Social Security change coming in August: SSA to roll out new policy. What to know

Hindustan Times4 days ago
The Social Security Administration (SSA) will introduce a new multi-factor authorization policy starting mid-August. The agency plans to roll out a new Security Authentication Pin (SAP) to protect beneficiaries' personal accounts. Initially, the move drew sharp criticism from advocates who suggested that the in-person visits required to facilitate such a shift would put people with disabilities, senior citizens, and rural communities at risk of being left out. However, the SSA has provided clarification in this regard. Social Security Administration is rolling out a major change in August: Here's all you need to know about it(REUTERS)
SSA clarifies the need for in-person visits
In response to concerns, the agency confirmed that in-office visits would not be mandatory for those willing to opt into the SSA's latest security provision. 'The filing with OMB will be amended to clarify that the use of the Security Authentication PIN (SAP) feature is entirely optional,' a spokesperson for the agency told Newsweek on Thursday (July 31).
'We are encouraging my Social Security account holders to use the enhanced SAP feature to quickly and securely verify their identity when calling the National 800 Number. Beneficiaries and my Social Security account holders are not required to set up or have a SAP for identity verification or manage their benefits over the phone – when calling the National 800 Number, they will continue to use the existing identity verification process.'
Why the sudden change?
The SSA had initially planned on keeping the verification process open only for those willing to visit their nearest office, removing the option to do the same over a phone call. However, this would have added 3.4 million office visits to the SSA's schedule, per the outlet. Due to recent staffing cuts, 1 SSA employee is expected to serve 1,480 beneficiaries, as per AFGE's estimates, which implies that this policy would have overburdened the workforce as well. Now, the option to verify the same over the call is also available.
In terms of changes, the agency has now started withholding up to 50% of benefits in case of overpayments. Improper payments usually occur due to miscalculation, failure to update status, or false income reporting. A beneficiary can ask for a waiver if they are facing financial troubles or are granted the option to appeal and request smaller withholdings. Beneficiaries must keep checking their notices and emails to be updated in case they are included in these categories.

Tesla shareholders sue company and CEO Elon Musk over Robotaxi claims

Representative image Elon Musk and Tesla are facing a lawsuit from the shareholders of the electric vehicle-making company. In the lawsuit, shareholders accused the EV maker and its CEO of securities fraud, alleging that the company concealed significant safety risks associated with its self-driving vehicles, including the Robotaxi . According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the proposed class action lawsuit was filed in the federal court of Austin, Texas. It follows Tesla's first public test of its robotaxis in late June, which reportedly showed the vehicles speeding, braking abruptly, driving over curbs, entering incorrect lanes, and dropping off passengers in the middle of multi-lane roads. What Tesla shareholders said about the company's Robotaxi service As per the Reuters report, Tesla shareholders have alleged that the company exaggerated the capabilities of its autonomous driving technology, thereby overstating its business outlook and inflating its stock value. However, the company's stock declined by 6.1% across two consecutive trading sessions following the start of the test. The lawsuit aims to recover unspecified damages for investors who held shares between April 19, 2023, and June 22, 2025, Reuters added. The lawsuit comes after Musk teased the launch of Tesla's robotaxi service in San Francisco last week. The service's expected expansion will follow a limited pilot in Austin, Texas, where a small fleet of vehicles started operating within a geofenced area. In San Francisco, the initial operational zone is expected to cover the broader Bay Area. Select Tesla owners have received early invitations, and the launch has reportedly also been moved up. Expansion plans for this service even include states like Nevada, Arizona, and Florida, but broader deployment depends on obtaining regulatory approvals. In California, Tesla has yet to complete the permit process required for full driverless services, with state agencies emphasising safety evaluations. The service is said to be introduced on an invite-only basis that will allow Tesla to manage safety, collect data, and meet compliance standards. This phased approach reflects the company's cautious strategy amid regulatory and technical challenges. iOS 26 Public Beta Is Here: Apple's Biggest Redesign Since iOS 7 AI Masterclass for Students. 'Crushing Family Budgets': Trump's Tariffs Push Everyday Costs Higher For Americans

