Sukuk misuse case: Tan Sri quizzed by MACC for six hours
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the process of recording the statement, which began at about 9am, ended at 3pm and will continue tomorrow.
He said that due to the Tan Sri's health condition, the process of recording the statement was conducted at his house in the Klang Valley.
"So far, MACC has recorded statements from 52 witnesses, including the Tan Sri and his family members...the same process will continue tomorrow,' Azam said when contacted today.
Meanwhile, it was reported that the MACC also conducted a raid at the Tan Sri's residence in Melaka, but nothing was seized or confiscated.
Previously, it was reported that the MACC seized various assets, including handbags, jewellery, luxury vehicles, watches, cash, and a luxury residence, estimated at approximately RM32mil, believed to belong to a highway concessionaire with the title Tan Sri. - Bernama

Over 400 tonnes of used batteries seized from unlicensed waste facility in Kedah
ALOR SETAR: The Kedah Environment Department has taken action against a factory in the Bukit Selambau Industrial Area, Sungai Petani, suspected of conducting unlicensed off-site scheduled waste storage and recovery activities. Its director Sharifah Zakian Syed Sahab said the action was taken during the "Ops Gempur" operation from 9am to 1pm on Tuesday (Aug 5), which revealed the facility was operating without Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval or a valid licence. "During the inspection, we found approximately 100 tonnes of used lithium batteries and around 317 tonnes of crushed used batteries, both classified as scheduled waste," she said in a statement on Tuesday. Additionally, about 20 tonnes of recovered metal powder were discovered on site. She said the department seized the factory's production equipment under Section 38(1)(a) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, as they were being operated without pollution control systems or department approval. Investigations are ongoing under Sections 18(1), 34A(6) and 34B(1) of the same Act. Sharifah Zakian said they would continue to strengthen monitoring and enforcement efforts, particularly targeting illegal waste processing activities that cause environmental pollution and pose public health risks. Defence closes case in Zayn Rayyan neglect trial, verdict set for Oct 31
PETALING JAYA: The defence team for Ismanira Abdul Manaf, the mother of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin, closed its case today after presenting five witnesses. The court has scheduled the verdict for October 31. Defence counsel Haresh Mahadevan informed the court that no further witnesses would be called following the testimony of child psychologist Dr Noor Aishah Rosli. Judge Dr Syahliza Warnoh set September 8 for written submissions, September 22 for oral replies, and October 31 for the final verdict. Ismanira was ordered to enter her defence on July 21 after the prosecution established a prima facie case. She testified over three days, maintaining her innocence. Dr Noor Aishah testified that WhatsApp messages exchanged between Ismanira and her husband were normal expressions of frustration from a mother caring for an autistic child. She stated, 'From a psychological perspective, these should not be viewed as an intention to commit a crime. If you ask anyone, it's common for messages to a spouse to contain harsh words, but without any intent behind them.' She described the messages as emotional venting rather than evidence of abuse, adding, 'I find these kinds of conversations reflect a marital relationship. The language may appear harsh, but it's just surface-level, idle talk meant only to release emotions.' The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutors Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin, Aqharie Durranie Aziz, and Nur Sabrina Zubairi. Ismanira's defence team included Haresh Mahadevan, Ramzani Idris, and Lavanesh Haresh. Zayn Rayyan was reported missing on December 5, 2023, and his body was found the next day near his home at Apartment Idaman, Damansara Damai. An autopsy revealed injuries consistent with self-defence. Ismanira and her husband, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, had pleaded not guilty to neglecting their son under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum penalty of RM50,000, 20 years' imprisonment, or both. Mineral licence corruption cases to be mentioned Sept 23

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 5): The corruption cases involving two Sabah assemblymen and a businessman over mineral prospecting licences will be mentioned again at the Sessions Court here on September 23. Judge Jason Juga fixed the date following a request by the prosecution during proceedings on Tuesday. The accused are Tanjung Batu assemblyman Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy, Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof @ Josree Yacob and businessman Datuk Tei Jiann Cheing. The prosecution informed the court that several documents had already been served to the defence under Section 51A of the Criminal Procedure Code, but requested a further pre-trial case management date to serve additional materials including forensic reports, telecommunications data and Immigration Department verification. All three individuals had pleaded not guilty to their respective charges on June 30. Andi and Yusof are accused of receiving bribes from Tei in connection with separate applications for mineral prospecting licences. Meanwhile, Tei faces two counts of offering bribes to the assemblymen. Andi, 44, who is also Sabah's Assistant Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship, is alleged to have accepted RM150,000 from Tei at his residence in Jalan Pantai, Sembulan, on May 12, 2024, as an inducement to facilitate the processing of Sinaran Hayat Sdn Bhd's licence application. Yusof, 69, is accused of accepting RM200,000 from Tei at a hotel in Kota Kinabalu on March 6, 2024. The money was allegedly for facilitating Nusa Kini Sdn Bhd's licence application. The alleged offences were under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 while Tei, 37, from Selangor, was charged under Section 16(b)(A) of the same act. All the offences are punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act, which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of at least five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction. Andi and Yusof were present in court while Tei attended the proceedings virtually via Zoom. The court had extended the trio's bails, pending disposal of their cases. Counsel Datuk Ram Singh, Rizwandean Bukhary M. Borhan, Datin Jaharah Patimbangi, Elhanan James, Shahlan Jufri, Mohd Luqman Syazwan Zabidi Md Zain, Kamarudin Mohmad Chinki and Prem Elmer Ganasan represented Andi. The same legal team, except Jaharah, represented Yusof while Tei was represented by counsel Edward Paul, Batholomew Jingulam and Jul Hamri Jumhani.
