Alphabet is the most high profile publicly traded company to secure a lucrative AI contract from the U.S. Defense Department. Other companies that were granted contract awards of up to $200 million for AI work include privately held start-ups Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI. American defense officials said the awards will help the agency accelerate its adoption of 'advanced AI capabilities to address critical national security challenges.' The selected companies will work to develop AI agents across several mission areas at the Defense Department, although exactly what projects Alphabet and the other companies will work on is not clear. Strategic Advantage In a news release, the U.S. Defense Department said, 'The adoption of AI is transforming the Department's ability to support our warfighters and maintain strategic advantage over our adversaries.' This appears to be Alphabet's first contract with the Defense Department specifically for AI. OpenAI was previously awarded a year-long $200 million contract from the Defense Department in 2024, shortly after it said that it would collaborate with defense technology start-up Anduril to deploy advanced AI systems for 'national security missions.' In June of this year, the company launched OpenAI for Government for U.S. federal, state, and local government workers. Is GOOGL Stock a Buy? The stock of Alphabet has a consensus Strong Buy rating among 37 Wall Street analysts. That rating is based on 28 Buy and nine Hold recommendations issued in the last three months. The average GOOGL price target of $202.24 implies 12.24% upside from current levels.

Nvidia says U.S. government will allow it to resume H20 AI chip sales to China

Nvidia announced Tuesday that it hopes to resume sales of its H20 general processing units to clients in China, saying that the U.S. government had assured the company would be granted licenses. Nvidia's sales of the H20 chips, which had been designed specifically to keep them out of export controls on China, were halted in April. "The U.S. government has assured NVIDIA that licenses will be granted, and NVIDIA hopes to start deliveries soon," the company said in a statement. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in recent months has ramped up his lobbying against export controls, arguing that they inhibited American tech leadership. In May, Huang said chip restrictions had already cut Nvidia's China market share nearly in half. Huang on Tuesday also announced a new "fully compliant" GPU, NVIDIA RTX PRO, saying "is ideal for digital twin AI for smart factories and logistics." The announcement of the potential U.S. policy reversal comes following a visit between Huang and U.S. President Donald Trump last week and as the CEO makes his visit to China. In his meeting with President Trump and U.S. policymakers, Huang had reaffirmed NVIDIA's support for the Administration's job creation and onshoring efforts, as well as the aim for America to lead in global AI, the company said. Meanwhile, in Beijing, it was confirmed that Huang has met with government and industry officials to discuss the benefits of AI and ways for researchers to advance safe and secure AI for the benefit of all.

Rays could move to Tampa after $1.7 billion sale finalizes

The Tampa Bay Rays might finally live up to their namesake. A group led by Jacksonville developer Patrick Zalupski is expected to buy the franchise for a reported $1.7 billion as early as September, and it wants to move the team from St. Petersburg to Tampa, according to The Athletic. Current Rays owner Stu Sternberg purchased the team for $200 million in 2004. 3 Soon to be Ray's owner, Patrick Zalupski University of Florida 3 Damage done to Tropicana field after Hurricane Milton. AP There has been pressure on Sternberg to sell the team, as the Rays have been trying to build a new stadium for almost two decades. His most recent plan was to build a $1.3 billion stadium in St. Petersburg, but Hurricane Milton thwarted those plans and damaged the roof of Tropicana Field in the process. 'After careful deliberation, we have concluded we cannot move forward with the new ballpark and development project at this moment,' Sternberg said in a statement in March. 'A series of events beginning in October that no one could have anticipated led to this difficult decision.' Instead, the Rays have gotten a taste of Tampa this season as they've played their home games at Steinbrenner Field, the Yankees spring training ballpark. Rays fans in Tampa have seemingly shown support for the team as they fill almost 90 percent of the 11,000-person capacity stadium on average. Comparing those numbers to last year at Tropicana Field, they could only manage to fill 38 percent of the 45,300-seat stadium on average. 3 Ryan Pepiot pitching at Steinbrenner Field. Getty Images Zalupski, founder, chairman and CEO of Florida-based homebuilder Dream Finders Homes, is no stranger to owning baseball teams. He already counts minor league franchises the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp and Akron Rubber Ducks as part of his portfolio. Now, he's on the brink of adding a major league franchise, and maybe even getting them a long sought-after home in a new place.
