertaccini, co-host of the network's Tuscany-set 'Ciao House' tells USA TODAY. 'And then my agent calls me.' Bertaccini, 39, leaped at the chance to be a part of the 'iconic show with the iconic Anne Burrell.' Burrell, known for having no appetite for nonsense, a megawatt smile and coiffed platinum locks, has served as mentor for all but one of the show's 29 seasons. The series returns July 28 (9 ET/PT, streaming the next day on HBO Max). Burrell died June 17, and 'Worst Cooks in America: Talented and Terrible' will be Burrell's last season, and Bertaccini's first. Watching the upcoming season, Bertaccini felt 'very celebratory about it,' he says. 'I was like, 'I am so happy that this is Anne and it shows (her) so well because that's who she was. I'm sad that she's not here anymore, but I know that she would love to see herself in this season and she would really enjoy actually reliving all these crazy moments that we had together.' In the show, two chefs divide a group of struggling culinary hopefuls into opposing teams and sharpen their cooking skills through tips and tutorials so that a cook from their team can survive elimination and walk away with a sweet-as-pie cash prize of $25,000. This season's kitchen catastrophes comprises an array of performers, including a belly dancer, opera singer, professional roller skater and puppeteer. 'It was basically like having a kindergarten class in front of me and teaching,' Bertaccini says before quickly backtracking. 'They would have done better if they were kids. … These recruits really have no idea how to cook.' Bertaccini says Burrell warned him – ahead of the first cook when the participants freestyle and prepare a signature dish without coaching – that he would be shocked. He says she'd say: ''I just want to tell you, no matter how much you prepare yourself, this is going to be really bad. You're going to look and be speechless.'' And speechless he was. 'I remember having the producer telling me in my ear, like, 'Gabriele, can you say something?' I'm like, 'I'm just sitting here watching this train crash, and I don't have any feedback because I don't know where to start.'' And even though Bertaccini and Burrell battled, they became friends after 'spending 12 hours a day together for three weeks' on the set, he says. When Bertaccini caught a bad cold just before filming the finale, Burrell surprised him with a card and small crocheted heart. 'She loved to crochet, so she would sit down everywhere − at the bar, the restaurant, in a production meeting – and she would crochet and talk to you,' Bertaccini says. 'It was a way to relax and to focus. But what really struck me is that the night before she went home, and after a 14-hour shoot day, she made me a little heart. And she brought me a card saying, like: 'I hope you feel better. It was great shooting with you. I know this is the last day, good luck with the finale.'' 'And I think that it's really what I carry with me: the idea that she cared, not only about of course the show but about the people that work on the show, about the recruits. She really cared, and she always found time for everybody.'

I watched every new TV and movie trailer from SDCC 2025 — here's the 5 I'm most excited about
San Diego Comic-Con 2025 has officially wrapped, and with it came a flood of trailers, teasers, and first looks, some of which dropped during massive Hall H panels while others arrived quietly online throughout the weekend. From returning fan favorites to brand new adaptations, it's been a big few days for movie and TV reveals, and I've pulled together a roundup of the ones that were made publicly available during or alongside the event. I'd love to include the new 'Predator: Badlands' trailer and 'Alien: Earth' sneak peek in this list since they're among my most anticipated releases, but both actually dropped before the convention began. The official 'Badlands' trailer landed online just days ahead of its Hall H panel, and us 'Alien' fans were treated to a four-minute look earlier in the week. That said, both properties still had a presence at SDCC, with extended footage and episode screenings shown to those lucky enough to be in the room. Of all the trailers and reveals that dropped online during Comic-Con 2025, these are the five I'm most excited about (and don't worry, there's a full list below too). As a horror nerd, 'IT' is easily one of my favorite horror movies ever. So when I heard we were getting a prequel series, 'Welcome to Derry' was instantly added to my must-watch list. Set in 1962, the show dives into the sinister roots of Derry, Maine, exploring the eerie events that paved the way for Pennywise's origin story. Director Andy Muschietti, who helmed both movies, said he was 'exhausted but excited' after finishing them, and had always dreamt of telling the story of how the demonic clown came to be. