Enrollment of Filipinos in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) courses on online learning platform Coursera grew by 383% in the past year to outpace the average growth in Asia Pacific and across the globe, results of its latest Global Skills Report showed.
According to the report released by the New York-listed education provider, GenAI enrollment in the Philippines outpaced the Asia Pacific average of 132%, and the global average of 195%, reflecting the country's adoption of emerging technologies.
"Aligning with national goals to train 1 million AI-skilled workers by 2028, these trends are critical for enhancing competitiveness, as 86% of Filipino knowledge workers already use AI at work—well above global and regional averages," the report read.
Jumps were also seen in enrollment in courses involving cybersecurity which climbed 53%, professional certificates up 23%, and critical thinking up 10%.
The Philippines was ranked 60th out of 80 countries in Coursera's AI maturity Index, the platform's comparative analysis of global AI readiness which takes into account AI learning, research, and innovation.
"The Philippines is laying the foundation for a digitally confident workforce. AI is a clear priority for employers and learners are stepping up by acquiring GenAI skills and industry micro-credentials to stay ahead," Coursera Asia Pacific head Eklavya Bhave said in a separate statement.
"From AI strategies to forward-thinking education policies, we're seeing a strong national commitment to equipping Filipinos with the right mix of technical, business, and human skills," he added.
The latest report ranked the Philippines 18th in Asia Pacific, and 88th out of 109 countries across the globe in terms of overall skills proficiency, with 2.7 million Coursera learners.
The Global Skills Report took into account data from 170 million Coursera learners from March 2024 to February 2025. The ranking is based on learner proficiency across 274 skills in business, technology, and data science.
"With 67% of employers highlighting skill gaps and 68% of employees requiring reskilling by 2030, formal credentials and targeted upskilling programs have become essential," the report read.
"Employers plan to redeploy nearly three in 10 workers into new roles following reskilling efforts," it added.
Top learners skills in the country are software development life cycle, digital content, IT infrastructure, campaign management, application lifecycle management, content marketing, process analysis, system software, social media strategy, and Google Workplace. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

US and EU close in on 15% tariff deal, FT reports

The EU and United States are closing in on a trade deal that would impose 15% tariffs on European imports, similar to the agreement US President Donald Trump struck with Japan this week, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday. Both the EU and US would waive tariffs on some products, including aircraft, spirits and medical devices, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. The bloc will continue to prepare a possible €93-billion ($109-billion) package of retaliatory tariffs, set at up to 30 per cent, in case they cannot agree a deal by August 1, the report added. The White House and a spokesperson for the European Union did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Reuters could not immediately verify the FT report. The Commission earlier said on Wednesday its primary focus was to achieve a negotiated outcome with the United States to avert 30% US tariffs that Trump has said he will impose on the 27-nation bloc on August 1. In 2024, the US imported more than $55 billion of vehicles and automotive parts from Japan. From the EU, the equivalent figure was €47.3 billion ($55.45 billion), with far fewer US models sold into the EU or Japanese market. — Reuters

