Greylist exit in sight: SA braces for make-or-break Financial Action Task Force inspection

South Africa is set to take the final step toward exiting the Financial Action Task Force greylist, with an international assessment team scheduled to arrive in the country next week for an on-site evaluation.
The FATF Africa Joint Group will visit South Africa on July 29 and 30, 2025, to verify progress made in strengthening the country's anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing systems.
IOL previously reported that the country was placed on the greylist due to its failure to adhere to the FATF's requirements in dealing with anti-money laundering (AML) and combating financing of terrorism (CFT).
This visit is the final requirement before the FATF decides at its October plenary whether the country can be removed from the greylist. Since being greylisted in 2023, the country has worked hard to complete 22 action items required by the FATF
These include improving investigations and prosecutions of serious money laundering and terrorist financing cases, enhancing transparency around company ownership and enforcing stronger penalties for violations.
Earlier this year, the watchdog also confirmed South Africa had substantially completed the Action Plan, allowing the on-site visit to proceed.

'At its June 2025 Plenary, the FATF made the initial determination that South Africa has substantially completed its action plan and warrants an on-site assessment to verify that the implementation of AML/CFT reforms has begun and is being sustained, and that the necessary political commitment remains in place to sustain implementation in the future,' FATF said.
During a media briefing last week, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni spoke about the upcoming FATF inspection, saying it was important for the country to be removed from the list and expressed hope that South Africans would behave.
"The FATF inspection date, they are coming on the 29th and 30th of July 2025, so I hope South Africans will behave, the visitors will be here, we need to get out of the greylisting, it's important for all of us that we," Ntshavheni said.

Gondwana game reserve boss killed in elephant incident
CEO and co-owner of the Gondwana Private Game Reserve, FC Conradie (39), tragically lost his life after being trampled by an elephant on the morning of Tuesday, July 22. Image: Facebook GONDWANA Private Game Reserve chief executive and co-owner FC Conradie's passing after being trampled by an elephant has been described as a huge loss to the hospitality industry and conservation community. Emergency services were summoned to the scene at the reserve located about 30km outside Mossel Bay on Tuesday. 'On arrival the members found the man, employed at the business, with multiple injuries. He was later declared dead by paramedics on scene. The elephant was already moved away from the camp on arrival. 'Circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation,' said police spokesperson Christopher Spies. A statement by the game reserve described Conradie as a 'devoted husband, father of three young children, and a cherished friend to many'. 'FC was a beloved and highly respected figure, both within Gondwana and across the broader conservation community. Son believes mother was suffocated in Hanover Park burglary

He highlighted that she had been a beloved member of the community for over 40 years. Michael Douman, the son of Mary Douman told Cape Argus their family was reeling in shock after her body was discovered inside her bedroom on Wednesday just after 8am. She had been found with her face on a pillow and various items such as a Mountain Bike, cash and jewelry were missing. (Michael) Douman, who works as a security guard, had been on nightshift and returned home the next day and found his mother's body. It was first believed that a suspect had been detained after video footage was obtained. But police confirmed there were no arrests in the case Police spokesperson, Captain FC Van Wyk said: 'Kindly be advised that the matter you are referring to is still under investigation. 'She was a wonderful and strong woman. 'I am in my fifties and she still wanted to take care of me as a mother, that was the type of person that she was. 'She was a very healthy person also and she would help other residents who had illness or sickness.' 'I think that they must have smothered her using the pillow,' he explained. 'We are however waiting for the police to give us more information. 'They had the time to take everything, they did not care what they did and who they kicked to feed their selfish ways. 'They took a 2016 Mongoose Mountain bike and a folding bike, watches and R6000 in cash.' Earlier Cape Argus reported that residents rallied together stating they would hunt down her killers, by searching premises in the community for the bikes which would lead them to the suspect/s. Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said cases of murder and house robbery were opened for investigation.
