Court denies pre-arrest bail to Jordan visa fraud accused
Biju Jalas, 44, of Thumba, was accused of defrauding lakhs of rupees from several people by promising them Israeli work visas. However, they were taken to Jordan and directed to sneak through the border to Israel without valid visas.
The fraud came to light after Thumba native Thomas Gabriel Pereira, 47, was shot dead by Jordanian soldiers in Feb 2025, while attempting to sneak into Israel. His brother-in-law Edison, 44, was also injured in the leg in the firing.
Another couple, John Mary, 48, and her husband Romance, 52, were also taken to Jordan on Jan 7, 2024, with the promise of Israeli work visas with an attractive salary. However, they were also taken to Jordan and Romance died of a cardiac arrest there.
In a similar way, the accused had cheated several people.
"Since the crime took place in Jordan, a detailed probe has to be conducted by a suitable agency and the accused claimed that the victims were taken to Jordan after being convinced of the risks involved.

We received direction from the top level not to arrest the accused now. A request was given to the city police commissioner to hand over the probe to a suitable agency. Meanwhile, we were also directed to collect maximum evidence and submit a preliminary investigation report.
Based on the report, higher-ups will take a decision to hand over the probe," police said.
In the meantime, the victims alleged that the probe team was working hand in glove with the accused. "The probe into the case is not effective, as police freed the accused despite knowing that he committed a grave crime. We need justice, as this is not just an issue for me and Thomas, but there are many others who Jalas cheated in the same manner. In Thumba alone, more than 10 people lost their money in the fraud and they are willing to move legally.
The larger network behind the fraud must be exposed," said Edison.

‘Prefer death over humiliation': Delhi cop accuses judge of court insults, unethical treatment; diary entries cite ‘mutton handi', gym fee demands
Representative Image (AI) NEW DELHI: A Delhi Police inspector has kicked up a furore by officially recording instances of alleged misbehaviour and unethical demands by a Delhi judge. After a hearing where he was allegedly humiliated, the officer called his seniors and said he would "prefer to die than be in a job where he has to face such humiliation. In the diary entry, the inspector detailed his allegations about unreasonable demands and threats of passing adverse orders against the officer. The inspector added that he had previously reported similar issues with the judge. The incident comes on the heels of two recent cases involving a court officer and a staffer. In early July, a head constable made a diary entry about receiving a call from a court 'ahlmad' (bookkeeper) demanding 'mutton handi'. The cop was threatened that he would be dealt with in court when he said he could, at most, request a discount. In June, the anti-corruption branch also registered an FIR against an ahlmad on bribery charges. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Providers are furious: Internet access without a subscription! The inspector claimed he was asked by the judge to stand at the back facing the wall like a suspected criminal. The cop alleged that the judge's behaviour towards him and his staff had been problematic for some time, particularly so after the judge's marriage in December last year, even though police personnel were sent to the marriage venue in Kota, Rajasthan, without senior officers' permission. The complaint alleges that a head constable, posted at Sarita Vihar police station, who still handles work related to the Nizamuddin area, was asked to arrange favours for the judge. These include procuring sports equipment (bat and gloves) worth around Rs 18,000-20,000 from Meerut, for which the inspector allegedly paid Rs 21,000. "The staff also pays around Rs 3,000 per month for flowers and arranging an annual subscription to a gym," he stated.

Brazil's Lula calls Trump's tariff threat 'unacceptable blackmail'
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Thursday slammed Donald Trump 's threat to impose 50 percent tariffs on Latin America's largest economy as "unacceptable blackmail." Lula's comments during a nationally televised speech were the latest in series of tense exchanges between the leaders, with the US president launching especially blistering attacks on the government in Brasilia. The tariffs on all products from Brazil would kick in on August 1 if Brasilia and Washington do not reach an agreement. Live Events In his speech, leftist leader Lula slammed Brazilian politicians who back Trump's policies as "traitors to the homeland." He said he would continue "betting on good commercial and diplomatic relations" but warned: "Brazil has only one owner: the Brazilian people." Bolsonaro is facing trial over accusations he plotted a coup after his narrow 2022 election loss to Lula. If found guilty, he could face up to 40 years in prison. Earlier on Thursday, Trump posted a letter addressed to Bolsonaro on his Truth Social platform in which he insisted Lula's government "changes course" and "stop attacking" his political ally. "I have seen the terrible treatment you are receiving at the hands of an unjust system turned against you," Trump wrote to Bolsonaro. "I have strongly voiced my disapproval both publicly and through our Tariff policy," he added. Trump also said he was "concerned about the attacks on free speech" in Brazil and in the United States. He appeared to be alluding to the suspension in Brazil of Rumble, a video-sharing platform popular among conservative groups, over its refusal to block a user accused of spreading disinformation. 'Interference' Trump's intervention in the Bolsonaro case has improved Lula's popularity, who has appealed for national unity in the face of US "interference." Unlike the tariffs Trump is slapping on economies around the world, including top US allies, the measures against Brazil were announced in openly political terms. Brazil had not been among dozens of trade partners previously threatened with duties above a 10 percent baseline. The United States runs a goods trade surplus with Brazil, which said it had repeatedly requested that Washington point out areas of particular concern. Brazil expressed "indignation" at the stiff proposed tariff in a letter addressed to US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
