Green Day Alters Lyrics to Reference Israel-Palestine War During Epic Coachella Set: ‘Runnin' Away From Pain Like the Kids From Palestine'
While performing the song, lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong sang, 'Runnin' away from pain, like the kids from Palestine / Tales from another broken home.' The original song lyrics from 2004's 'American Idiot' were, 'Runnin' away from pain when you've been victimized.'

Last month, Armstrong pulled a similar lyric alteration from the same song while performing in Australia, singing, 'Am I retarded, or am I just J.D. Vance?' The lyric replaced, 'Am I retarded, or am I just overjoyed?'
These political moments are nothing new for Green Day, who gave a career-spanning epic set at Coachella, largely banked on their arsenal of hits and top-shelf performance. There's only so many times that you can beat the drum that longevity is based on showmanship at the crossroads of excellence. And yet, the drum beats on, at least for the band's show, stacked with decades of generational smashes without any of the wear that a life in rock superstardom can imbue.
It was compelling to bear witness to the breadth of activism that's coded into their discography throughout their hour-and-a-half set, which came just after Bernie Sanders introduced Clairo at the adjacent stage with a condemnation of the current administration. Green Day's music is an act of rebellion, as is the punk scene that molded them, and amid the pop and rock smashes that powered their set, it gave their performance that much potency as they ran back hits from the early 1990s through their most recent album 'Saviors.'
Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' blared in full to set off the performance, somewhat serendipitous, given that Benson Boone gave a career-defining appearance the night before with a rendition of the hit alongside Brian May. What ensued was an assailing factory line of hits, accented by political statements: 'I'm not part of the MAGA agenda,' sang Armstrong on opener 'American Idiot.' 'This song is anti-war,' he stated before 'Holiday.'
Their politics were clear, but it's the freedom of opinion and assuredness that propelled them. Coachella was rife with the biggest hits — 'Basket Case,' 'Wake Me Up When September Ends,' 'When I Come Around' — mixed with fan favorites like 'Brain Stew' and 'Minority.' Green Day has the uncanny ability to make every song sound like a hit, regardless of its initial impact. It's a testament to the value of personality, something that they regularly exude.
Indeed, who else but Armstrong would invite not one, but two, separate audience members to support the band on a few songs? During 'Know Your Enemy,' a girl named Brooke came on stage to sing alongside Armstrong. She nailed the moment, covering her mouth in disbelief. Later, another audience member strapped on Armstrong's guitar for closer 'Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),' much more assured in his abilities. Few bands are so finely chiseled that they can count on the confidence of strangers; that only happens when you know you've achieved full potential.

ELLE Editors Swear By These Designer Shoulder Bags for Your Next Investment
There's a reason the shoulder bag endures: it's a wardrobe staple that manages to feel both timeless and of-the-moment (I mean, just look at the staying power of the Fendi Baguette). Worn with nonchalance or intentional polish, it lends any look a certain ease. And this season, it's less about logos and more about silhouettes: crescent curves, boxy minis, slouchy leathers—all with quiet, confident details that speak volumes without trying too hard. Whether it's paired with a dress for brunch, peeking out from beneath a trench, or tucked under the arm with off-duty denim, the right shoulder bag doesn't follow trends—it defines them. It's not just an accessory; it's a statement. And if you're going to invest in one bag this season, this is it. I genuinely consider this bag a classic go-to—the kind you'll carry through every chapter of your life. It's the piece I instinctively reach for to add a touch of polish and ease to any outfit, making it well worth the splurge. Dimensions: Height: 5.9 inches; width: 10.2 inches; depth: 2.8 inches Colors: 9 options Material: Suede leather If the Birkin had a downtown sister with a softer edge, this would be it. 'I hate how much I love this bag. It's the perfectly slouched version of the Birkin, and it's much cooler because of it. Gone are the days of teeny tiny purses that you carried in one hand with your iPhone clutched in the other. I want everything in my purse—a book, a spare book, a planner, a lip combo, 37 loose hair ties, and the kitchen sink,' says Alexandra Hildreth, fashion news editor. Dimensions: Height: 9.5 inches; width: 13.6 inches; depth: 4.5 inches Colors: Black Material: 100% calfskin leather Some bags are conversation starters—others become part of your personality. For Madison Rexroat, assistant accessories editor, this one does both. 