SAN FRANCISCO, May 21, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Maryna Karpenko, an award-winning product designer and digital product leader whose previous work has reached millions of people worldwide, has joined Meta, where she helps shape the future of digital communication on a global scale. Some of Maryna's top honors include the MUSE Creative Award, the Vega Digital Award, and the Davey Award.
Previously, Maryna led the mobile messaging experience at Mattermost, an open-source platform for secure collaboration and workflow orchestration, and Y Combinator's largest-ever Series B investment. There, she redefined how teams connect in high-trust environments like government, finance, and tech.
Maryna first made her mark at Hily, a fast-growing dating app, where she launched live-streaming features that helped users connect in more meaningful ways and stand out in a crowded market.
She was also the Lead Product Designer at Wavechat, where she built the app from the ground up. Her work led to a win at Product Hunt's Maker Festival (Snapchat Edition) and a feature on the Apple App Store.
How it Started
Maryna Karpenko's passion for design began early. As a child, she balanced competitive gymnastics with hours spent exploring the online world. She taught herself Photoshop through YouTube tutorials and quickly became captivated by the creative possibilities of digital tools. 'I was always drawn to making things on a screen,' she says.
A defining moment came when a classmate brought a first-generation iPod to school. 'I remember how natural it felt to use—so intuitive and thoughtfully made. That was the moment I realized great products don't just solve problems; they feel like magic. I knew then that I wanted to build things like that,' Karpenko recalls.
Gifted in math, she pursued a degree in applied mathematics while continuing to develop her creative skills. Over time, her curiosity shifted toward understanding how people think and feel, leading her to study psychology.
By the time she graduated, product design had emerged as a defined career path, with inspiring role models like Julie Zhuo and Luke Wroblewski leading the way. 'It finally clicked for me: this was the path that blended creativity, technology, and human insight,' she says.
Her path to a third degree in design was not easy. But looking back, Karpenko credits her diverse academic background and creative drive with shaping her into the designer she is today.
Operating at the Intersection of Disciplines
Steve Jobs famously championed the idea that great innovation happens when technology meets the humanities. At the launch of the iPad 2, he summed up Apple's approach:"It's in Apple's DNA that technology alone is not enough — it's technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the results that make our heart sing."
Maryna Karpenko, a dedicated student of Apple's design philosophy, echoes this belief. She credits her cross-disciplinary background as a core driver of her work: "Psychology helps me understand people—their context, motivations, and mental models. Math gave me the structured thinking to collaborate deeply with engineers. And design school taught me how to bring it all together to solve real human problems."
Giving Back to the Community
As a respected voice in the design community, Maryna Karpeno serves as a jury panelist for the Communicator Awards and is an active member of the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts (AIVA), where she helps spotlight the work of the next generation of designers.
She shares that, 'I've been incredibly lucky to have people take a chance on me. Now it's my turn to help emerging talent get seen.'

This Is How Much AMZN, GOOGL, MSFT, and META Will Spend on AI This Year

Big Tech companies are ramping up their spending on artificial intelligence, with Amazon (AMZN), Alphabet (GOOGL), Microsoft (MSFT), and Meta (META) expecting a combined total of $364 billion in capital expenditures for 2025. This is a sharp increase from their prior forecast of $325 billion earlier this year. Nevertheless, despite the massive spending, investor reactions were mostly positive, with shares of Meta, Microsoft, and Alphabet rising after their recent earnings reports showed strong results. Microsoft led the group with $88.7 billion in capital expenditures for Fiscal 2025, which exceeded its earlier projections. Separately, Meta raised the lower end of its spending outlook for a new range of $66-$72 billion. This was due to aggressive AI data center investments and talent recruitment. In addition, Alphabet boosted its estimate from $75 billion to $85 billion, thanks to strong demand for its Google Cloud services. As a result, analysts responded positively, with Wedbush raising Meta's price target to $920, RBC lifting Microsoft's to $640, and Needham increasing Alphabet's to $220. However, Amazon was the outlier, with its shares falling despite forecasting $118.5 billion in spending. The drop was due to worries about weaker operating income guidance at Amazon Web Services, even as its AI business grows at triple-digit annual rates. Interestingly, though, while AI investments are making many investors optimistic, some market observers, including Apollo's Torsten Sløk and short-seller Jim Chanos, warn that an AI bubble could form that surpasses the dot-com era. Which Big Tech Stock Is the Better Buy? Turning to Wall Street, out of the four stocks mentioned above, analysts think that AMZN stock has the most room to run. In fact, AMZN's average price target of $259.87 per share implies more than 20% upside potential. On the other hand, analysts expect the least from META stock, as its average price target of $850.98 equates to a gain of 13.4%.

Meta Is Now Targeting Startups that Specialize in AI Videos

Social media firm Meta Platforms (META) is continuing its aggressive push into artificial intelligence by targeting startups that specialize in creating and editing AI-generated videos. According to The Information, Meta recently held talks with Pika, a startup that builds realistic video-generation tools, about a possible acquisition or licensing deal. Discussions with another startup, Higgsfield, have ended, while similar talks with Runway earlier this year also failed to progress. Nevertheless, advanced video AI could play a key role in CEO Mark Zuckerberg's vision for 'personal superintelligence,' which focuses on entertainment, culture, and personal relationships. It would also strengthen Meta's push into smart glasses and virtual reality, areas where it has invested tens of billions of dollars. Furthermore, Meta recently added AI-powered video-editing tools to its Meta AI assistant and Instagram's Edits app, with Zuckerberg telling analysts that these features are 'seeing early progress.' As a result, a partnership with Pika or similar startups could help Meta keep up with competitors. It is worth noting that this strategy comes as Meta overhauls its AI operations after earlier setbacks. Indeed, the company recently appointed Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang as chief AI officer and invested over $14 billion in Scale. Meta also brought in former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman and Safe Superintelligence co-founder Daniel Gross, who now co-lead Meta Superintelligence Labs, its new AI division. In addition, Meta recently acquired voice AI startup PlayAI and poached top researchers from rivals like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google (GOOGL) in order to accelerate its progress. Is Meta a Buy, Sell, or Hold? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Strong Buy consensus rating on META stock based on 43 Buys, three Holds, and zero Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. Furthermore, the average META price target of $850.98 per share implies 22.4% upside potential.
