Pakistan coach Mike Hesson breaks silence on reports of asking Babar Azam to keep wickets for T20I comeback
New Delhi: Babar Azam remains unselected in Pakistan T20I team, and the right-handed batter will also miss the series against Bangladesh. Since he was dropped, it was reported that white-ball coach Mike Hesson has suggested to the ex-Pakistan captain the possibility of resuming wicket keeping duties as a means of getting his place back in the T20I team.
But Mike Hesson has already silenced all rumours and clarified that he did not recommend Babar Azam to become a wicketkeeper. These reports sparked off criticism among various former cricketers with Rashid Latif, Basit Ali, Moin Khan and Sikander Bakht openly criticizing the reported proposal.
Hesson gave a categorical answer and strongly maintained that he did not have such a dialogue with the 30-year-old. He also explained that should Babar Azam be called back into the T20I environment, he would re-enter the side as a top-order batsman the right-hander, in particular as an opener.
'No discussion took place with Babar where I suggested he also keep wickets. He has never kept wickets in his entire career, and you suggest he keep wickets. This is not the way to treat a former captain and senior,' Hesson told reporters.
Rumours circulating that Pakistan cricket head coach Mike Hesson had told players they could be dropped because they had a strike rate below 150 were denied by him also. He made it clear that nothing of this sort has been discussed with the team.
'I have also not told the players that if they want to keep their places in the team, they have to bat at strike rates of over 150. We are working on some things in this direction,' Hesson said.
Mike Hesson said that he is also working closely with the selection committee on finding players who can play several match roles in the T20I set-up.
'We are looking at players who are ready to float in the batting order and perform multiple roles, but that does not mean there will be no spot for specialist players,' Hesson said.
The T20I series will begin on July 20. All the games are scheduled to take place at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
Pakistan squad: Salman Ali Agha (Captain), Abrar Ahmed, Ahmed Daniyal, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Hassan Nawaz, Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Haris, Mohammad Nawaz, Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Salman Mirza, Sufyan Moqim.

Not Shubman Gill, India Star Backed To Come Out Of Virat Kohli's Shadow: "Time To..."
Former England cricketer Owais Shah feels KL Rahul will emerge as India's batter ahead of Shubman Gill following the Test retirement of Virat Kohli. Rahul has scored 375 runs in three Tests so far against England, smashing two centuries in the process. Speaking on ' Beard Before Wicket ' podcast, Shah suggested that Rahul will now come out of Kohli's shadow and shine in the current Indian Test setup. Shah also backed Rahul to outperform India captain Gill and become India's most important batter for the next 12 months or so. "I think he's been in the shadow of Kohli. With Kohli at the crease, he was always going to be your main batsman and Rahul was under the radar. But this is his time to flourish. This is the first series without Virat Kohli. Look at the batting order, yes Shubman Gill has done really well, I wasn't expecting it. I did not think he had it in him to do what he's done so far," said Shah. The Pakistan-born former batter also praised Rahul for showing great temperament and technique in the ongoing England tour so far "But I still feel KL Rahul is the best batsman in the batting line-up who you should be able to rely on. And it is time for him to deliver the sort of numbers his technique and temperament promise. I feel KL, over 10-15 matches, may just outscore Shubman Gill. I think we will see him really come about in the next 12 months," he added. Following Rahul's exploits in the first innings of the Lord's Test, former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar said that his form has been the biggest takeaway from the tour. "The biggest satisfaction I've had - as an analyst and a former cricketer - has come from watching KL Rahul. He has always had the game. Yes, there were grey areas in his technique, but he worked on those and resolved them. What was missing was consistency. On one of our shows, we even jokingly gave him the title of 'Mr. Consistent KL Rahul' - but it's taken him a long time to truly earn that tag. "He has now played over 50 Test matches for India, and what I'm seeing now is close to perfection - there are no visible weaknesses. For the first time in an overseas series, he has scored more than 200 runs. That, for me, is a massive takeaway for India," Manjrekar said on JioHotstar.

‘We have to see how bad the cut is': India pacer injured ahead of Manchester Test, may need stitches
India suffered an injury scare ahead of the Manchester Test as star pacer cut his hand during practice and may need stitches. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate provided an update on the situation after the practice session on Thursday. read more Team India have been dealt another injury scare ahead of the crucial fourth Test against England in Manchester, starting July 23. India trail the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 1-2 after a heartbreaking 22-run loss at Lord's and must win the next game to stay alive in the series. Arshdeep Singh suffers injury Young left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh suffered a hand injury during net practice on Thursday, July 17. The uncapped Test bowler was reportedly in strong contention to make his debut in Manchester. According to assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, Arshdeep was hit by the ball during practice and cut his hand. 'He took a ball while he was bowling there. So he hit a ball, and he tried to stop it and it's just a cut. So we have to see how bad the cut is. Obviously, the medical team have taken him off to see a doctor and obviously, if he needs stitches or does he not, that will be important to our planning for the next few days,' Doeschate said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Also Read: 'Always moaning': Ex-England captain takes cheeky dig at bowlers amid ongoing Dukes ball controversy The incident prompted bowling coach Morne Morkel to roll his arm over in the nets. Though far from generating the express pace of Jofra Archer, Morkel provided good practice to the batters. 'It's not a sort of direct practice machine for Jofra (laughs), but obviously Arsh going away there after he cut his hand and Akash not bowling today. 'Sometimes we run a bit thin and if we think the practice is good, someone rolling off 20 yards and a bit taller and shaping the new ball, it is good practice for the batters. They obviously like competing against Morne as well. But it's mainly about getting the batters the best practice for the Test match,' said Doeschate. Also Read: Keeping up with the light hearted mood of the session, Morkel went back to the dressing room claiming a five-wicket haul against his batters. Jasprit Bumrah, on the other hand, did not have a bowl and neither did Mohammed Siraj as part of workload management. It remains to be seen if either of them is rested in the next Test with the series on the line. (With agency inputs)