'Anyone who's gone for a night out with me or seen my Instagram the past few months has seen this Roberto Cavalli x LeSportSac bag. I'm a fiend for zebra print (though it comes in tiger, snake, blue and black, too) and the slick exterior fabric has withstood Coachella dust, Thailand humidity, Mediterranean salt air, New York City grime, and everything in between,' says Rexroat. Dimensions: Height: 8.7 inches; width: 16.1 inches; depth: 2.8 inches Colors: White/Black Zebra Print, Yellow/Black Zebra PrintMaterial: 1oo% nylon Clean lines and a thoughtful silhouette—sometimes that's all it takes for a shoulder bag to become a closet staple. 'Simply put, I love the shape of this bag. It feels very on-trend with some of the more minimal styles that have been on the market, but the slight dip in the middle gives it a bit of an unexpected touch,' says Dale Arden Chong, senior fashion commerce Height: 7.6 inches; width: 14 inches; depth: 6.8 inches Colors: Black, Bordeaux, Brandy Material: 100% polyamide Structured, but never stiff, the Le Teckel is something you'll spot on all of the fashion girls in Paris, given its striking shape and elongated straps. 'I've been hypnotized by the Le Teckel family ever since it debuted during the spring/summer 2024 season. I'm especially in love with this upgraded version because it can hold all the necessities and fit comfortably on my shoulder, thanks to its elongated straps,' Alexis Bennett Parker, ELLE's commerce content lead, says. 'Plus, it's an architectural work of art that's crafted with sharp lines. This is the type of bag that makes a pair of jeans and a T-shirt look instantly chic and will never go out of style.' Dimensions: Height: 4.3 inches; width: 13 inches; depth: 3.9 inches Colors: Noir, Dark Green, Ivory, Grey Material: 100% leather Some bags are instantly iconic—others only deepen their appeal with time. Bennett Parker still can't get over the craftsmanship of one particular standout. 'Speaking of work of art, there aren't many bags as beautifully crafted as Bottega Veneta's Kalimero. It's the first bag Matthieu Blazy created for the Milanese fashion house, and to this day, I'm still smitten by its intricate beauty,' she says. Dimensions: Height: 6.3 inches; width: 9.8 inches; depth: 2 inches Colors: Barolo, Fondant, Black, Bone Once reserved for fall and winter, brown suede has officially broken season boundaries. 'Brown suede bags are all over the place this summer—much to my surprise and delight. This Khaite style is my favorite that I've seen, and I think it will be perfect for many seasons to come, especially this fall,' says Meg Donohue, associate fashion commerce editor. Dimensions: Height: 8 inches; width: 13 inches; depth: 6.5 inches Colors: Mud Small in size but big on impact, the Le Bisou Perle Leather Shoulder Bag blends sculptural elegance with a minimalist finish. The curved silhouette and resin details give it that effortless French-girl appeal, making it the kind of piece that elevates even the simplest tank and jeans outfit combo. Dimensions: Height: 3.5 inches; width: 9.5 inches; depth: 1 inch Colors: Black, Brown Some bags just have that It girl energy—and for Laura Tarafa, ELLE's commerce writer, this Prada style was love at first sight. 'Lately, I've been obsessed with effortlessly chic, It girl styles. This Prada bag was an instant fixation. Every time I saw it on someone, I couldn't take my eyes off it! When I finally caved and treated myself to one, I fell in love with it even more. My favorite details include the wrap-around belt, the charming drawstring ties, and the soft, glossy leather. It's unstructured in that laidback way, but the polished touches make it feel elevated enough to dress up,' says Tarafa. Dimensions: Height: 6.1 inches; width: 12.6 inches; depth: 4.7 inches Colors: 6 options Crafted from rich suede with subtle leather trim, this suede moment channels vintage Americana with a modern edge. The gold-tone ID tag adds a signature touch, while the slouchy shape and adjustable strap make it endlessly wearable, from city errands to weekend escapes. Dimensions: Height: 16.8 inches; width: 15.8 inches; depth: 1.8 inches Colors: Cashew Tan Material: 100% calf suede with leather trim Timeless with just the right amount of edge, the Prada Cleo has quietly become a staple among those who know. ELLE's digital director, Claire Stern Milch, makes a strong case for why it belongs in your forever wardrobe. 'There are It bags—and then there are forever bags. With its '90s aesthetic, hobo-style shape, and sleek brushed leather finish, the Prada Cleo is an instant classic for good reason,' says Stern Milch. A Guide To The "Buffy The Vampire Slayer " Reboot
It's been over 20 years since we said goodbye to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but the iconic show's legacy still lives on today. The supernatural YA drama series, which aired from 1997 to 2003, stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, a teenage girl who's chosen by fate to battle vampires, demons, and other supernatural forces. With a little help from her friends, she juggles her life as a Sunnydale High School student along with her sacred destiny as the "Slayer." Now, there's a new generation of slayers on the way. A Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is officially in the works at Hulu. Michelle Trachtenberg will always hold a special place in Buffy fans' hearts. While details about the series are still largely being kept under wraps, there's already plenty to get excited about. Here's everything we know about the Buffy reboot so far: Sarah Michelle Gellar will reprise her role as Buffy Summers and serve as an executive producer. Here's a behind-the-scenes update she shared. It looks like a table read for the pilot! 