Marcos: PH-US reaffirm alliance on economy, security after visit

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on Wednesday that he, US President Donald Trump, and other key American officials had 'productive discussions' during his three-day official visit as Manila and Washington, D.C. reaffirmed their commitments. 'We've reaffirmed our mutual commitment to further strengthening our long-standing alliance and growing our economies for the benefit of the people and in pursuit of our national interests,' said Marcos in a statement following his arrival on Wednesday evening. 'We exchange views on key regional and international security issues, focusing on how the two countries could cooperate and contribute towards addressing common challenges and priorities.' Security Marcos said he and Trump reaffirmed the two countries' 'ironclad commitment' to the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty amid growing tension in the Indo-Pacific region. 'I thank the United States for its consistent support for the preservation of regional peace and stability and for upholding the rule of law in the South China Sea,' said Marcos. 'We discussed enhanced cooperation on cybersecurity, energy supply, resilience and critical infrastructure. I underscored the importance of our multilateral engagement, especially with neighboring countries to continue to reinforce the network of common alliances in the region,' he added. Economy Marcos also welcomed the US government's pledge of an additional $15 million for private sector development under the Luzon Economic Corridor Initiative and an additional $48 million in foreign assisted projects. 'We will continue to work with the State Department as well with the US Congress for the implementation of these programs,' he said. 'I conveyed to President Trump that we remain positive about the future of Philippine-US trade, including investment relations, especially in the context of economic security and a fair, balanced reciprocal trade. We expressed our commitment to continue engaging his team to further bolster Philippine-US ties and strengthen Philippines economic security.' Marcos also met with business leaders and top executives of leading global investment, healthcare, infrastructure, and semiconductor companies. 'We return to the Philippines with over $21 billion in investment pledges that have the potential to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs for Filipinos within our country,' he shared. Further, Marcos was also welcomed by Secretary of State and National Security Adviser Marco Rubio, and US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in different meetings where they discussed maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea and the Indo-Pacific region. Following his visit, Marcos also expressed his intent to host Trump next year to attend the ASEAN Summit in Manila, which also coincides with the 80th anniversary of the Philippines and US diplomatic relations and the 75 years of the Mutual Defense Treaty. 'The United States is our oldest and only treaty ally, and my visit to meet the new president is important in advancing our historic and dynamic cooperation, mutual respect and shared strategic interests,' the Philippine leader said. Relief efforts Moreover, Marcos thanked the US government for its assistance to the Philippines in relief efforts as most parts of the country are affected by the heavy downpour and flooding due to the Southwest Monsoon. 'Finally, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the US government and its people, not only for their warm hospitality during my short visit, but also for extending support to our response efforts in aiding communities and areas affected by the Southwest Monsoon,' he said. 'Sa gitna ng kalidad, inuuna ng inyong pamahalaan ang kaligtasan, kalusugan at kapakanan ng bawat Pilipino. Patuloy ang ating pagtugon sa epekto ng malakas na pag-ulan at pagbaha dulot ng Habagat sa iba't-ibang panig ng bansa,' Marcos added. (In the middle of calamity, your government prioritizes the safety, health and welfare of every Filipino. Our efforts to respond to the heavy rain and flooding caused by the Habagat in different parts of the country will continue.) — RF, GMA Integrated News

DigiPlus says total online gambling ban risks thousands of jobs

DigiPlus Interactive Corporation—the company behind popular online games BingoPlus, ArenaPlus, and GameZone— on Wednesday reiterated its appeal to lawmakers to reconsider plans to legislate a total ban on online gambling, warning of massive job losses across the industry. In a statement, DigiPlus chairman Eusebio Tanco said the digital entertainment company is 'open to evolving and improving wherever needed.' 'If there are new standards to meet, or better ways to protect players, we will act swiftly and responsibly. But please, do not condemn an industry, and the 50,000 Filipino families who rely on it, without hearing the facts first,' Tanco said. Lawmakers have proposed a ban on online gambling, arguing that tighter industry regulations as proposed by some of their other colleagues would not be enough. The Department of Health said online gambling is a health issue. President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. said he will be studying the issue, including online gambling's possible effects on Filipinos' health and the economy. The DigiPlus chairman said the consequences of a total ban on online gambling 'go far beyond corporate risk.' 'More than 3,000 direct DigiPlus employees, and an estimated 50,000 jobs across the online gaming industry's nationwide network, including those in information technology, cybersecurity, software development, as well as multimedia artists, call center agents, security personnel, and housekeeping staff are now at risk,' he said. He added that banning licensed operators will not make online gaming go away, repeating his earlier assertion that a ban 'will only drive players toward illegal, unregulated sites with no safeguards.' Tanco expressed concern that responsible and law-abiding operators are 'being swept into a tide of suspicion meant to catch those who have never complied with regulation in the first place.' The DigiPlus chairman said the company 'has always done its best to align its operations with regulatory expectations from PAGCOR and other relevant government agencies.' 'Tell us what more we must do. And we will do it without hesitation. Just grant us the fairness owed to any lawful Filipino enterprise. We stand licensed, audited, and transparent, yet we are made to answer for the crimes of illegal operators who respect neither law nor livelihood,' Tanco said. 'We are appealing to the government: Let us approach this rationally. If we study the issue with clear eyes, we will see that the social ills being blamed on online gaming stem from the illegal market. That is where underage gambling happens. That is where financial abuse thrives. Target that, and the harm disappears,' he said. Tanco said that the company and the licensed gaming operators 'are not asking for special treatment,' but are 'simply asking to be judged by our actions, not by perception, nor by association with those who break the law.' 'Regulation works best when it uplifts what is working, not when it dismantles it,' he said. — Ted Cordero/BM, GMA Integrated News
