Austin FC sign D Riley Thomas to MLS deal
April 11 - Austin FC on Friday signed defender Riley Thomas through the end of 2025 with options for 2026 and 2027.
Thomas, 23, also has a loan deal with MLS NEXT Pro side Austin FC II and remains eligible for matches there.
"I'm happy to sign an MLS contract with Austin FC," he said. "I already feel as though I have grown a lot as a player in the short time since I joined the Club and I'm grateful for all the support I've been given by the coaches, staff, and my teammates."
Thomas has been on Austin's bench for the past four MLS matches on a series of short-term agreements.
Austin selected Thomas in the second round (42nd overall) in December's MLS SuperDraft out of North Carolina.

The 42-year-old began his playing career at Swansea before joining the Ospreys when the game went regional in 2003. After making 188 appearances for the Ospreys, which included 14 tries, he joined Worcester Warriors in 2013 before retiring in 2015 after getting diagnosed with epilepsy. Thomas has coached at the highest level with Bristol Bears (defence) and Worcester where he was head coach. Article continues below He was also part of Warren Gatland's backroom team with Wales, helping his country reach the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup in 2023 before departing in the December of that year. Thomas has now taken the helm at Swansea and will be tasked with reinvigorating the famous Welsh club who finished bottom of the SRC table last season. WRU postpone revamp of women's game The Welsh Rugby Union has put the brakes on the proposed revamp of the professional women's game in Wales, according to the BBC. Celtic Challenge teams Gwalia Lightning and Brython Thunder were to be replaced by new teams but this has been postponed. The WRU had initially asked the four professional clubs - Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets - along with certain universities to bid to form new women's teams. But the BBC report they have seen an internal email between senior WRU officials who have paused the process due to "the ongoing transformation in the men's game." The WRU recently gave two-year notice to the Ospreys and Scarlets who refused to sign the new Professional Rugby Agreement (PRA) due to concerns the governing body had plans to turn Cardiff into a "super region" after it had acquired the capital city club. As it stands there is the very real possibility the WRU could go down to three, if not two, professional men's teams. According to the BBC an email from the WRU's head of women's rugby, Belinda Moore, said: "We have made the decision that Brython Thunder and Gwalia Lightning will continue to represent Wales in the flagship tournament next season. "We have taken this in the best interest of our players and management teams and believe this is the right way to guarantee a professional elite sporting environment for our players in the necessary timeframe. "It remains central to the WRU's strategy to grow marketable and commercially viable high-performance clubs for our women players in Wales and we will revisit this in the near future. "I would like to thank all parties for the work they have done to date during the tender process, it is not wasted, and we look forward to picking this up again in earnest at the appropriate time." Losing 'exceptional' Williams would be a huge blow for Lions, says former England wing Former British & Irish Lions wing Ugo Monye labelled Tomos Williams' performance as 'exceptional' in the 54-7 victory over the Western Force in Perth. The 30-year-old was outstanding and scored two tries for the Lions before getting forced off the field with a hamstring injury. Olivier Giroud 'set to return to Europe at 38' - as LAFC confirm the former Chelsea and Arsenal striker's exit
Olivier Giroud has departed LAFC and reached an agreement to return to Europe, according to reports. The Frenchman has made 37 appearances and scored five goals for the MLS outfit since joining from AC Milan last summer. But after just over a year in Los Angeles, Giroud's final match with the club will be on Sunday, June 29, when the Black and Gold host Vancouver Whitecaps. At 38 years old, Giroud still seems keen to play at the highest level and has agreed a one-year contract proposal from Lille, as per Fabrizio Romano. It is understood that the former Arsenal and Chelsea striker has booked his medical with the Ligue 1 side, and will return to his home nation as the sun sets on his career. With LAFC, he added another piece of silverware to his cabinet, winning the U.S Open Cup in 2024. Giroud will return to France, where he began his career playing in Grenoble's youth academy before finally signing his first professional contract at the age of 21. He then endured a loan spell at Istres before permanently moving to Tours, where he enjoyed a standout stint. With 21 goals in the 2009–10 season, Giroud became Ligue 2 top scorer. His rise continued at Montpellier, helping the club win its first-ever Ligue 1 title in 2011–12 by scoring a league-best 21 goals. This earned him a move to Arsenal in 2012, where he scored 105 goals in 253 appearances, winning three FA Cups along the way. In January 2018, Giroud joined Chelsea, where he contributed 39 goals in 119 games, enjoying success in the FA Cup, Europa League, and, of course, the Champions League, which Chelsea won in 2021. Giroud then moved to AC Milan in 2021, helping them clinch their first Serie A title in 11 years by scoring 11 league goals in his debut season. Across three seasons in Italy, he netted 49 times in 132 matches.
