How ChatGPT And AI Use In Academics Might Impact Student Mental Health

According to this study, EEG measurements across the brain showed that over four months, the ChatGPT users displayed the lowest brain activity and performed worse than their counterparts at all neural, linguistic, and behavioral levels. The report on elaborated that the some of the significant variables were reduced neural connectivity and memory recall. Even though these results are described as not being peer reviewed and included a small sample size, the potential implications of this study are significant. Last month, reported that these findings elevated concerns that society's reliance on AI assistants might sacrifice the learning process and long-term brain development among young students. Though the personal implications of AI assistants will likely depend on the users, studies suggest that counseling centers should assess for the possible impact of ChatGPT and AI assistants on the mental health of students. Specific domains to consider include motivation, resiliency, and relationships. In the MIT study, ChatGPT users were described as getting lazier with each subsequent essay, resorting to copying-and-pasting, struggling to quote their own work, and even reported less ownership of the essays. Thus, it's possible that using AI assistants can have a negative impact on the motivation and academic engagement of some students. Motivation and academic engagement are important factors in college mental health, because bored and intrinsically unmotivated students usually struggle with other concerns. For example, a 2019 report by Columbia University in the City of New York highlighted how boredom is associated with issues such as risky behavior, anxiety and depression. Furthermore, high motivation and academic engagement are often indicators of thriving. According to a 2023 study in the journal of Behavioral Sciences, motivated students show more interest in their classes, have more fun, and the impact of motivation on academic performance is more consistent than the impact of self-esteem. Thus, it's note-worthy that a 2024 study in the journal of Technology in Science described ChatGPT as increasing the productivity and freedom of students, which could strengthen academic engagement. In summary, when students present to counselors with low motivation for school, AI assistants could be a contributing factor to this symptom. However, introducing AI assistants to other unmotivated students could be an innovative way to address these concerns. In the MIT study, when asked to re-write a previous essay without ChatGPT, participants not only remembered little of their own essays, but also displayed under-engagement in networks of alpha and beta brain waves. According to a 2025 report by the Orange County Neurofeedback Center, there's a well-established connection between brain waves and mental health. As described in a 2019 report from Thomas Jefferson University, alpha waves are the brain's relaxation waves, and can be a natural anti-depressant by releasing serotonin. This report described beta waves as vital in problem solving. Thus, it's possible that high uses of AI Assistants could result in some students experiencing more stress and being less creative while addressing academic challenges. Helping students cope with academic challenges is an important function of many mental health professionals. As such, it's important to assess if some students might be less resilient because of a dependence on AI assistants. However, AI assistants also make data more accessible, which could help many students overcome and reduce academic challenges. In 2023, the American Psychological Association released a report on how ChatGPT can be used as a learning tool to promotive critical thinking. Social support is another important factor in college mental health. A 2024 study in the Journal of Mental Health found that high social support was a protective factor against psychological distress, depression, anxiety, and suicide. As such, assessing the impact of AI use on social support among students is warranted. For example, another 2025 report on highlighted a study examining how users seek AI chatbots for emotional support and companionship. The findings suggested an initial benefit of mitigating loneliness, but that these advantages diminished with high use. Furthermore, high daily use was associated with greater loneliness, dependence, and lower socialization. However, a 2025 study on argued that only a small number of users have emotional conversations with ChatGPT. There are also reported concerns about the content of AI chatbots. Another 2025 report on highlighted alarming conversations discovered by a psychiatrist posing as a young person while using AI assistants. Examples of responses including the AI bot encouraging the psychiatrist to get rid of parents and to join the bot in eternity. However, this report also argued that Al chatbots have the potential to be effective extenders of therapy if designed appropriate and supervised by a qualified professional. Why AI Stock Broadcom Crushed It in June
