KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian semiconductor designer SkyeChip Sdn Bhd is 'close' to an initial public offering (IPO) after posting consecutive years of revenue and profit growth, says chief executive officer Fong Swee Kiang.
The company, founded in 2019, has seen '30% revenue growth every year, and a 30% net profit margin,' Fong said in an interview on the sidelines of a Kuala Lumpur investment conference.
'We are on track' for profitability, he said. The company is targeting a price that would value it at more than RM1bil, Bloomberg News reported in March.
Fong, a former Silicon Valley executive who co-founded SkyeChip to tap into the explosion in artificial intelligence, said the focus of the Gobi Partners-backed firm is to create specialised chips to complement those of companies such as Nvidia Corp.
An IPO was 'always the plan from day one,' Fong said, without providing further details of the company's planned share sale. SkyeChip's customers are all based in the United States, he said.
Fong does not think potential US tariffs on Malaysian products will affect his business much as long as the duties are comparatively low with those of other countries.
Earlier this year, Arm Holdings PLC agreed to provide chip designs and technology to Malaysia to boost the sophistication of the nation's semiconductor industry. — Bloomberg

PM Anwar meets with Italian industry leaders on his second day in Europe

ROME: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim began his second working day in Italy with one-on-one business discussions with top leaders from strategic sectors such as defence and energy. The meetings with Fincantieri and Leonardo, two major Italian defence firms that participated in the recent Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA), have opened doors to long-term ventures. "I stressed the importance of a government-to-government approach to strengthen Malaysia's role as a hub in maintenance, repair, and operations," Anwar said on Thursday (July 2). He emphasised that the session was crucial in maintaining Malaysia's position as a stable and reliable investment destination. Anwar met with Fincantieri CEO Pierroberto Folgiero, Leonardo senior marketing and strategic campaign VP Tomasso Pani, and ENI CEO Claudio Descalzi, along with PETRONAS president and Group CEO Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Kamadjaja Aziz. During an interactive session moderated by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, several Italian company representatives expressed their reasons for investing in Malaysia. One noted that the Asian nation is financially stable and its people are easy to work with. "We have worked with major entities like Abu Dhabi and several cities in China, but Malaysia is almost perfect. It is a hub of the South Pacific region and as a country, developed to a very advanced level," he said. Most participants praised the Malaysian government's efforts in creating a reliable environment for trade.

PTPTN allocates RM47.8m advance loans for July 2025 intake

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) has allocated RM47.8 million in Loan Advance Payment (WPP) to 31,850 students enrolling in diploma programmes at public universities and polytechnics for the July 2025 intake. Each eligible student will receive RM1,500 to cover initial preparation costs, ensuring financial support as they begin their higher education journey. The WPP is available to Malaysian students who opted for the advance loan during their application via UPUOnline or official admission portals. Eligibility is also tied to parents or guardians receiving the government's Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) aid. Since its launch in 1999, WPP has assisted 990,638 students with total disbursements reaching RM1.46 billion as of May 31 this year. PTPTN, under the Higher Education Ministry (MOHE), continues its commitment to facilitating access to tertiary education. Students can verify their WPP offer through the myPTPTN app and claim the funds at any Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd (BIMB) branch until September 1. They must present their WPP offer letter and MyKad, with no proxy redemptions allowed. PTPTN chairperson Datuk Seri Norliza Abdul Rahim visited WPP recipients in Bukit Gelugor, Penang, where 1,419 students received RM2.13 million in aid. She urged students to use the funds wisely and apply for full PTPTN loans according to their institution's timeline. Applicants must also open a National Education Savings Scheme (Simpan SSPN) account via the app before submitting their loan applications.

Ministry gets stricter on plastic waste import, SIRIM appointed sole inspection body

KUALA LUMPUR: Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry has imposed stricter controls on the import of plastic waste into Malaysia effective from July 1. Under the new directive, the ministry's agency SIRIM has been appointed as the sole inspection body and certificate of approval (COA) issuer for all waste plastic imports. "Malaysia is open to issuing COA for the import of waste plastic provided the importers fulfil all conditions under Malaysian laws and the exporters belong to or originate from countries that have signed and ratified the basel convention," the ministry said in a statement. The ministry said importers wishing to import waste plastic may refer to SIRIM's guidelines for the Importation and Inspection of Waste Plastic at its website. "Malaysia will not hesitate to act firmly against any individual or company that attempts to circumvent waste import controls or engage in illicit waste import activities. "The ministry remains committed to facilitating a legitimate, responsible and eco-friendly trade environment to support Malaysia's sustainable socio-economic goals, while aligning with international best practices and multilaterally agreed global commitments on safeguarding the environment," it added.
