By: The Vibes Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Police have completed their investigation into the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, who was found unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory in Papar, on July 16 and died the next day. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the case will be referred to the Attorney-General's Chambers next week, with 60 witnesses interviewed. Zara's mother, through lawyers Hamid Ismail and Shahlan Jufri, denied linking the case to any VIPs and urged the public not to spread unverified claims, warning such actions could hinder investigations. Police found no evidence connecting the incident to political or influential figures. Separately, Saifuddin announced plans to boost the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency's capabilities with two new offshore patrol vessels and the arrival of the ex-USCGC Steadfast in November. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Corporate Smart Internship programme helped 7,051 parolees find jobs, says Saifuddin

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 7,051 parolees undergoing rehabilitation through the Corporate Smart Internship (CSI) programme have secured job offers across five key sectors, according to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He highlighted that 789 companies are collaborating with the Prisons Department to support the initiative, which aims to reintegrate inmates, referred to as 'prospects', into the workforce via parole, licensed release schemes, or Henry Gurney rehabilitation programmes. "Whether released through parole or other supervised schemes, we call them 'prospects', not convicts. They are now outside the prison walls, employed and contributing," he stated in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Aug 4). The job opportunities span the services, plantation, manufacturing, agriculture, and construction sectors. Saifuddin is confident that the number of prospects placed in jobs could soon rise to 8,500, with Guthrie (SD Guthrie Bhd) agreeing to accommodate an additional 644 candidates. "Guthrie not only hires them but also trains them, issues harvesting certificates, and pays them a proper wage," he mentioned, adding that Shopee is expected to take on up to 350 prospects. Addressing concerns about public and employer perceptions, Saifuddin stressed the importance of ongoing engagement to change mindsets and reduce stigma. "The prison is no longer merely a place of punishment. It's a teaching factory for work-based learning. We provide TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) in 35 institutions within our prison system," he explained. Saifuddin was responding to V. Sivakumar (PH–Batu Gajah) regarding the effectiveness of the parole programme from 2024 to June 2025. The training encompasses six core fields: food preparation, services, manufacturing, textiles, agriculture/plantation, and animal husbandry. According to Saifuddin, 19,361 inmates have completed TVET programmes and obtained certifications recognised by the Department of Skills Development (JPK) and the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) as of 2024.

Ukrainian drone attack sparks fire at railway station in Volgograd region, Russia says

Smoke and flames rise from a building near the Archeda train station, amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict, in Frolovo, Volgograd region, Russia, in this screengrab obtained from a social media video released on August 4, 2025. Social media/via REUTERS (Reuters) -A Ukrainian drone attack damaged a power line and sparked a fire at a railway station building in Russia's southern region of Volgograd overnight, the regional administration said on Monday. An unexploded drone fell on railway tracks near the Archeda train station, the administration of the region said on the Telegram messaging app, citing Volgograd region's governor, Andrei Bocharov as saying. "No damage to the tracks has been reported," the administration said. Russian state news agency TASS reported several regional trains were delayed in the area. Flights at the regional airport in the city of Volgograd, which is the administrative centre of the broader Volgograd region, were halted for several hours before resuming at around 0300 GMT, Russia's civil aviation authority Rosaviatsia said on Telegram. Russia's defence ministry said that its units destroyed a total of 61 Ukrainian drones overnight, including six over the Volgograd region. The ministry reports only the number of drones destroyed, not how many Ukraine launched. The region's administration cited Bocharov as saying the attack was "massive" and targeted energy and transport infrastructure. Reuters could not independently verify the reports. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine, which has staged frequent attacks on infrastructure inside Russia that Kyiv deems key to Moscow's war efforts - including on the Volgograd region which lies not far from the border with Ukraine. KLIA to get advance screening, autogates by year-end to curb illegal entry, says home minister

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 — The government is reportedly set to roll out an advance passenger screening system by the end of the year to help prevent illegal entries at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail told the Dewan Rakyat today. According to Free Malaysia Today, he said the system will initially involve 10 of the 56 airlines operating in Malaysia and will allow immigration authorities to access passenger information before their arrival. 'The use of autogates will minimise human interaction as all entry and exit screenings will be fully digital, with no discretion required from officers,' he was quoted as saying. Saifuddin reportedly said the use of digitalised immigration services would reduce opportunities for abuse. A total of 635 autogates will reportedly be installed at 123 entry points nationwide. The first phase will reportedly begin in December at key locations including KLIA Terminals 1 and 2, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and Penang International Airports, as well as the Sultan Iskandar Building and Sultan Abu Bakar Complex in Johor Bahru. Saifuddin reportedly said the autogates will use biometric data such as facial recognition, iris scans and thumbprints to reduce the possibility of system manipulation. The ministry is also testing body-worn cameras on immigration officers at several entry points, including KLIA. A plan to purchase 614 cameras is expected to proceed next month, pending approval. Saifuddin reportedly added that the new measures are part of efforts to address misconduct by enforcement officers. Last year, 26 officers at KLIA were dismissed for their involvement in a syndicate that allowed certain individuals to pass through immigration without proper checks. 'There is no place in the home ministry for officers who lack integrity. We have zero tolerance for such misconduct,' he reportedly said.
