Eight Coimbatore Corporation school students clear NEET with free coaching
Eight students of schools run by the Coimbatore Corporation have cleared the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2025 through a free coaching programme organised by the civic body from last October.
Of the 158 students from Classes XI and XII (2023–24 academic year) who received the training, 43 appeared for the examination and eight cleared it. Two of them had taken the test for the second time.
Coaching classes were held twice a week. Class XII students completed their training in May 2025, while Class XI students will continue into the next academic year.
The Corporation had spent ₹5 lakh for the programme, which covered food and transportation costs for students attending the sessions.
'The NEET syllabus differed significantly from our school curriculum, and the coaching played a crucial role in helping us adapt. I have applied for counselling, and if I am not allotted an MBBS seat this time, I intend to attempt the exam again,' said K. Sadhana, a student of Corporation Higher Secondary School, North Coimbatore.
Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran said, 'Since this is the first year of the programme, we did not expect major results. Students who started early, especially those in Class XI, are likely to perform better next year. We will commence the next round of coaching later this month and expect around 200 students to enrol. From this year, the coaching will follow a purpose-driven model to help students improve their scores,' he said.

Tamil Nadu government rejects Coimbatore Corporation's proposal for 20 MW solar plant at Vellalore dump yard
The Tamil Nadu government has rejected a proposal by the Coimbatore Corporation to set up a 20 MW solar power generation unit on 50 acres at the Vellalore dump yard. According to the Corporation, it spends nearly ₹10 crore each month on electricity charges as it has over 50,000 streetlights and several water supply and sewage treatment facilities under its jurisdiction. The Corporation currently operates three solar power plants: a 3.6 MW plant at Pullukadu established under the Smart Cities Mission at ₹17 crore, and two 1 MW plants at Ukkadam and Kavundampalayam, built at a combined cost of ₹5.5 crore. Power generated from these facilities is adjusted against the Corporation's electricity usage. The first phase of biomining at Vellalore, completed in 2023 at ₹60 crore, resulted in the reclamation of 54 acres. The Corporation planned to establish a 20 MW solar power plant on this site and submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the State government last year. Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran told The Hindu that the ₹150 crore project was to be funded through municipal bonds. The proposal, however, did not receive clearance from the State Finance Department. The Commissioner added that the Corporation has submitted a revised proposal under a Union government scheme, with an estimated cost of ₹120 crore. 'This was an effort to put the site to productive use, rather than allowing it to return to being a dumping ground. We have begun planting trees on a 10-acre portion of the dump yard, and we hope the project receives approval,' he said.

Salem Corporation to plant 55,000 saplings on 55 acres in Panamarathupatti Lake
The Salem Corporation is clearing bushes on 55 acres in Panamarathupatti Lake and will plant 55,000 saplings and seek ₹25 crore as special assistance from the Union government under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investments (SASCI) scheme to redevelop the lake into a tourist spot. Built by the British in 1911 at ₹9.68 lakh, the 2,137 acre-Panamarathupatti Lake was once the main source of drinking water for Salem Corporation. When there was heavy rain in Jarugumalai, the rainwater passed through Varattaru and Kottaru to reach Panamarathupatti Lake. However, the water body stopped receiving water 25 years ago due to encroachments on the path and due to several other reasons. Salem Corporation tried to rejuvenate the lake and make it a major tourist destination, but could not do so due to fund issues. The civic body sent a proposal to the State government last year to develop the lake as a tourist spot at ₹230 crore, which is still pending. Meanwhile, the Corporation decided to plant saplings at ₹10 lakh on 55 acres to convert the lake into a tourist spot. Salem Corporation officials said the clearing work and planting of saplings would be completed in a month and a project proposal would be sent to the Union government. If the government accepted the plan of creating greenery on the 55 acres, Salem Corporation would get ₹25 crore in assistance, and using those funds, it would redevelop the lake into a tourist spot, the officials added.

AITUC urges Erode Corporation to implement revised minimum wages for SHGs and contract workers
The Erode District Local Bodies Workers' Association, affiliated with the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), has urged the Corporation to implement the revised minimum wages for self-help group (SHG) and contract workers employed in various civic departments. In a representation to Corporation Commissioner Arpit Jain, association president S. Chinnasamy cited government orders and court rulings, including the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, and a Madras High Court directive mandating minimum wage payments to all local body workers. The association noted that over 1,500 daily wage workers are engaged under SHGs and contract roles across services such as sanitation, water supply, and street light maintenance. Despite multiple appeals, the revised minimum wages for 2024–2025 have not been implemented, it said. Mr. Chinnasamy stated that for April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025, the prescribed daily wages was ₹754 for sanitation workers, water supply staff, and domestic breeding checkers (DBC), and ₹792 for drivers, as per official communications from the Tamil Nadu Labour Department and the Erode District Collector. For 2025–2026, effective April 1, the updated daily wages should be ₹761 for sanitation, water supply, and DBC staff, and ₹799 for drivers, based on a March 3, 2025, Labour Department letter. However, the Corporation continues to pay only ₹724 per day, the 2023–2024 rate, resulting in a wage loss of at least ₹37 per worker per day. Calling the non-compliance both unlawful and in contempt of court, the association demanded immediate payment of arrears along with the June 2025 salary. It also urged the Corporation to extend Employees' State Insurance coverage to all temporary workers, issue ID cards through the Sanitation Workers Welfare Board, ensure access to welfare benefits, and supply safety gear and tools. The representation warned that failure to act amounts to denying basic legal entitlements to some of the Corporation's most essential and underpaid workers.
