Two Southern League sides were dumped out of the knockout English Cup in the first round. Universities lost to United and Selwyn were upset 3-2 by second-tier Western.
Advancing to the quarterfinals were Nomads (14-0 over Parklands, the club's biggest-ever win), Ferrymead Bays (8-0 over Burwood), Coastal Spirit (2-0 over Oxford), Halswell United (2-1 over FC Twenty 11), and Waimakariri United (1-0 over St Albans Shirley). Cashmere Tech had a first-round bye.
Netball
In the Premier 1 netball competition, defending champions Lincoln University A got off to a poor start, going down 54-50 to Kereru A at the Christchurch Netball Centre on Monday.
The scores were tied, 40-40 at the end of the third quarter, before Kereru pulled ahead late.
Last year's runners-up Technical A got up over Lincoln University B 57-46, while St Nicholas A beat Kereru B 61-43 and Hearts St Peter's won 51-33 over Belfast A.
Kereru A and Technical will meet in a bumper clash next week, while Lincoln University A will look to pick themselves up against Hearts St Peter's.
Kereru B play Belfast while St Nicholas meets Lincoln University B.
Rugby
After taking a break for Easter, the Metro rugby competition resumes at 2.45pm on Saturday.
New DCL Shield holders Linwood will put the trophy on the line away at winless Shirley who have lost to Marist Albion and Christchurch so far.
Top-of-the-table and unbeaten New Brighton face Christchurch, who sit fourth after a narrow loss to Belfast and a win over Shirley.
The other unbeaten team, Canterbury University, host Lincoln University in a varsity clash at Ilam Fields.
The other matches see HSOB play Sydenham, Belfast host Burnside and Marist Albion are away to Sumner.

Hooker's key to longevity: Few beers, physio, swimming with sons
Rowan O'Gorman is in his 25th season of premier rugby, and even after notching another remarkable milestone the veteran hooker shows no sign of slowing down. O'Gorman came off the bench for Marist Albion in their 33-26 win over Lincoln University on Saturday, making his 350th appearance for the club's division one side. Now 43, he's the oldest player in the competition – but says he will keep playing for as long as he can. 'I'll just keep on playing until I'm done enjoying it or get too injured. The number (of games) is all about how good the boys are going, if the boys don't need me, then they don't need me. 'But it's still fun to be around.' His 350 appearances since his debut aged 18 in 2000 are not only the most for Marist, but a Metro record as well - one O'Gorman has held since he overtook fellow Marist man Tala Kale's record of 330 in 2022. Recovery is key at his age. O'Gorman credits his longevity to 'a few beers,' good physios, and regular swims with his sons Eli, 6, and Noah, 9 – both of whom play in Marist's junior grades. 'Swimming pools are a really good one, that's quite often the usual, take the kids to swimming lessons on the Sunday or Monday, and go for a swim,' he said. His boys were on hand for Saturday's milestone and got the chance to run out with their dad before kick-off. 'It was pretty cool being able to do that with them,' O'Gorman said. 'Noah, the oldest one, he's right into it. He would've been to every game pretty much since he was about three-years-old. 'The younger one (Eli) enjoys playing around in the mud, but I'm not sure how much footy he actually watches.' Rugby runs deep in the family. O'Gorman's father Kevin played more than 200 games for Marist, and several of Kevin's six siblings – and their children – have also represented the club. Over the years, O'Gorman has won the premier competition three times and held the DCL Shield on 10 occasions, including Marist's current reign. He believes there's a strong chance of more silverware this season. Marist have been the standout team through the regular season, sitting atop the table with one round to go before the playoffs. 'If we play well, we give ourselves a good opportunity to do that and lock away the DCL as well,' O'Gorman said. 'It's definitely one of the stronger squads I've been involved with. 'A lot of it when it comes down to this end of the season is preparing well, doing your homework and making you're in the right space when it comes to the Saturday.'

Striker's return a boost for Cashmere Technical ahead of crucial Coastal clash
Cashmere Technical's recent lift in form and the return of their star striker has them feeling confident ahead of Sunday's crunch match with Coastal Spirit. Garbhan Coughlan came off the bench in Tech's 6-0 win over Selwyn United last weekend, marking his return with a goal after missing several games to attend his brother's wedding in Ireland. Captain Tom Schwarz said Coughlan's return was a big boost, but credited the whole squad for starting to click after a patchy start to the season that saw them drop as low as fifth. 'We had a bit where we weren't playing too badly but we weren't picking up results. It's always nice to play reasonably well and get three points. 'Everyone's aware of Garb's qualities on the football pitch, especially in front of goal, so he adds a massive amount to the team.' Tech are now third, two points behind second-placed Coastal Spirit, who have a game in hand. Only the top two sides at the end of the season qualify for the National League. Kick-off at Linfield Park is at noon on Sunday.