Last Updated: NY Governor Kathy Hochul further said Trump's tariffs were nothing but a disguised tax that was burdening hardworking families and filling the pockets of billionaires. US lawmakers hit out at US President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs on dozens of economies, including allies and rivals, as domestic businesses say the swarm of new import taxes is driving up costs and making business planning more difficult. Sharing a video on X, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said, 'Trump's tariffs are jacking up prices and crushing family budgets. In New York, we're putting money back where it belongs: your pocket." 'How do you spell tariff. TAX. It's nothing other than a disguised tax. And who do we do that with? One of our greatest allies, people that we know as our friends and neighbours. The cost of everything is going to go up – everything. And all the hard-earned work you do to bring home that paycheck, less and less to buy the groceries you need." Trump's tariffs are jacking up prices and crushing family New York, we're putting money back where it belongs: your pocket. — Governor Kathy Hochul (@GovKathyHochul) August 5, 2025 Hochul further said Trump's tariffs were more concerned about 'lining the pockets of billionaires." She said her team has worked hard to put $5,000 back into the pockets of hardworking families to show that 'we are ready to fight back." The tariffs have impacted the domestic services sector, which accounts for two-thirds of total US economic activity. Business activity unexpectedly flatlined in July with little change in orders and a further weakening in employment, according to Reuters, although input costs rose the most in nearly three years. Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna pointed out on X, 'Americans are most stressed about grocery prices. Yet tomatoes at Mario's grocery store in Vegas have gone up from $1.19 a pound to $1.99 because of our tariffs on tomatoes from Mexico!" Americans are most stressed about grocery prices. Yet tomatoes at Mario's grocery store in Vegas have gone up from $1.19 a pound to $1.99 because of our tariffs on tomatoes from Mexico. RT if you think we should repeal those tomato tariffs! — Ro Khanna (@RoKhanna) August 5, 2025 'Trump's tariffs are hiking your prices at the grocery store so he can pay for his tax cuts for billionaires. That's exactly what Trump wants, and it's despicable. He's hurting you to help his billionaire buddies," wrote Chuck Schumer, Senate Democratic leader on Monday. Trump's Tariffs On India Meanwhile, Trump on Tuesday threatened the increase the 25% tariffs on India 'very substantially" over the next 24 hours, in view of New Delhi's continued purchases of Russian oil. He also said a 'zero tariff" offer for imports of US goods into India was not good enough, alleging that India was 'fuelling the war" in Ukraine. 'They're fuelling the war machine, and if they're going to do that, then I'm not going to be happy," he told CNBC. Trump's latest comment followed a similar threat on Monday, which prompted India's Foreign Ministry to say the country was being unfairly singled out over its purchases of Russian oil. Trump's ally and former presidential rival, Nikki Haley, cautioned India against Russian oil purchase, but also highlighted China for doing the same. In the most pointed Republican criticism yet of Donald Trump's escalating trade stance toward New Delhi, Haley said, 'India should not be buying oil from Russia. But China, an adversary and the number one buyer of Russian and Iranian oil, got a 90-day tariff pause." Nikki Haley, who has long positioned herself as both hawkish on Beijing and a proponent of India's strategic rise, added, 'Don't give China a pass and burn a relationship with a strong ally like India." view comments Location : New York, United States of America (USA) First Published: August 05, 2025, 23:50 IST News world 'Crushing Family Budgets': Trump's Tariffs Push Everyday Costs Higher For Americans Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Nayara Energy trade: Russia-backed refinery exports first gasoline shipment after EU sanctions; diesel shipment to follow

Amid tightening international scrutiny, Russian-linked Indian refiner Nayara Energy has exported its first gasoline shipment since the European Union imposed sanctions on the company on July 18, Reuters reported citing four sources and LSEG data. According to shipping sources and LSEG data, the vessel Tempest Dream departed on Monday with around 43,000 metric tons (over 363,000 barrels) of gasoline and is en route to Sohar in Oman. The tanker itself had been sanctioned earlier by the UK in June. The identity of the buyer remains unconfirmed. A second EU-sanctioned vessel, Sard, is currently docked at Nayara's Vadinar port in western India and is expected to lift a similar quantity of diesel, sources said. The shipments come amid operational challenges at Nayara's 400,000-barrel-per-day refinery, which has scaled back crude processing after difficulties in sourcing ships and marketing fuel from the sanctioned port, Reuters reported earlier. To counter export constraints, Nayara — which operates over 6,600 fuel outlets across India — has turned to domestic sales through state-owned fuel retailers, industry officials said. In a recent move, the company used the vessel Leruo to transfer 43,000 tons of diesel to Mundra port, according to trade sources and ship-tracking firm Kpler. Both Leruo and Sard are among the vessels blacklisted by the EU in recent months. Nayara Energy is backed by Russia's Rosneft and a consortium of global investors.
