Arsenal sign Spanish keeper Kepa from Chelsea

ARSENAL have signed Spaniard Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea, the Premier League side said on Tuesday, with media reporting that the club triggered a five million pounds (US$6.86 million) release clause to buy the world's most expensive goalkeeper.
Kepa, 30, joined Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao in 2018 for €71 million, but after winning the Europa League in 2019, the Champions League two years later, and the Club World Cup in 2022, the keeper has spent the last two seasons on loan.
Last season, Kepa was Bournemouth's regular goalkeeper in the Premier League and in the previous campaign he made 20 appearances for Real Madrid, helping the Spanish club win LaLiga and the Champions League.
Before joining Bournemouth last August, Kepa extended his Chelsea contract until 2026, and has signed a three-year deal with Arsenal, British media reports said, where he will wear the number 13 shirt and provide backup for David Raya. — REUTERS

Madison Keys, Aryna Sabalenka avoid upsets at Wimbledon

SIXTH-SEEDED Madison Keys recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win over Olga Danilovic on Wednesday to advance to the third round at Wimbledon. After outlasting Elena-Gabriela Ruse in a grueling, three-set match in sweltering conditions on Monday, Keys needed just 75 minutes to dismiss her Serbian foe. "I definitely felt a little bit more comfortable today – it's the cloudy, rainy England that we know and love, so that helped a lot ... felt a little bit more normal out here today," Keys said during her on-court interview. Keys, who won the Australian Open earlier this year, fired three aces, had 19 winners and overcame seven double faults to emerge victorious. "I knew that I wanted to get the momentum as early as I could and try to keep it," Keys said. "I knew that she could play really great tennis, so just wanted to get a lead and then run with it." Keys set up a third-round match with Germany's Laura Siegemund, who posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over No. 29 seed Leylah Fernandez of Canada. Top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka battled through a tough first set to record a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over Czech Marie Bouzkova. The Belarus native notched five aces and had 41 winners against only 18 unforced errors. Sabalenka was pleased to be advancing in the tournament and avoid the fate of second-seeded Coco Gauff, third-seeded Jessica Pegula and fifth-seeded Qinwen Zheng of China. The latter three players have been eliminated from the tournament. "Honestly, it's very sad to see so many top players losing in the first round, but you're better off focusing on yourself and staying away from the results," Sabalenka said in her on-court interview. She then lightened the mood with a joke. "I hope there are no more upsets in this tournament," the top-seeded player said. Sabalenka, who is bidding for her first Wimbledon title, will face the winner of Wednesday's match between 2023 champion Marketa Vondrousova, a Czech, and local favorite Emma Raducanu. Also Wednesday, Spaniard Cristina Bucsa coasted to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over No. 22 seed Donna Vekic of Croatia. Sonay Kartal of Great Britain also topped Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova in straight sets. — REUTERS

Soccer-Spain coach Tome upbeat about Bonmati's fitness

Soccer Football - Women's Champions League - Final - Arsenal v FC Barcelona - Estadio Jose Alvalade, Lisbon, Portugal - May 24, 2025 FC Barcelona's Aitana Bonmati looks dejected after the match REUTERS/Pedro Nunes TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY (Reuters) -Spain coach Montse Tome said Aitana Bonmati's recovery was progressing positively but stressed that health remains the priority, as the world champions prepare to face Portugal in their women's European Championship opener on Thursday. Bonmati, the Ballon d'Or winner for the past two years, rejoined the squad on Monday after being discharged from hospital following a bout of viral meningitis. "You saw a bit of the training, I think about 15 minutes, but she was working completely separately, and her progress is very positive," Tome told a press conference on Wednesday. 'As for today's training, she will already be able to do some exercises with the team. She's so eager — we have to hold her back a bit — but according to the medical staff, her progress is positive. Health comes first, and she's been able to complete all the tasks required." Barcelona midfielder Bonmati missed Spain's 3-1 win over Japan last week, casting doubt over her availability for Thursday's Group B clash in Zurich. Midfielder Patricia Guijarro said Bonmati's return had lifted the team's spirits. "She's euphoric, happy, and of course, we'll see her tomorrow and give her a big hug. Above all, she's happy to be here," Guijarro said. Spain, who won their first World Cup title last year, are among the favourites at Euro 2025. Bonmati has scored 30 goals in 78 appearances for Spain, and was a key player in their 2023 World Cup victory. (Writing by Julien Pretot in Miami; Editing by Ed Osmond)

Chelsea sign Brazil striker Joao Pedro from Brighton

LONDON: Chelsea signed Brazil striker Joao Pedro from Brighton in a deal worth a reported £60 million (RM344 million) today. Pedro jetted to the United States, where Chelsea are playing in the Club World Cup, on Sunday after the terms of his eight-year contract were agreed. With the transfer now confirmed following a medical, Pedro is available to play for Enzo Maresca's side in their Club World Cup quarter-final against Palmeiras in Philadelphia. Fifa has given clubs involved in the Club World Cup knockout phase until July 3 to register new players for the tournament. "Everyone knows this is a big club with a great history," Pedro said. "They had brilliant players in the past and have brilliant players now, so I am excited to join and you know when you are a Chelsea player you must think one thing - win." Pedro, who joined Brighton for £30 million from Watford two years ago, scored 30 goals in 70 appearances for the Seagulls and has been capped three times by Brazil. The 23-year-old missed Brighton's final two matches of the season after being dropped due to a training ground altercation with team-mate Jan Paul van Hecke. Pedro is the fourth player Chelsea have signed from Brighton in recent years after Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella and Robert Sanchez. Chelsea, who qualified for next season's Champions League, have already splashed out on striker Liam Delap, midfielder Dario Essugo and defender Mamadou Sarr since the end of last term. Brazilian rising star Estevao Willian, 18, will join the Blues after his Club World Cup campaign with Palmeiras. Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens could also be a Chelsea player soon after a deal worth up to a reported €65 million (RM323 million) was agreed for the 20-year-old on Saturday. - AFP
