LEGENDARY flat trainer Kevin Prendergast, who won multiple Classics in Britain and Ireland, has died aged 92.
He took out his licence in 1963 and saddled his final runner at Cork last week, when Glory To Be finished second.

Tributes have poured in for Prendergast, who spent his career in County Kildare and died two weeks short of his 93rd birthday.
Among them was top Irish jockey Chris Hayes, who was stable jockey to Prendergast and rode most of his big winners in recent years including Awtaad, who won the Irish 2,000 Guineas in 2016.
He said: "La Collina was my first Group 1 winner for Kevin, but Awtaad was the first horse that was mine - I inherited La Collina from Declan McDonogh.
"Obviously there were also some great days with Madhmoon who came after Awtaad. But Awtaad's Guineas was phenomenal.
"It was the old Curragh and the cheer we got on the way in, I haven't heard one like it since.
"I've been around a while and I never heard a cheer like that before that either and that cheer was all for Kevin and solely Kevin. People say it was for us, but it wasn't, it was for Kevin.
"He's a legend around Kildare and a legend in the racing game and people were 10 deep around the winner's enclosure desperate to congratulate him.
"When I got the news this morning I couldn't help but look back through some pictures from that day in the car. We had some phenomenal times together and today is a sad day."

Another legendary trainer Dermot Weld, who was great friends with Prendergast, said: "He was a wonderful trainer. His horses were always turned out in supreme condition - you could always identify one of his by the way they were turned out and, even in the early days, they always won the best-turned-out award.
"He was an exceptional trainer of a two-year-old and had great longevity - and he trained a much smaller team of horses than is fashionable nowadays.
"He was a very, very talented trainer and naturally my sympathy goes out to his family."
Born in Australia on July 5, 1932, Prendergast was educated in Ireland but kicked off his racing career back in the southern hemisphere, where he was head lad to top trainer Frank Dalton.
He held that position for three years before returning home to establish himself as a leading amateur rider while serving as assistant trainer to his father.
After five years, Prendergast decided to strike out on his own in 1963 - and he did not have to wait long for his inaugural success, saddling Zara to win at Phoenix Park in May that year.
Pidget was the first to claim Classic gold for him in the 1972 Irish 1,000 Guineas, before going on to add the Irish St Leger to her tally later on that year.
After that Prendergast sent out the likes of Conor Pass (1973) and Oscar Schindler (1996 and 1997) to win two more Irish Legers, while Arctique Royal gave him another 1,000 win and Northern Treasure gave him a first Irish 2,000 Guineas in 1976.
Add into the mix top-drawer juveniles La Collina, Miss Beatrix, Termagant and Kingsfort and you get a feel for the kind of longevity Prendergast enjoyed.
One of the most consistent trainers in the Irish ranks, Prendergast sent out his 2,000th career winner in 2010.
As well as Hayes, the likes of Gary Halpin and Declan McDonogh also rode for Prendergast, demonstrating that he was not just an exceptional instructor of horses.
The great Kieren Fallon began his riding career with Prendergast, serving as apprentice from 1982 to 1987 before moving on and eventually becoming a six-times champion jockey.

‘I believe it's close' – Sligo Rovers boss claims ‘talk in the background' for starlet Owen Elding to play for Ireland

