LONDON: UK police arrested over 100 people in London and other cities for supporting Palestine Action in a third consecutive weekend of protests over the government's decision to ban the activist group using anti-terror laws. Some 55 people were held at a demonstration in London's Parliament Square under the Terrorism Act 2000 for displaying signs supporting Palestine Action, the Metropolitan Police said. The protesters held up placards reading: 'I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.'
Another nine were detained at a separate London march, and a further eight were held in Truro in Cornwall. Other protests were held in northwestern Manchester where 16 people were detained, in western Bristol where another 17 were arrested, and in the Scottish capital Edinburgh, police said.
The rallies were organized by campaign group Defend Our Juries, which had said they were intended to 'defy' the ban. Since the Palestine Action ban kicked in on July 5, police have warned that expressing support for the group was now a crime, after a last-ditch High Court challenge failed to stop its proscription becoming law. The government announced plans for the ban under the 2000 Terrorism Act days after activists from the group claimed to be behind a break-in at an air force base in southern England. Two aircraft there were sprayed with red paint, causing an estimated £7 million ($9.55 million) in damage. Four people charged in relation to the incident remain in custody. Palestine Action has condemned its outlawing—which makes it a criminal offence to belong to or support the group, punishable by up to 14 years in prison—as an attack on free speech.—AFP

UN rights chief concerned over UK designation of (Palestine Action) as "terrorist" group

GENEVA, July 25 (KUNA) -- UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk on Friday raised serious concerns over the UK Government's decision to proscribe "Palestine Action" protest group as a terrorist organization. In a press statement issued from Geneva, Turk warned "counter-terrorism laws are being applied to conduct that is not terrorist in nature and risks hindering the legitimate exercise of fundamental freedoms across the UK." He noted that the UK Government's decision which came into effect on 5 July makes it a criminal offence to be a member of (Palestine Action) to express support for the group or even to wear clothing that may raise "reasonable suspicion" of affiliation or support offences punishable by up to 14 years in prison. Turk noted "UK domestic counter-terrorism legislation defines terrorist acts broadly to include 'serious damage to property'. But according to international standards, terrorist acts should be confined to criminal acts intended to cause death or serious injury or to the taking of hostages for purpose of intimidating a population or to compel a government to take a certain action or not". He added that "the decision appears disproportionate and unnecessary. It limits the rights of many people involved with and supportive of Palestine Action who have not themselves engaged in any underlying criminal activity but rather exercised their rights to freedom of expression peaceful assembly and association. As such it appears to constitute an impermissible restriction on those rights that is at odds with the UK's obligations under international human rights law." Turk stressed that the conflation of protected expression with acts of terrorism could have a chilling effect on the legitimate exercise of those rights. He also pointed out that since the ban entered into force on 5 July at least 200 individuals have been arrested under the UK Terrorism Act 2000 many of them during peaceful protests. The high commissioner called on the UK Government to rescind the proscription of Palestine Action and to halt legal proceedings against those arrested under its provisions. He also urged a comprehensive review of UK counter-terrorism legislation to ensure alignment with international human rights norms. According to the statement, the UK Government added Palestine Action to its list of proscribed groups under the Terrorism Act 2000 following an incident in June in which members reportedly broke into a military airfield and spray-painted two aircraft as well as other incidents involving property damage. UK PM under pressure to immediately recognise Palestinian statehood

LONDON, July 25 (KUNA) -- British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing pressure to immediately recognise Palestinian statehood after France made a commitment to do so within months and a group of about 125 MPs called on the prime minister to do the same. Labour and Lib Dem MPs on the foreign affairs committee argued that statehood is an "inalienable right" that should "not be made conditional". But their two Tory colleagues said it should only happen as part of a long-term political solution to the conflict in the Middle East, echoing the Labour government's position. Sir Keir is due to hold an emergency call with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz later today, amid warnings of mass starvation in Gaza. In a statement on Thursday evening, condemning "unspeakable and indefensible" conditions in Gaza, Sir Keir said statehood was an "inalienable right". He reiterated his call for a ceasefire in the conflict, adding this would "put us on a path" towards recognising a Palestinian state. He has previously said the UK should reserve recognition for when it would have the "greatest impact" - without specifying when this would be. Most countries - about 139 in all - formally recognise a Palestinian state, although many European nations and the United States say they will only do so as part of moves towards a long-term resolution to the conflict. Spain, Ireland and Norway formally took the step last year, hoping to exert diplomatic pressure to secure a ceasefire in Gaza. (end)
