The Karnataka High Court on Thursday ordered interim release of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) marketing head Nikhil Sosale and three others arrested in connection with the June 4 stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which claimed 11 lives, news agency PTI reported.
The other accused, Sunil Mathew, Kiran Kumar S, and Shamant N P Mavinakere, are officials from DNA Entertainment Networks Pvt Ltd, the event management company that organised the victory celebration for RCB's maiden IPL title win.
Justice S R Krishna Kumar, who heard arguments on June 11, passed the order while directing all four to surrender their passports.
The four were arrested on June 6 and were in judicial custody. On June 9, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) produced them before a magistrate court seeking nine days' custody, but the court deferred the decision pending the High Court's verdict.

On Tuesday, the Karnataka Criminal Investigation Department (CID) withdrew its request for the custodial interrogation of four individuals linked to the stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, Indian Express reported.
The CID had initially sought nine days' custody of the accused to investigate lapses in planning and crowd control at the event. However, the move was challenged by senior advocate Sandesh Chouta, representing RCB's Head of Marketing, Nikhil Sosale, who pointed out that the matter was already under consideration by the High Court.
The magistrate hearing the case also questioned the urgency of the CID's request, asking what could be achieved in just one day of custody before the High Court's verdict was expected. CID's Assistant Superintendent of Police, Jagadeesh, defended the need for interrogation, citing its relevance to investigating how the tragedy unfolded, the report added.

CID takes over probe into Biklu's murder

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has officially taken over the investigation into the murder of 40-year-old Shivakumar alias Biklu Shiva, with Bharathi Nagar BJP MLA Byrathi Basavaraj named as one of the accused, officials familiar with the development said on Sunday. Shiva, alleged to be a criminal, was killed on July 15 near his home on Meanee Avenue Road in east Bengaluru's Bharathinagar The case, which has triggered allegations of political involvement and police lapses, was transferred to the CID on the orders of director general of police (DGP) MA Saleem, officials said. Shiva, alleged to be a criminal, was killed on July 15 near his home on Meanee Avenue Road in east Bengaluru's Bharathinagar. He was hacked to death by eight assailants armed with sharp weapons, who arrived in a Scorpio SUV and a two-wheeler. Days after the killing, five people surrendered to the police, and 11 others have since been arrested, taking the total number of accused to 16. 'The CID's Homicide and Burglary Wing will now investigate the case. Deputy superintendent of police Umesh is leading the CID team, and formal transfer of case files from the local police took place on Sunday,' said an officer in the know. The officer added that the decision to hand over the case to CID was influenced by the alleged involvement of influential individuals and growing concerns over police impartiality. The main accused, Jagadish alias Jagga, an alleged repeat offender, remains absconding. CCTV footage from a hotel in Ramamurthy Nagar captured him with co-accused hours before the murder. He was later seen leaving his residence in Hennur around 8.15 pm, just 15 minutes after the fatal attack. According to investigators, Jagga might have fled the country, prompting a lookout notice. Despite multiple criminal cases against him in Indiranagar, JB Nagar, JP Nagar, and KR Puram, Jagga had recently been removed from the rowdy-sheeter list. Among those arrested are Kiran, Pradeep, Vimal Raj, Madan, Samuel, Arun, Naveen, Murugesh, Narasimha, Sudarshan, Avinash, Shivu, Prasad, Manoj, Patrick, and another person named Kiran. According to an officer, rowdy sheets have been opened against nine of them by Bharathi Nagar police. Hanumanthu, personal assistant to MLA Byrathi Basavaraj, has been served a notice and named as the fifth accused. Police say he was in contact with several of the accused on the night of the murder. Shivakumar's mother, who filed the initial complaint, alleged that her son was murdered over a property dispute and directly named MLA Basavaraj as the person who instigated the attack. She claimed her son had obtained a general power of attorney (GPA) in 2023, after which he began receiving threats. The MLA has denied all charges and stated that he is cooperating fully with the investigation. Basavaraj has been questioned twice. Allegations have also surfaced suggesting some of the accused maintained contact with police officials before and after the murder. There are claims of preferential treatment, brutality, and lapses in the initial stages of the investigation, which the police have denied. Before the CID took over, KG Halli assistant commissioner of police Prakash Rathod was named as the investigation officer. However, the state police headquarters later decided to shift the probe to CID.

Non-compliance in compassionate appt: HC issues contempt to police officials

Raipur: The Chhattisgarh High Court issued contempt notices to DIG Parul Mathur and Janjgir-Champa SP Vijay Pandey for failing to comply with its order to provide a compassionate appointment to the son of late ASI Boond Ram Bharti within 90 days. Bharti was compulsorily retired in 2017, but after his death, his service was reinstated following a High Court directive. The delay in implementing the court's order prompted a contempt petition, highlighting the broader issue of over 1,100 such petitions filed this year due to non-compliance by authorities. The case involves the late Boond Ram Bharti, who was compulsorily retired from service as an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) by DIG (Administration), Raipur, on 18 Aug 2017. Following his death, the Home secretary cancelled the compulsory retirement order, making his dependents eligible for compassionate appointment, as per a High Court order. However, despite the High Court's directive to provide a compassionate appointment within 90 days, Vikki Bharti, son of Boond Ram Bharti, has not yet received the appointment in the police department. Counsels Abhishek Pandey and Priya Agrawal filed a contempt petition in the High Court. They informed the court that senior police officers are failing to comply with court orders within the stipulated timeframe. This non-compliance resulted in 1,149 contempt petitions being filed between Jan and July this year, consuming valuable court time. The counsels cited provisions for six months imprisonment and Rs 2,000 fine in contempt cases. The counsels sought action against the DIG and SP under Section 12 of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971. Taking serious note of the matter, the High Court issued notices to the senior police officers, seeking their replies. Clarifying the restoration of Boond Ram Bharti's service after his death, counsel Pandey said that many govt employees over the age of 50 were compulsorily retired under a govt scheme following an assessment of their performance and alleged poor service records. Boond Ram, along with several other affected employees, challenged the compulsory retirement orders in the High Court. In response, a committee was constituted to review the cases in accordance with the court's directive. The committee subsequently recommended the reinstatement of several employees, including Boond Ram Bharti. However, in the interim, Boond Ram passed away, and his service was reinstated 21 days after his death, the counsel informed the court.

IPL 2026: Nitish Kumar Reddy Breaks Silence On His Future With Sunrisers Hyderabad Amid Trade Rumours

India all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has broken silence on his future with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) amid the trade rumours. According to a report from India Today, Nitish had expressed his desire to leave SRH over his role in the team, especially after being pushed down the batting order. However, the 22-year-old all-rounder on Sunday took to social media to issue clarification, saying that he will always stand by his current IPL team. "I tend to stay away from the noise, but some things deserve clarity. My connection with SRH is built on trust, respect, and years of shared passion. I'll always stand by this team," wrote Reddy on his 'X' account. Ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction, Visakhapatnam-based Reddy was retained by SRH at Rs six crore. It came after Reddy amassed 303 runs in 13 matches and also took three wickets in IPL 2024, which paved his way for selection into India T20I and Test teams. But Reddy failed to repeat his heroics in IPL 2025 - scoring only 182 runs in 13 games and didn't bowl a lot of overs due to his recovery from a side strain which kept him out of action after the first T20I against England earlier this year.