Elding's worldie — his eighth strike of the season — was similar to a cracker he scored against champions Shelbourne at Tolka Park last month. And while manager Russell believes he is eligible to play for Read More on League of Ireland The Bit O'Red chief said: 'What a strike from Owen Elding. He's an incredible talent. And it's becoming a habit now. 'His technique is off the charts and he's been honing that for the last couple of years. 'He works hard, he stays after training and practises. And it's no coincidence that when the lights come on on a Friday, Saturday night, he's producing the goods. 'It's becoming a habit of him picking up the ball in those areas, driving forward and he's just setting himself up. An incredible goal.' Most read in Football While Elding extended his contract at Sligo until the end of the 2027 season in February, interest in him is rising. Russell said: 'I would have felt Owen had a big season ahead of him. Cork City fans watch League of Ireland clash against Dundalk in cinema 'And I spoke to the club and said, 'We need to tie him down'. And thankfully we have. 'There's no buyout clause or any of this stuff. 'So it's important as a club that we move forward and get proper fees for our talents if we are developing them. 'And I think whoever does eventually prise Owen away from the club, it'll be a hell of a fee. 'Obviously the window opens on July 1. There's a lot of clubs interested. 'I'm sure there was a lot there on Friday night. When a 19-year-old kid is doing what he's doing, there's always going to be bids coming in. 'So we'll just have to wait and see. 'He's a real talisman for a kid so young. And I love his mentality. 'As a manager, I don't want to be losing him. He's doing unbelievably this year. 'I think for his own development, having a full season is good for him. 'He's playing, he's confident, he's enjoying his football . 'It's all about playing now and for me he's got to be up for Young Player of the Year. 'I'd love to see him standing at the end of the season in Team of the Year, Young Player of the Year and getting the recognition for the talent that he has and also pulling us out of the position that we're in.' GREEN SHOOTS Russell insists Elding is eligible to play for Jim Crawford's Young Boys in Green, saying: 'Yes, he is.' But the boss does not know why he has not been approached. Russell said: 'That's a good question, which you should ask the FAI. 'I would have flagged this a while back. 'I think there is stuff going on in the background trying to get him nationalised. 'He has been in the country since he was 11 years of age. 'He was born in 'There is talk in the background and hopefully it can be resolved as he should be in that Under-21 squad. 'I think it's paperwork that the FAI have to organise. 'I'm led to believe it's close, so I think for everyone it would be good if it happened soon.'

Nick Timoney: It feels like a long time since my last cap

Nick Timoney is a persistent man. A month shy of his 30th birthday, the Ulster back row could be held up as a poster boy for Ireland's embarrassment of riches at flanker and number 8. It's four years since the Dublin native made his Ireland debut, scoring a try in the 2021 summer hammering of USA, getting his opportunity while others were away on British and Irish Lions duty in South Africa. That was his first taste of the Ireland squad, and the versatile back row has consistently been part of Andy Farrell's wider plans since. He's been part of the extended squad in 10 of the last 11 Six Nations, Autumn Nations Series and summer tour groups, with the World Cup preparation squad in 2023 the only time he hasn't been selected or later added to the panel. With 16 Ireland internationals away on Lions again this summer, he's one of the experienced members of this squad - in a sense. Part of the furniture in the squad as a whole, but the durability and form of Caelan Doris, Josh van der Flier, Jack Conan and Peter O'Mahony has seen Timoney win just three caps in the last four years, with his debut against USA followed by a cap off the bench against Argentina a few months later, while he scored two tries on his most recent appearance against Fiji in November 2022. "Yeah, it feels like a long time ago. It pretty much is a long time ago now," the Ulster back row says, when he looks back on his last cap, just under three years ago. "Opportunities don't come easy in this squad because of how competitive it is and certainly feels like back row is always incredibly competitive." He's not the only one who has had to sit and wait patiently for their chance in this Irish back row. Gavin Coombes also made his debut in that 2021 summer programme, and like Timoney, will be hoping to finally add some more caps in the upcoming Test matches against Georgia and Portugal. Timoney has had three other outings in the green jersey, featuring twice for Ireland's dirt-trackers against the Maori All Blacks on the 2022 tour of New Zealand, before playing with Ireland A against an All Blacks XV at the RDS in November that year. However, none of those games were full internationals. "I made my debut during the last Lions tour four years ago, and bar getting called in on the day once when there was a few injuries [against Argentina], I've only gotten picked once since then for an actual cap. "In my head, there's absolutely no hint of this being anything other than a chance to represent my country, which is a massive honour. "I'd be lying if I said there wasn't times where I was frustrated, but I certainly have had times where I feel like I'm incredibly close to it, and I've felt like if I had a chance, I would've taken it and run with it. "Obviously it's tough in my position, but that's part of it." It would have been hard to blame Timoney if he'd given up on his Ireland ambitions. An abrasive, ball-carrying and versatile back row, he'd be welcomed with open arms into any number of French Top14 sides, where he'd almost certainly be increasing his pay packet. But he's drawing inspiration from a South African World Cup winner to never park his Test career. "I just value the goal that's there. It can be tough because, being a realist, you come into a lot of camps and you know that you're not necessarily top of the pecking order. "And it's still kills you inside a little bit every time you're not announced and you're not in the team. "But ultimately, if you really value playing for Ireland enough, then there's no choice but to put more emphasis on getting better and working harder. So that's just what I try to do. "There's examples of it all over. There's the Deon Fouries of the world who are uncapped to 35 and captain their team in a World Cup final. "Belief still there. Like I still come into every single camp thinking this will be the one I break through and I'll be into it properly then," he added. Timoney will be among a squad of 32 players who fly to Tbilisi on Wednesday for what will be Ireland's first ever game away to Georgia on Saturday 5 July. While Ireland have never lost to the Georgians, they were given a bit of a scare when the sides lasts met in 2020 as Ireland limped their way to a 23-10 win. The Dublin native has only previously played Georgia in Sevens and at underage level for Ireland, although it's been enough for him to appreciate the physicality in store next week. And as someone who dreamed of becoming a professional player during the mid-2010s, he cites a Georgian great as one of his rugby inspirations. "I have hours of Mamuka Gorgodze [above] footage watched from when I was a kid. I used to watch a highlight video of his pretty much every week. "Back in the day when you're a kid, as you would with loads of different rugby players that were in your position, you'd look up some of their clips, their highlights, but there was a 10-minute compilation video of Mamuka Gorgodze playing a lot of European countries for Georgia. "There's loads of clips from them playing Poland and Russia and Spain and stuff. So I used to watch that a bit when I was younger. "He was a bit of a tank. "I was into all my highlight clips when Rugbydump was a website that was going round back in the day, 'Try-savers and rib-breakers 11' was my favourite one."

