Telangana high court allows Konatham to travel to US

Time of India24-05-2025
Hyderabad: A vacation bench of the Telangana high court comprising Justices Surepalli Nanda and J Sreenivas Rao allowed BRS social media activist Konatham Dileep Reddy to travel to the US, where he attended a memorial book launch in memory of his late father in Virginia recently.

Earlier, a single judge had refused interim relief, citing 10 FIRs against Dileep Reddy and active look-out circulars (LOCs), and deferred the matter to June. Challenging this, he filed an appeal, arguing the delay would defeat the purpose of his travel.
Overruling objections to the maintainability of the appeal, the court relied on prior rulings and set aside the May 1 order, and permitted Dileep Reddy to travel between May 9 and June 11.
Senior counsel K Vivek Reddy, appearing for Dileep Reddy, clarified that his client was an accused in only two of the ten FIRs, and the LOC should not restrict his fundamental right to travel.
The bench ruled in his favour, affirming that being named in a criminal case does not negate one's constitutional right to travel under Article 21.
Citing SC precedents — Sumit Mehta v. State of NCT of Delhi, Satwant Singh Sawhney v.
D. Ramarathnam, and Menaka Gandhi v. Union of India — the court held that personal liberty includes international travel.
Justice Nanda said denying travel for such a personal event would result in serious injustice, especially when no threat to national security was claimed. The bench also noted that Reddy had been allowed to travel abroad earlier under a similar suspension of the LOC in October 2024.

KTR bats for fair share to South States in policy-making, resource-sharing

BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao has stressed the need for protecting the federal structure of the country and has cautioned against the growing centralisation of power and resources in the Hindi heartland at the expense of Southern States, which contribute most to the country's economy. Participating in a discussion on 'The North-South Divide in Indian Politics', organised by a TV network in Jaipur on Sunday, he stated that representation in Parliament must not be dictated purely by population, as the Southern States had proactively implemented population control. Citing data, he noted that while Southern States like Kerala limited its population growth to just 69% since 1950, Uttar Pradesh witnessed a staggering 239% rise. This demographic imbalance, he warned, was now set to translate into a political imbalance through the proposed delimitation exercise, which could see South India lose parliamentary seats as North India stands to gain. 'The more political parties start feeling that the Hindi belt will decide who becomes the Prime Minister, the entire focus will be on making policies that suit the Hindi belt only,' he cautioned. Language imposition On the issue of language imposition, Mr. Rama Rao said that the country has no national language and it does not need one. 'With 22 official languages and over 300 unofficial ones, our diversity is our strength. Language is not just a tool of communication, it's our cultural identity. I am not enforcing Telugu on you, so why enforce Hindi on me,' he asked. Raising concerns over controversies around electoral roll revisions in Bihar, the BRS leader noted that allegations of nearly five lakh voters being struck off the rolls would undermine India's democratic foundations. 'This is deeply worrying. In the last Bihar elections, the losing margin was just 12,500 votes,' he mentioned and asked the Election Commission to act fairly. He questioned the Centre's credibility on the promises made under AP Reorganisation Act such as increase in the Assembly seats in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. 'They hurriedly increased seats in Jammu & Kashmir and Assam for political gains, but ignored South India,' he said.

Gaiety marks Bonalu celebrations in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The annual 'Bonalu' festival was celebrated in Hyderabad on Sunday in a traditional manner with thousands of devotees participating in the festivities. Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and state ministers were among prominent personalities who offered prayers at the Mahankali temples in the old city of Hyderabad. Deputy Chief Minister Vikramarka and Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar, Vakati Srihari and Komatireddy Venkat Reddy offered silk robes to the deity on behalf of the state government at Simhavahini Mahankali temple at Lal Darwaza. The Deputy CM said they prayed for the development of the state and prosperity, and happiness for people. Former Haryana governor Bandaru Dattatreya, BJP MP K. Laxman, MLA D. Nagender, BRS MLC K. Kavitha, BJP leader Madhavi Latha, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) chairman B. R. Naidu, were among prominent personalities who offered prayers at Mahankali Temple Lal Darwaza, the historic Akkanna Madanna temple at Hari Bowli in Shah Ali Banda and other temples to the deity in different parts of the city. The festival dedicated to the Hindu goddess of power, Mahankali or Kali, is intended to ward off evil and usher in peace. Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy offered prayers at the Mahankali temple in Amberpet. Devotees, including a large number of women, queued up at the temples to offer Bonalu, which consists of cooked rice, jaggery, curd and turmeric water, carried in steel and clay pots on their heads. Declared as the state festival after the creation of Telangana state in 2014, Bonalu is being celebrated on a large scale with pomp and gaiety. Various government departments have made all necessary arrangements for the devotees visiting the temples, like drinking water, sanitation, roads and uninterrupted power supply. Police made elaborate security arrangements for the festival. About 1,200 policemen were deployed around the Lal Darwaza temple. The two-day festivities will conclude on Monday with 'Rangam', the oracle prediction at Akkanna Madanna temple, followed by a combined procession on a caparisoned elephant, carrying 'ghatam' of the goddess Mahankali. The procession will pass through the main thoroughfares of the old city, including historic Charminar, before reaching Delhi Darwaza Matha Temple near Musi River, where the ghatam will be immersed. Authorities ordered the closure of liquor shops, bars, restaurants and toddy outlets in Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda Commissionerates in view of the festival. Bonalu is celebrated in parts of Hyderabad and Secunderabad during the Ashadam month. Also known as Ashada Jatra Utsavalu, it is celebrated on four Sundays in different places in the twin cities. Last Sunday, it was celebrated in Secunderabad, where Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy made the offering. It is believed that the festival was first celebrated over 150 years ago following a major cholera outbreak. People believed that the epidemic was due to the anger of Mahankali and began offering Bonalu to placate her.

Congress has three volumes on KTR's misdeeds, says AICC secretary Sampath

HYDERABAD: In a veiled attack on former minister and BRS working president K T Rama Rao, AICC secretary B Sampath Kumar on Saturday claimed that the ruling Congress has compiled evidence of the former IT minister's alleged wrongdoings. He said the party had documented Rama Rao's alleged misdeeds in three large volumes but had so far revealed only a single page. Addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan, Sampath Kumar said, 'There are three volumes — 'Kalvakuntla Katha Kamameesu', 'Ravu Gari Rasaleelalu', and 'Tarak Todella Kathalu'. If we open them, you will hang yourself.' He added that the Congress government had refrained from disclosing certain matters in order to uphold the dignity of Telangana politics. 'There are more 'books' yet to be released, containing controversial political episodes involving KTR and other BRS leaders,' he said. Sampath Kumar also accused Rama Rao of crossing the line in his political rhetoric. Criticising KTR's 'conflicting stance' on meeting TDP leader Nara Lokesh, he questioned the need for denial if there was nothing improper about such interactions.