👀 "I have always listened to the fans and heard your desire to revisit Buffy and her world, but it was not something I could do unless I was sure we would get it right," Gellar wrote in an Instagram post in February. "This has been a long process, and it's not over yet. I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there.' "Thank you to all the fans who never stopped asking for this," Gellar added. "This will be for you." Ryan Kiera Armstrong has been cast as the lead Slayer. Per TVLine, her character Nova (which may be a placeholder name) is described as a "cerebral" 16-year-old who is "very smart and a bit of a loner." Gellar's role is expected to be recurring, with 15-year-old Armstrong serving as the new protagonist. Armstrong has previously had roles on Anne with an E, American Horror Story: Red Tide, and the Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. In May, Armstrong took to Instagram to celebrate her big news, writing, "i'm so beyond thankful and excited to share that i am going to be apart of the BTVS universe!!! i am so excited for this journey with you @sarahmgellar i am in awe of you. ... i'm still in so much shock and disbelief." "From the moment I saw Ryan's audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side," Gellar wrote in an Instagram post of her own. "To have that kind of emotional intelligence , and talent, at such a young age is truly a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room." In July, five new cast additions were announced: Faly Rakotohavana as Hugo, Ava Jean as Larkin, Sarah Bock as Gracie, Daniel di Tomasso as Abe, and Jack Cutmore-Scott as Mr. Burke. Viewers might recognized Bock from Severance and Cutmore-Scott from Frasier and Oppenheimer (2023)! Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao, who's known for her work on Nomadland (2020) and the MCU's Eternals (2021), will serve as the director and co-EP. Additional executive producers attached to the pilot include Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, OG Buffy EPs Gail Berman and Fran and Kaz Kuzui, along with Dolly Parton (whose production company Sandollar was a producer on the original series). Gellar, who was previously against doing a Buffy revival, credits Zhao personally for changing her mind. "Every pitch I heard was just like, 'Let's just do Buffy again,'" she said in an interview with Elite Daily. "Why? But the passion that [Zhao] came to me with, what she wanted to do with the show and the character, and why Buffy is needed now — it was the first time where I thought, 'OK, there's a reason.'" "Three years ago, I got a call from my dear friend and mentor, Gail Berman," Gellar wrote in an Instagram post. "She told me that she wanted me to sit down with Chloé Zhao to hear her take on a potential Buffy revival. I was blown away that Chloé even knew who I was, but, as I've always done, I told Gail that I just didn't see a way for the show to exist again. We'd always been aligned on that, but this time I heard something different in her voice. I eventually agreed to go (mainly just to meet Chloé) and our twenty minute coffee quickly turned into a four hour adventure. We laughed, we cried, but mostly we both talked about how much this show means to us." 4. Buffy creator Joss Whedon will not be involved with the reboot. Christina Carpenter wants to reprise her role as Cordelia Chase after her character's "unjust" ending on the spin-off Angel... "I am so excited for fans, and I know it will be fantastic because of who's involved," Carpenter said of the reboot in an interview with IGN. "To see this actually happen for the fans makes me thrilled. I am so hopeful to be included, for Cordelia to be a part of this new iteration." ...which may work out, because Gellar wants to bring characters back from the dead! "We will try to find a balance between new and old characters," she said in an interview with Vanity Fair. "My dream is to bring back everyone who has died, but space will have to be made for new stories as well." Expect the tone to be different. "It will be lighter than the last few seasons of the original," Gellar told Vanity Fair. "We're trying to figure out how to modernize the themes of the series, especially what it means to feel like an outsider in a world dominated by social media," Gellar added. "What we want to explore are the space-time boundaries that affect society today." The reboot will honor the late Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Buffy's sister Dawn. "We'll be able to do something," Gellar said in an interview with Parade. "We'll do what's appropriate." It hasn't yet been confirmed which original cast members will return. But, based on this cryptic Instagram post, fans think there's a pretty good possibility Alyson Hannigan will reprise her role as Willow Rosenberg. IYKYK. 💔 Finally, Gellar revealed that the children of some OG cast members auditioned for the reboot. 👀 "I know somebody who was on the show whose child auditioned on the show,' she teased to US Weekly. "I know a few people from the show whose children came in." All seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer are available to stream on Hulu.