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. The series pulls from historical horrors teased in King's novel and referenced in the movies, including the Black Spot juke joint fire, the Kitchener Ironworks explosion, and the Bradley Gang massacre. Bill Skarsgård reprises his iconic role, alongside Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, and James Remar. At SDCC, fans got to see the first ten minutes of the premiere episode. Muschietti teased: 'We got away with a lot, and that's the stuff you'll be excited about.' I'm absolutely ready for the creepy clown with the red balloon to haunt my dreams all over again. Starts streaming on HBO Max in October 2025 Another Stephen King story coming to life? I'm in. 'The Long Walk' has always been one of the more disturbing King concepts to me, so I'm glad it's finally getting the big screen treatment. Directed by Francis Lawrence, the movie adapts one of King's earliest and bleakest novels. Given his experience with the dystopian vibe of 'The Hunger Games,' I trust he'll handle this adaptation with the right amount of intensity. The story centers on fifty teenage boys forced into a brutal contest: they must keep up a pace of four miles per hour without slowing down. If a walker falls below that speed for more than 30 seconds, they get a warning, and three warnings means execution. Hall H got the new trailer and a sneak peek at a scene so graphic they had to black out parts mid-screening. The footage also showed more of Mark Hamill as the cold, authoritarian Major overseeing the event. The young cast, including Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, and Garrett Wareing, seem to be bringing some serious energy. Saying I'm excited is an understatement. The first 'Five Nights at Freddy's' movie unfortunately didn't win over critics, but it was a massive hit with fans (including me). It's exciting to see the story continue and for the franchise to get another shot at delivering that signature animatronic horror. Directed once again by Emma Tammi and written by game creator Scott Cawthon, 'Five Nights at Freddy's 2' picks up a year after the events of the first movie. The town has turned the terrifying events into a campy legend, hosting its first 'Fazfest.' But when young Abby (Piper Rubio) secretly returns to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza to reconnect with the animatronics, things go horribly wrong. The newly revealed trailer shows the return of Josh Hutcherson as Mike, Elizabeth Lail as Vanessa, and Matthew Lillard as William Afton in a prequel storyline. New additions include Freddy Carter, Wayne Knight, McKenna Grace, and Skeet Ulrich. Thankfully, this time around, we're diving deeper into the lore of the haunted animatronics (one of the biggest reasons the games are so beloved), including the introduction of more polished versions of the original crew, plus The Puppet. One thing I loved most about 'Gen V' is how it took the extremely wild vibe of 'The Boys' and mixed it with the chaos of college life. So safe to say I was definitely excited when season 2 got announced. The new trailer looks even crazier with more drama and twists than before. The story picks up after 'The Boys' season 4, following Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair), Emma Meyer (Lizze Broadway), and Jordan Li (London Thor and Derek Luh) as they return to Godolkin University, now led by the enigmatic Dean Cipher (Hamish Linklater). The trio struggles with past trauma while uncovering a sinister program called 'Project Odessa,' linked to the university's founder, Thomas Godolkin (Ethan Slater). Showrunner Michele Fazekas said the shows 'talk to each other,' with 'The Boys' season 4 setting up 'Gen V' season 2. Now that Homelander has taken over America, we get to see what that looks like for the country, the school, and the start of the resistance. Plus, we get some awesome cameos from the main 'Boys' cast, like Erin Moriarty's Starlight and Nathan Mitchell's Black Noir, which ties it all together nicely. Stream the first 3 episodes on Prime Video from September 17, 2025 As a longtime fan of Rick Riordan's books, seeing 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' finally get the faithful adaptation it deserves was a dream come true. We've had the movies before, but the series really captures the spirit, heart, and adventure of the original story. I've got high hopes that season 2 will do the same for The Sea of Monsters. This time, the story picks up a year after the first season, with Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell) returning to camp — only to find it under threat from Kronos's forces. To save it, and his friend Grover (Aryan Simhadri), Percy and his friends set off on a dangerous quest into the Sea of Monsters to retrieve the Golden Fleece. The new trailer teases even more mythological mayhem: chariot races, sea beasts, and the introduction of Percy's cyclops half-brother, Tyson (Daniel Diemer). With familiar faces like Scobell, Simhadri, and Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth back, and some exciting new additions to the cast, it looks like another epic chapter is on the way.