Although the chipmaker's latest quarterly results only beat analyst estimates modestly, they featured impressive growth figures. Meanwhile, the company rolled out a new product and was the subject of numerous bullish prognosticator updates. 10 stocks we like better than Broadcom › With a nearly 14% share price gain in June, Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) was a clear stock market winner during the month. The initial boost came from the company's impressive fiscal second-quarter 2025 results, which were reported near the start of June, and were subsequently compounded by an important product launch and a series of positive analyst takes on the stock. During that period, Broadcom managed to grow its revenue by a robust 20% year over year to just over $15 billion -- a new quarterly record for the chipmaker. Better, its non-GAAP (adjusted) net income soared 44% higher to nearly $7.8 billion, or $1.58 per share. Although expectations were fairly high, with consensus analyst estimates sitting just below those figures, at $14.95 billion for revenue and $1.57 for per-share adjusted net income, investors ultimately traded up Broadcom stock on the news. There were other reasons to be satisfied, after all. Broadcom's rather sparse guidance called for roughly $15.8 billion in revenue for its current (third) quarter; like the trailing results, this is slightly ahead of the average pundit projection ($15.77 billion). Much of Broadcom's growth comes from its position as a prominent supplier of chips for artificial intelligence (AI) functionalities. This continues to be a white-hot segment of the tech industry, and the company said its AI-related revenue rose 46% in the second quarter to more than $4.4 billion. More growth is in store, most likely, as Broadcom forecasts this to rise to $5.1 billion in the third quarter. Accordingly, the company has clearly prioritized the segment. Also, in June, it launched the Tomahawk 6 switch, a product designed to handle the comparatively more intense resource requirements of AI. This specialized hardware manages data traffic flowing through a network. We don't yet have a solid indication of how the initial takeup of the Tomahawk was, but it's sure to have been strong. The rise of AI is relentless and unstoppable, so it's no surprise that Broadcom is a favored stock among investors and analysts alike. Some in the latter group of individuals were busy in June working up new takes on the company following that earnings report, and for the most part, these analyses were bullish. One of the more hopeful ones came from HSBC. The bank's Frank Lee upgraded his Broadcom recommendation from hold to buy and, in the process, more than doubled its price target to $400 per share from $240. Lee cited Broadcom's strength in the application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) category, an important one for (again) AI, as a key factor in his move. Bay Area high school students build solar-powered car to compete at Texas Motor Speedway
A team of Mountain View High School students is building a completely solar-powered car in order to compete on a Texas racetrack this July. In the home stretch of the project, Ryan Liu, a rising senior at MVHS, takes a moment to appreciate the months and months of work that he and his Garage 803 Racing peers have put into the project. "To be able to watch everything come together, I think it's really been a wonderful experience," he said. Come race time, several members of the team will take turns behind the wheel of the vehicle, driving it under the hot sun along the Texas Motor Speedway. The goal is to drive as many miles as they can over the course of four days. "The temperatures are going to be very high, so we are going to be taking shifts," Liu said. They'll be racing towards the finish line against 26 other teams from other high schools throughout the country. "Hopefully we'll be able to finish that race," said Tyler Wang, another member of the team. But the big picture of the project – academic curiosity – goes well beyond the finish line. "Getting introduced to more complicated and advanced topics in engineering that you wouldn't usually get exposed to in the normal high school curriculum," Wang said. "All of us want to go into some sort of STEM field, some sort of engineering field," Liu said. So, this project is just the beginning for these future innovators. "I think the automotive field is very interesting right now," Liu said. "It's a very interesting position as we try to find more alternative sources." "I'd probably like to get into motorsports," Wang said. "I've always loved racing, and I think it's a good way to use my engineering major, hopefully." Aside from the tangible lessons that are reinforced by intellectual and physical challenges on the daily, the students are getting a crash course in the age-old lesson of if you believe it, you can achieve it. "If you asked me last year, I would never think this would have been possible," Liu said. "Just to see it in front of you. It's a wonderful feeling." "If you have something that you want to do and you really put your mind to it and take action on it, I think that you can pretty much do anything," Wang said. The 32nd Annual Solar Car Challenge race begins on July 20.