Irish Derby full race card and tips - list of runners at the Curragh on Sunday

Bank on Lambourn to complete the coveted Derby double in Sunday's Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh. Twenty colts, five of them trained by Aidan O'Brien, have completed the Epsom-Curragh Derby double while O'Brien is poised to create more history by winning Ireland's premier classic for the 17th time. Ballydoyle will be responsible for half of the 10-strong field. And Lambourn, a son of Australia, who completed the Derby double in 2014, is undoubtedly the horse to beat as he attemptsto confirm Epsom form with British challengers Lazy Griff (second), Tennessee Stud (third) and Pride Of Arras (17th). A listed winner in Craon (France) at two, Lambourn chased home stable-companion Delacroix in the Ballysax on his three-year-old debut. He then challenged late when mastering Lazy Griff in the Chester Vase and stepped-up again when, a 13/2 shot, he made all under Wayne Lordan and saw off all challengers in the Betfred Derby at Epsom, beating Lazy Griff by three and three-quarter lengths, with Tennessee Stud, doing his best work in the closing stages, another length away in third. Ryan Moore is unlikely to be afforded the opportunity to dictate the pace on Sunday. But Ballydoyle are sure to guarantee a strong, even pace, which should allow Lambourn to be handy before making his move forglory. Lambourn has outpointed Lazy Griff twice, once from behind and once from the front. And I see no reason why he won't beat him again. Tennessee Stud , representing Joseph O'Brien, a Group 1 winner last autumn, looked ill-at-ease on Epsom's unique terrain, but finished well. And he might prove the biggest threat to Lambourn this time. Ralph Beckett, who won with Westover in 2022, relies on Pride Of Arras, completely at sea at Epsom when eased and tailed off, and Sir Dinadan, runner-up to Amloc at Goodwood last time. Pride Of Arras is better than that. But the form of his Dante win has taken plenty of knocks. Jessica Harrington's Green Impact, runner-up to Hotazhell in the Beresford last year, is taking the leap from a mile, over which he won the Glencairn (listed) at Leopardstown last time, to a mile and a half. There's plenty of confidence behind Shane Foley's mount but, in a test of stamina, he might come up short. Puppet Master, narrow winner of the Lingfield Derby Trial, looks best of the other Ballydoyle runners.
