Santa Clara extends coach Herb Sendek's contract through 2029-30 season
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Santa Clara basketball coach Herb Sendek signed a contract extension on Monday that will keep him at the school through the 2029-30 season.
Athletic director Heather Owen said she believes Sendek is the right person to lead the Broncos' program.
'I have been impressed with his ability to navigate the ever-changing landscape that is college athletics while remaining true to our Santa Clara values," she said in a statement. "He is one of the best teachers in the game and we are grateful to have him as the leader of our program.'
Sendek was originally hired in 2016 and is set to enter his 10th season at the helm for Santa Clara. He has a 161-120 record for the Broncos and has the fourth most wins in program history.
The Broncos have won at least 20 games in five of the past six seasons, falling short only in the COVID-shortened 20-game campaign in 2020-21. Santa Clara has finished in the top four in the West Coast Conference in four straight seasons.
Sendek has a 574-415 career record at Miami of Ohio, N.C. State, Arizona State and Santa Clara. He has made the NCAA Tournament eight times but is seeking his first appearance with the Broncos.
Santa Clara hasn't made the NCAA Tournament since 1996.

Nix had a surprising and stellar rookie season for the Broncos in 2024 and helped lead the team to the postseason. Last season, Nix threw for 3,775 yards and 29 touchdowns as a rookie. The Broncos closed out the season with a 5-2 record before losing in the AFC Wildcard 31-7 to the Buffalo Bills. Nix played his first three seasons with the Tigers before transferring to Oregon for his final two seasons. While operating a proper offense at Oregon, he showed the NFL his capabilities as a quarterback. He had moments at Auburn but was more consistent in Eugene. Stidham returns to the Broncos for his third season as the backup to Nix. He has played for three different NFL franchises, including the Broncos. Stidham started his career with the New England Patriots before playing for the Raiders. Stidham was tasked with being the guy to replace Tom Brady in New England. The team would sign another former Auburn quarterback, Cam Newton. Stidham would spend his time with the Patriots as a backup. He would be traded to Las Vegas for the 2022 season. Stidham started the final two games of the 2022 season. He had a big game in his first start versus the San Francisco 49ers. In a 37-34 overtime loss, Stidham threw for 365 yards and three touchdowns. He would then become a member of the Broncos starting with the 2023 season. That first season, he was the backup to Russell Wilson but started the final two games after he was benched. While he may have aspired to be a full-time starting quarterback in the NFL, Stidham has built a solid career as a backup quarterback. A reliable one too. Associated Press PLUMELEC, France (AP) — Cycling great Marianne Vos won the opening stage of the women's Tour de France with a brilliant late attack on Saturday. The 38-year-old Dutchwoman overtook her Visma–Lease a Bike teammate Pauline Ferrand-Prévot approaching the line, and then held off Mauritian rider Kim Le Court in the closing meters of a grueling uphill finish. Ferrand-Prévot looked set to win the stage, but the Frenchwoman attacked too early from 600 meters and could not withstand the late surge from Vos, who punched the air with her left fist as she crossed the line. Moments later, Vos hugged an exhausted-looking Ferrand-Prévot, the Paris-Roubaix winner. 'I didn't now if Pauline was still hanging in the finish, but in the end I sprinted a bit with Kim,' Vos said, praising her teammate's effort. 'I'm really grateful to the team and to Pauline.' The hilly 78.8-kilometer (48.9-mile) route from Vannes to Plumelec in Brittany featured two small climbs and was completed in 1 hour, 53 minutes, 3 seconds by Vos — a multiple world champion, a former Olympic road race champion and a silver medalist at last year's Paris Games. Former Olympic time-trial silver medalist Marlen Reusser was one of 10 riders to crash some 30 kilometers from the end. She continued for a while but was clearly struggling and had to abandon the stage. Sunday's second stage from the port city of Brest to Quimper stays in Brittany and is slightly more hilly and longer at 110.4 kilometers. The nine-stage race, which ends Aug. 3, began a day before the end of the men's Tour, set to be won for a fourth time by Slovenian star Tadej Pogačar by a comfortable margin. The women's race could be far closer. Padraig Harrington leads Justin Leonard by 2 shots at Senior British Open
Associated Press BERKSHIRE, England (AP) — Padraig Harrington birdied the final hole Saturday for another 5-under 65 for a two-shot lead over Justin Leonard going into the final round of the Senior British Open as the Irishman goes for his second senior major of the year. Harrington was among four players who had at least a share of the lead at some point during the round on the Old Course at Sunningdale. He seized the lead with birdies on the 13th and 14th hole, and a closing birdie added to his slight lead. Harrington was at 13-under 197. He has been in the United Kingdom the last three weeks for links golf, starting with the Scottish Open. He won the U.S. Senior Open in Colorado a month ago. Leonard, the only PGA Tour Champions player to make the cut last week in the British Open at Royal Portrush, also had a second straight 65. Thomas Bjorn had a 67 and was three shots behind. Harrington and Leonard are past British Open champions — Leonard at Royal Troon in 1997, Harrington winning the first of two claret jugs a decade later at Carnoustie (2007) and Royal Birkdale (2008). Either one can become the fifth player to win the British Open and Senior British Open, a feat last accomplished by Darren Clarke in 2022. Steven Alker, a two-time Charles Schwab Cup winner who opened with a 73, tried to get back in the game. He shot 66 and was among four players at 8-under 202, five shots behind.
