Packers hit on top draft value picks at QB, WR and OT over last 25 years

USA Today26-06-2025
With the 2025 season coming up, Eric Edholm of NFL.com is going through each position to determine the top "draft values" of the last 25 years. Unknowingly, Edholm provided the perfect opportunity to appreciate late great Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson, who hit on generational values at quarterback, wide receiver and along the offensive line.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Thompson's first draft pick and the 24th overall pick in 2005, was Edholm's No. 2 value pick at quarterback behind Tom Brady.
Wide receiver Davante Adams, one of Thompson's best late-career picks and the 53rd overall pick in 2017, was Edholm's No. 4 value pick at wide receiver.
Offensive tackle David Bakhtiari, Thompson's best Day 3 pick by a mile and the 109th overall pick in 2013, was Edholm's No. 4 value pick along the offensive line.
Thompson picking Rodgers helped win the Packers a Super Bowl and opened up another long winning window, while Adams and Bakhtiari were both elite players at their respective positions during Rodgers' window.
Only four quarterbacks have thrown more regular-season touchdown passes than Rodgers, who will almost certainly pass Brett Favre at some point during the 2025 season. Adams has the third-most catches by a player drafted in the second round in NFL history, trailing only Anquan Boldin and Isaac Bruce, and Adams could easily catch both by the time he retires. Bakhtiari ranks third by PFR's "Approximate Value" among all offensive linemen and second among offensive tackles drafted in the fourth round all-time.
Rodgers will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer when he retires, Adams has a very strong Hall of Fame case as he enters his 12th NFL season and Bakhtiari was on a sure-fire Hall of Fame path when his knee suffered catastrophic damage on New Year's Eve of 2020.
It's fair to wonder "what could have been" with a few other Thompson draft picks. Nick Collins (second round, No. 51 overall) might have built a Hall of Fame career had he not injured his neck in 2011. Jermichael Finley (third round, No. 91 overall) was a dominant receiving tight end who also had his career ended by a neck injury. Thompson also picked Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson in the second round, Clay Matthews and Kenny Clark at the end of the first round, Josh Sitton in the fourth round, Corey Linsley in the fifth round and Mason Crosby in the sixth round.
So much success of the last Packers era is due to Thompson's drafting ability. His hits on generational talents -- a Hall of Fame quarterback late in the first, a potential Hall of Fame receiver midway through the second and a borderline Hall of Fame left tackle in the fourth -- paved the way for a dominant Packers run.

Pittsburgh Steelers fans soak in the excitement at annual Friday Night Lights practice

The energy was electric when the Steelers showed up to Latrobe Memorial Stadium for their annual Friday Night practice under the lights. 'Just the atmosphere,' said Jason Stone of Uniontown, attending his third Friday Night Lights. 'The people the crowd, the noise, you can't get anything better than being here! Friday Night Lights!' Fans told Channel 11's Andrew Havranek they look forward to this practice all summer. They said there's just something special about seeing the pros up close, and getting their autographs. This year, a highly coveted autograph was that of the four-time NFL MVP Quarterback Aaron Rodgers. 'I've gotten Aaron Rodgers, [Spencer] Anderson, Pat Friermuth, that was awesome!' said Lexi Thurston of Chesterfield, Virginia. '[Rodgers is] an absolute legend like you can't get any better than that. It's like crazy it made me freak out, I didn't know what to do.' 'I'm hoping he leads us to the Super Bowl, obviously getting him that last one before he retires,' said Landon Thomas of Lancaster, Ohio. Before practice started Channel 11's Andrew Havranek caught up with fan who shares the Aaron Rodgers name. Of course, her first name is spelled a bit differently, but it's still caused her some hardships, especially after Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers beat the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV. 'Growing up I always got name like, all kinds of jokes about me, when I go into restaurants, everyone thinks I'm joking most of the time, they're like 'you're Erin Rodgers?'' she said. Now, she's just hoping that since Aaron Rodgers is in the black and gold, she won't be booed anymore. 'It makes it a lot better instead of it being kind of an exciting but also booing me it will be more an all around 100% good because now I can outwardly support him and not be shunned,' Rodgers said. And as for that Rodgers Packers jersey she owns? 'Are you going to be replacing that with a Steelers' Rodgers jersey?' Havranek asked. 'I am considering it,' Rodgers said. The updated Deion Sanders Hall of Fame "upper room"

The answer to the overcrowding of the Hall of Fame isn't to raise the bar on the fly. It's to build an upper room. Changes to the voting process, spurred by concerns that too many get in, resulted in a lighter-than-usual class of four new members in 2025. It's the smallest class since 2004. And while a thicker filter could indeed be the new normal, the impact of limited membership will impact the bottom line for Canton's annual spotlight weekend. Why not instead create a brighter spotlight for the all-time, no-brainer, absolute best of the absolute best? Deion Sanders made the argument in 2022. In 2023, we took a crack at crafting a proposed upper room. Here's the current version, which adds Devin Hester as the upper-room return specialist. The standard is simple. You know them when you see them. Here's our list, by position. The actual list, if they ever make one, would be crafted by the Hall of Famers. They alone know the names of the men who deserve a special place among their ranks. Quarterback: Sammy Baugh, John Elway, Brett Favre, Otto Graham, Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Johnny Unitas. Running back: Jim Brown, Earl Campbell, Eric Dickerson, Marion Motley, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith. Receiver: Marvin Harrison, Don Hutson, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Jerry Rice. Tight end: Mike Ditka, Tony Gonzalez, John Mackey, Kellen Winslow. Tackle: Walter Jones, Anthony Muñoz, Jonathan Ogden, Art Shell, Joe Thomas. Guard: Larry Allen, Randall McDaniel, Gene Upshaw. Center: Jim Otto, Mike Webster. Defensive end: Deacon Jones, Gino Marchetti, Bruce Smith, Reggie White, Jack Youngblood. Defensive tackle: Joe Greene, Bob Lilly, Alan Page, John Randle, Randy White. Outside linebacker: Chuck Bednarik, Bobby Bell, Derrick Brooks, Jack Ham, Lawrence Taylor, Derrick Thomas. Middle linebacker: Dick Butkus, Jack Lambert, Willie Lanier, Ray Lewis, Junior Seau. Cornerback: Mel Blount, Willie Brown, Darrell Green, Dick "Night Train" Lane, Darrelle Revis, Deion Sanders, Rod Woodson. Safety: Ken Houston, Ronnie Lott, Troy Polamalu, Ed Reed. Kicker: Jan Stenerud. Punter: Ray Guy. Return specialist: Devin Hester. Coach: Paul Brown, Tom Landry, Vince Lombardi, Chuck Noll, Don Shula, Bill Walsh. Owner: Al Davis, George Halas, Lamar Hunt, Art Rooney Sr. That's our rough guess at who would make it. To officially do it, put Deion in charge and add a few other no-brainer selections, like Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, and Barry Sanders, and let them figure it out. It's not a slight to those who merit enshrinement. It's a way to acknowledge those who have earned something more than the gold jacket and the bronze bust.
