Turkey arrests dozens including opposition party members
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office issued detention orders for 47 people and detained 30. Others detained included local municipal mayors and Istanbul officials.
The operation is the fifth wave of arrests against the government's political opponents, starting with the jailing of Istanbul's mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, regarded as President Tayyip Erdogan's main rival in March.
Turkey's government has rejected claims of political interference, insisting the judiciary is independent.
Imamoglu sent a letter from prison to an opposition rally on Saturday, saying: "It is time to say "enough is enough" to this unjust and unlawful order."
"Now you are taking our district mayors with fictitious excuses. What will you do? Where will you stop? Are you going to throw 16 million Istanbulites in jail one by one?" he said in the letter.
Imamoglu is part of the Republican People's Party (CHP), who have been leading in many polls against Erdogan's Justice and Development Party.
He was jailed over charges of corruption and aiding a terrorist group. He has denied all charges.
His arrest triggered mass protests and arrests across Turkey. The Istanbul prosecutor's office has said 819 people arrested in protests will be tried in 20 criminal investigations.
Some 110 people were arrested in the first four waves of arrests under corruption allegations.
The fifth wave on Saturday consisted of four different operations in two cities. Municipal mayors, CHP party members and city officials were among those arrested.
CHP Party Assembly member Baki Aydöner wrote on X that he was in Ankara for a party meeting when his wife called and told him that the house was searched and there was a detention order against him. He said he was going to Istanbul.
The UN's human rights office said in March it was "very concerned" at the mass arrests, with Amnesty International at the time calling the detentions "draconian actions".

ISTANBUL (Reuters) -A Turkish court on Tuesday ruled the mayor of the southern city of Adana should be held in jail pending trial on corruption charges, broadcaster NTV reported, as a legal crackdown on the main opposition continues. Adana Mayor Zeydan Karalar was detained on Saturday as part of a corruption probe into opposition-run municipalities, which has expanded dramatically from its roots in Istanbul. In March, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, President Tayyip Erdogan's main political rival, was also jailed pending trial over corruption charges. As part of the widening crackdown, a separate court ruled to put under house arrest, pending trial, the mayor of the southern city of Adiyaman, Abdurrahman Tutdere. The mayor of the district of Manavgat in the southern resort province of Antalya was also jailed pending trial over suspected bribery and corruption charges. The Interior Ministry later said the mayor had been suspended from his duty over the arrest. All the mayors, from the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), have denied the charges against them. The CHP, some Western countries and rights groups have called the arrests part of a politicised attempt by the government to remove electoral threats against Erdogan. Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavas, also from the CHP, said after the arrest of Karalar that the mayor's arrest was "part of different calculations" and not a sound legal process. "We are not against prosecution. However, we want a fair, independent and unbiased prosecution. Because the law does not bend or twist according to the time or politics," he said on X. The government denies influencing the judiciary and says the courts operate independently to investigate a ring of corruption at the municipalities.

1 dead, multiple injured in crash on Hwy 65: CHP

(KGET) — One person is dead and multiple are injured after a crash on Highway 65 Sunday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol. Officers with CHP were dispatched to the area of Highway 65 near Minneola Avenue for the report of a two-vehicle crash around 7:23 p.m. Investigation showed a 2013 Toyota Sienna was driving southbound on Highway 65 at an unknown rate of speed. A 2005 Ford F-350 was pulling a two-axle trailer on southbound Highway 65 in front of the Toyota at an unknown speed. CHP issues Silver Alert for missing 80-year-old man For reasons unknown, the Toyota entered the northbound lane in front of oncoming traffic, according to the highway patrol. The driver of the Toyota then veered into the southbound lane and the Toyota and Ford collided. Highway patrol officials said the driver of the Toyota lost control and overturned. The passenger of the vehicle was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver in the Toyota and two other passengers were injured and transported to the hospital for moderate to major injuries, according to officials. Erdogan, pro-Kurdish MPs meet in 'new phase' of rapprochement
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met lawmakers from the pro-Kurdish DEM party Monday to discuss the next steps after PKK militants agreed to end their decades-long insurgency. DEM, Turkey's third-biggest party, has played a key role in facilitating an emerging peace deal between the government and jailed PKK founder Abdullah Ocalan, whose Kurdish militant group is expected to begin laying down its weapons later this week. The meeting, which lasted just over an hour, brought together Erdogan, Efkan Ala, a senior figure in his ruling AKP, and spy chief Ibrahim Kalin with DEM lawmakers Pervin Buldan and Mithat Sancar. "Our delegation conveyed their views and suggestions on the new stage the process has reached and what to do next," the DEM lawmakers said in a brief statement after the talks. DEM lawmaker Buldan called the meeting "historic". "The process is now entering a new phase in which consultations are needed," she told reporters before the meeting. "It is important to consult to take the necessary steps," she added, saying the sides would "exchange views". Fellow DEM lawmaker Mithat Sancar said the new phase was "very important" and that they would use the meeting to "share our views" and to "listen to them". On Sunday, the pair held a "very productive" meeting with Ocalan on Imrali prison island. The jailed 76-year-old PKK founder also characterised the upcoming talks with Erdogan as "historic". He told them a parliamentary commission being set up would "play a major role" in directing the peace process. The meeting came as the PKK was to hold a ceremony in Iraqi Kurdistan to start destroying a first tranche of weapons -- which will likely take place on or around July 10-12.
