Balochistan train services restored as Jaffar Express departs Peshawar
Train services in Balochistan have been restored following a 16-day hiatus due to a terrorist attack on the Jaffar Express. The train departed from Peshawar Cantt Railway Station, marking a significant return to operation.
Federal Minister Amir Muqam was present to bid farewell to the passengers, offering prayers for their safe journey. The Jaffar Express is carrying 280 passengers, including 28 who are traveling directly from Peshawar to Quetta.
It is scheduled to complete its 34-hour journey, arriving in Quetta by 5 PM the following day.
The train has been adorned with the national flag, vibrant banners, and balloons, highlighting its significance. It will travel through Punjab and Sindh before entering Balochistan, making it the only train that connects all four provinces.
At the time of the train's departure, Minister Amir Muqam stated to the media that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif wished for the resumption of the Jaffar Express service to Quetta, and now the train has officially set off from Peshawar.
He further mentioned that the terrorists' intentions would fail and that the process of development in Pakistan and Balochistan would continue. The minister expressed happiness that the Jaffar Express was back in service, symbolising the country's progress.
The minister reaffirmed the resolve of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa populace against terrorism, emphasising that the struggle against this threat is ongoing and collective. He also noted that security measures for all train services have been significantly enhanced.
Amir Muqam criticized the opposition parties' movements, stating that the aim of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) movements is not the development of the country and province but to seize control of Islamabad.
He remarked that the leadership of PTI is unstable and that there is no continuity in their policies. In conclusion, Amir Muqam decided that the process for the return of illegal Afghan refugees is certain and will be implemented according to the circumstances.
Moreover, the railway authorities in Quetta decided to send passenger coaches and locomotives damaged in the attack to Lahore for repair.
To accommodate passengers during Eid, a special train will leave Quetta on March 29, and a 20% discount will be offered on tickets for Eid days.
Additionally, Bolan Express, which previously ran twice a week, will now operate daily to enhance railway connectivity in the province. The number of passenger trains in Balochistan is also being increased from three to nine to improve travel facilities.

Thousands of local residents participated in Aman Pasawon in Dir Lower district on Sunday and protested against the deteriorating law and order situation in the region. It may be recalled that on Friday, thousands of people, including tribal elders from across North Waziristan, political alliances, and representatives of the business community participated in the grand Jirga. Speaking to the media, Utmanzai Jirga spokesperson Mufti Baitullah said the Jirga, in consultation with political and business leaders, unanimously decided that no further displacement or military operations will be allowed in the region. "Military operations are not a solution," he stated, adding that previous offensives including Zarb-e-Azb failed to deliver lasting peace. He said progress has been made on several fronts in discussions with the government, including agreements on reopening the Pak-Afghan Ghulam Khan border for trade, relaxation of the curfew, and permission for non-custom paid (NCP) vehicles in the area. Mufti Baitullah expressed hope for continued positive developments in the talks with the government and reassured residents that efforts for peace and stability are ongoing. Dr Gul Alam, another participant, told the media that ensuring security and peace is the primary duty of the state. "Around the world, the foremost obligation of any government is to provide protection and peace to its citizens," he said. The Jirga also demanded the immediate release of Malik Akbar Khan, who has been in custody for the past eight months. The elders believe his release is crucial for restoring trust between the government and the local community. The Utmanzai Jirga announced that the next Aman Pasoon will be held in the Datta Khel tehsil of North Waziristan, where residents have been under curfew for the past eleven days. The Jirga urged the government to ease the restrictions and resolve all issues through dialogue and mutual consultation.

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi held a crucial meeting with his Afghan counterpart, Sirajuddin Haqqani, during a one-day official visit to Kabul on Saturday. The two leaders discussed a range of pressing issues, including enhancing counter-terrorism efforts, preventing cross-border infiltration and the threat posed by the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Upon his arrival at the Afghan Ministry of Interior, Naqvi was warmly welcomed by Haqqani. The two ministers engaged in comprehensive discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties. They also addressed the challenges of drug trafficking, illegal movement across the border, and the repatriation of Afghan nationals residing illegally in Pakistan. Pakistan, Afghanistan vow to strengthen security, address cross-border concerns The meeting was attended by Afghanistan's Senior Deputy Minister of Interior Ibrahim Sardar, Pakistan's Special Representative for Afghanistan Mohammad Sadiq, Federal Interior Secretary Khurram Agha, and senior officials from both countries' interior ministries. Earlier in the day, Minister Naqvi was received at Kabul International Airport by Afghan Deputy Interior Minister Mohammad Nabi Omari and other senior Afghan officials. Naqvi's visit comes days after Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar's Kabul visit, as Pakistan is striving to deepen strategic and security cooperation with international partners.
