James Gunn's DCU Hit With First Major Setback, And It Involves Colin Farrell And Sgt. Rock
Colin Farrell already has more than enough DC Comics media cred from his Golden Globe-winning performance as Oz Cobb in The Penguin, but in the last few month, we've learned he's been making moves to join the new DC Universe franchise. Back in March, it was reported that Farrell was on deck to replace Daniel Craig in Sgt. Rock. However, word's now come in that this upcoming DC movie is no longer moving forward, which arguably marks the first major setback for the James Gunn-spearheaded DCU.
This update comes to us from The Wrap, which reports that Sgt. Rock is no longer set to film this summer in England. No specific reasoning was officially provided for why the shoot has been scrapped, though one insider who spoke with THR said the publication stated that it 'came down to the project's scheduling needs of shooting outdoors.' Another insider claimed that there was concern from the DC brass about director Luca Guadagnino's ability to tackle an action-heavy movie like this.
Although the DC Universe certainly hasn't faced challenges since James Gunn and Peter Safran, who run DC Studios together, announced the franchise in early 2023, this is the first time one of its projects has been outright cancelled. That being said, there is a little glimmer of hope. The article mentions that Sgt. Rock would be 're-assessed' at the end of this year and potentially get back off the ground for a summer 2026 shoot.
Otherwise, this version of Sgt. Rock has been set aside. Even if the 2026 shoot happens, there's no guarantee that Colin Farrell and/or Luca Guadagnino would still be able to work on it. If Sgt. Rock ends up being revived, I wouldn't be surprised if a new director and lead actor are tapped to replace them. Who knows, maybe this could be how Jeremy Allen White actually gets involved.
THR's report mentioned that Sgt. Rock was early on into the casting process before the shutdown occurred. Just like in the comics. Colin Farrell's version of the title character was going to lead the combat unit Easy Company to bring the hurt to Nazis during World War II. Mike Faist, who worked with Luca Guadagnino on Challengers, was reportedly being lined up for a role. The publication's sources also said there would be a female French Resistance fighter as a major character.
The good news is that even with Sgt. Rock being put on ice, there's still a way to see him and Easy Company in action in the DC Universe. The soldiers appeared in the third episode of Creature Commandos Season 1, which can be streamed with a Max subscription. As far as the wider DC Universe goes, Superman kicks off the cinematic side of the franchise on July 11, and then Peacemaker Season 2 hits the 2025 TV schedule in August.

I absolutely had to do this play,' Anderson recently told Town & Country. The projects couldn't be more different in tone. In The Naked Gun — an update of the 1988 slapstick comedy starring Leslie Nielsen as L.A. Police Squat lieutenant Frank Drebin — she plays Beth Davenport, a femme fatale who gets involved with Drebin's son Frank Jr. (Liam Neeson, with whom Anderson has struck up a romance, a source confirmed to PEOPLE on Tuesday, July 29.) According to a description of the surreal play Camino Real on the festival's website, "The Camino Real is a dead end, a police state in an imagined Latin-Mediterranean-American country, and an inescapable condition. Characters from history and literature such as Don Quixote, Casanova, and Camille inhabit this phantasmagoric plaza where corruption and alienation have nearly destroyed the human spirit. Enter Kilroy, a prize-winning boxer and all-American fella with 'a heart as big as the head of a baby.'" Nicholas Alexander Chavez, from the Netflix series Monsters: The Lyle & Erik Menendez Story, stars as Kilroy, while Anderson plays Marguerite Gaultier (a courtesan and character originally from Alexandre Dumas's novel The Lady of the Camellias). The star of The Last Showgirl told Town & Country her 2022 stint as murderous housewife Roxie Hart on the Great White Way inspired her to continue stage work. 'I loved being on Broadway playing Roxie in Chicago, and I didn't know if I'd get another chance,' she said. Her role in Camino Real wraps up with a final performance on Sunday, Aug. 3, but Anderson seems interested in performing live in the future. "There are so many characters I want to play that I would never have thought about back in my twenties, but I feel like in this part of my life, I can play them with hindsight, wisdom, and knowledge," she told Town & Country. DC Fans Point Out Potential Plot Hole In ‘Superman'
James Gunn's Superman has officially kicked off the DC Universe. The new big screen adaptation of the popular superhero stars David Corenswet as the titular character – while Nicholas Hoult plays his nemesis, Lex Luthor. While the film has been well-received by most fans and critics, there are some DC fans who have pointed out a potential plot hole in Superman . For those who've seen the film, we're introduced to Superman's Fortress of Solitude quite early on, a home base for the character ran by androids and numerous secrets regarding the character's history. This is why Lex Luthor and his team including The Engineer make their way to the fortress in an effort to find any dirt they can on Superman. It just so happens that The Engineer locates a video of Superman's parents, one that was damaged upon arrival to Earth, and the second portion is corrupted. The Engineer manages to fix this portion of the footage and discovers that Superman's biological parents weren't as friendly as he believed. This sets up a large portion of the film in which Superman must clear his name while also coming to terms with the fact that his parents didn't have the best interests regarding humanity as he so believed. Eventually, he comes to choose his adoptive parents over them, and the end of the film plays footage of him growing up in Kansas. Now, as you can see below, this is where fans have pointed out the potential plot hole. Fortunately, for whatever reason she doesn't, and Superman's secret identity remains a secret – at least to most. Another fan does suggest this isn't a plot hole for Superman because the videos of his adoptive parents might've only been uploaded after most of the movie takes place, thus the footage wasn't available to begin with for The Engineer to see: It obviously hadn't been uploaded yet. That's kinda the point of the movie.
